President Trump Imposes New Tariff on Canada, Mexico and China

President Trump
President Trump
President Donald Trump announced the implementation of the long-threatened 25% US tariff against Canada and Mexico, today. According to the US president, import taxes will force the US neighbouring states to take more actions to curb illegal drugs and migrants entering the country.

World Eyes Effects

As a reaction to Trump’s introduction of new tariffs on America’s two biggest trading partners, markets across the globe dropped. A 10% tariff will be imposed on Chinese goods also. This comes after Beijing did not live up to Trump’s expectation of doing enough to stop the flow of fentanyl into the US. This will come along with the tariff imposed on Chinese goods last month, which brings the levies on imports from China to 20%.
All three countries, Canada, Mexico, and China, have officially said that they will retaliate against the US in response to the status. This will be done by raising the prospects of a wider trade war.
Now the experts have warned that American consumers are likely to face higher costs for certain products because of increasing tariffs on imported goods, which require cheaper production costs.

Ganga Water in Bihar ‘Unfit for Bathing’ reveals state Economic Survey

After the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) found the presence of faecal coliform bacteria in the river water along various locations in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj during the recent Maha Kumbh 2025, Ganga water has been found unfit for bathing at several places in Bihar. This is mainly due to the presence of a high value of “bacteriological population”, according to Bihar Economic Survey 2024-25.
Important towns located on the banks of the river include Buxar, Chapra (Saran), Dighwara, Sonepur, Maner, Danapur, Patna, Fatuha, Bakhtiyarpur, Barh, Mokama, Begusarai, Khagaria, Lakhisarai, Manihari, Munger, Jamalpur, Sultanganj, Bhagalpur and Kahalgaon.

Ganga Water Quality in Bihar

As per the Bihar Economic Survey report, “The water quality of Ganga indicates the presence of a higher value of bacteriological population (total coliform and faecal coliform). This is mainly due to the discharge of sewage/domestic waste water from cities located on the banks of Ganga and her tributaries. The other parameters… pH (acidity or basicity), dissolved oxygen and bio-chemical oxygen demand (BOD) have been observed within the prescribed limit in the river and her tributaries in Bihar, indicating that water is fit for aquatic life, wildlife propagation, fisheries and irrigation.”
Reacting to the report, Bihar State Pollution Control Board Chairperson (BSPCB) DK Shukla told PTI that the presence of a higher value of bacteriological population in the Ganga river is a matter of concern. He said, “Faecal coliform bacteria are found in excreta that contaminates water through untreated sewage. The higher the level, the higher is the presence of disease-causing pathogens in water. According to the CPCB standards, the permissible limit of faecal coliform is 2,500 MPN/100 ml.”
At most places, the presence of total coliform and faecal coliform in the Ganga is much higher, indicating it is not fit for bathing, he further said assuring that the BSPCB is taking measures to ensure that sewage treatment plants (STP) in the state function properly.

Ganga Water Quality in Prayagraj

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) released a report on February 17 stating that water near multiple Maha Kumbh locations at Prayagraj have shown high levels of faecal coliform bacteria. The report created a nationwide panic with millions taking a dip at the Sangam. However Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath dismissed the claims saying that the water of the said location was “fit for drinking”.
As per a report submitted to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), faecal coliform levels at all monitored locations were above the permissible limit of 2,500 units per 100 ml, which point out that there is significant sewage contamination. This is alarming because Kumbh is known for witnessing the world’s largest human gathering where millions of devotees take ritual baths at the Sangam. The crowd is more especially on auspicious days, which leads to increased bacterial concentrations in the water.

The incident occurred during its climax scene. The video which has since gone viral on social media shows the five men forced to kneel near the cinema screen. They were made to publicly express remorse for laughing and joking during the film’s climactic depiction of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj’s horrifying torture by the mughals.

Video Goes Viral

One of the men is seen in the video initially apologizing to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Marathi, saying, “mi Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj chi maafi maagto” ( I apologise to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj ). However, he was quickly corrected by those present, who insisted he apologise to Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. He then switched to Hindi, stating, “Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj ki picture chal rahi thi ussme humne hassi-majak kiya uske liye maafi maangta hu”.

Situation Escalates

Meanwhile the situation escalated as members of the audience lectured the men about the significance of the film and the historical figure it portrayed. One individual was heard saying, “ye toh humari karmabhoomi hai, kaise bhulenge,” emphasizing the importance of respecting the historical context, particularly in their “work land” of Mumbai. After the apology, the men were instructed to leave the theatre.
However the incident has sparked wide discussions on social media regarding respect for historical figures and the appropriate behavior at public spaces, particularly during sensitive events. As of now, there is no official confirmation of any formal police complaint or FIR being filed in connection with this incident.

Maharashtra State Minister Dhananjay Munde submitted his resignation on Tuesday following public criticism regarding the fatal killing of Beed district’s sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh. The arrest of Walmik Karad who served as Munde’s close aide prompted the resignation following the murder in December 2024. Murder of Congress Worker Himani Narwal: CCTV Footage and Arrest of Prime Suspect

CCTV footage has surfaced showing Sachin, the prime suspect in the murder of Congress worker Himani Narwal, dragging a suitcase containing her body. The footage, captured on the night of February 28, shows Sachin dragging the suitcase down a deserted street near Himani’s residence in Rohtak. The suitcase was later discovered near the Sampla bus stand, where authorities found Narwal’s lifeless body inside.
On Monday, the Haryana Police confirmed that Sachin, a resident of Jhajjar, a mobile shop owner, had been arrested after confessing to the crime. According to police reports, Sachin and Himani, 22, became acquainted through social media over a year ago. They had been friends, but their relationship reportedly soured due to financial disputes. Police said that on February 27, Sachin visited Himani’s home in Vijay Nagar, Rohtak, where an argument ensued the following day. This argument escalated, and in a fit of rage, Sachin strangled Himani with the cable of a mobile phone charger.

How the Murder Took Place

After killing her, Sachin allegedly stuffed her body into a suitcase, along with a quilt stained with blood, and discarded it near the bus stand. Before abandoning the body, he took her belongings, including jewellery, her phone, and a laptop, which he later hid at his shop in Jhajjar. The police also revealed that there was no political connection between the two, contrary to some rumors suggesting otherwise. The investigation is still ongoing, with authorities looking into potential financial motives, though the details of the dispute between them remain unclear.
The police also noted that they discovered bite marks and scratches on Sachin’s hands, which he claimed were a result of Himani trying to defend herself. These marks are now a key part of the investigation. The accused’s actions after the murder, including the theft of Himani’s items, have raised further questions about the nature of their relationship.

Himani’s Family Seek Justice

Following the arrest, Himani’s family has called for justice, with her brother demanding the death penalty for the accused. Her mother, Savita, has publicly accused political figures within the Congress party of being involved in her daughter’s death, claiming that her rising political profile and proximity to senior leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, may have made her a target.
In response to the murder, the BJP has questioned the Congress party’s handling of the situation and demanded an investigation into the claims made by Himani’s family. The Congress, on the other hand, has criticised the Haryana government for its handling of law and order in the state, demanding a thorough investigation into the crime.
Authorities have assured the public that all aspects of the case, including financial and personal motives, will be thoroughly examined as they work towards ensuring justice for Himani Narwal.

“I fell into their trap very badly, and now my life has been ruined. What is the point of living now? …She has brought it to such a point that it is over. Consider this my dying testament: she uses people, makes them bear expenses, and takes advantage of them,” Singh said in the video.

Family Files Police Complaint

Meanwhile the police complaint was lodged by Abhishek’s brother, who alleged that after learning the truth about the woman, Singh was devastated.
The Police released in a statement on Monday which says, “As per the complaint filed by his brother, Abhishek Singh was in a relationship with Monika Sihag. On March 1, at around 11.30 am, Abhishek informed his brother that Monika had refused to marry him, revealing that she was already married and had a child”.

Police Launches Investigation

Following this the Mangaluru South police registered a case against the woman. The police said that the woman officer serves as an assistant commandant in the CISF.
The Karnataka Police has initiated an investigation to probe into the matter. A case has been also registered against Monika for abetment of suicide under Section 108 of the newly implemented Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS 2023).
While the case of Abhishek Singh has brought attention to the issue of men facing harassment, it’s important to recognize that his story is not unique. Many men experience similar situations, but their voices often go unheard.

Protesters Attack Police Station in Bikaner Over Deer Hunting Incident

A shocking incident has unfolded in Rajasthan’s Bikaner district. A police station in Bikaner was recently attacked by protesters. The protest quickly turned violent as the demonstrators pelted stones at the Bajju Police Station. The protesters demanded the public parading of six men from Punjab, who were arrested for allegedly hunting deer.

Arrest After a 60-kilometer Chase, Video Viral

The six accused from Punjab were apprehended after a 60-kilometer chase. The police were able to arrest them, despite the suspects allegedly firing at the police officers while being restrained. A video of the incident, which has since gone viral on social media, shows the police officers engaging with the suspects during the shootout.
According to reports, protests over deer hunting led to the closure of local markets and traffic jams on state highways in Bikaner. The demonstrators also caused major damage to the Bajju Police Station board. Locals demanded strict action be taken against the accused hunters.

Demand For Strict Punishment

As the videos went viral, the incident sparked outrage, particularly from the Bishnoi community. The Bishnoi community is known for its deep reverence for nature and wildlife. Jaisukh Bishnoi, the Sarpanch of Mankasar, released a video statement in which he called for the accused to be charged with sedition and demanded the strictest punishment.
In the video, Jaisukh Bishnoi stated, “Some hunters shot dead a deer while they were travelling. We were informed about the incident. The police went after them and caught them after a chase of 60 kilometres. The hunters fired upon the police personnel when they were trying to restrain them. Despite that, the police did not give up and arrested them”.
Bishnoi further added, “These hunters entered a restricted area with weapons, and their actions must be punished severely. They should be charged with sedition. They are taking inspiration from Salman Khan, who killed blackbucks and was not punished by the court.”

Bikaner Police Response to the Protesters

The Bikaner Police has assured the local residents that action would be taken against the accused as per the law. The police further stated that investigations are ongoing, and the accused will face legal consequences.

The incident caused uproar among the Bishnoi community, who regard the blackbuck as sacred.

Protests at Kolkata’s Jadavpur University After Education Minister’s Visit, SFI demand’s Bratya Basu’s arrest

Protests at Kolkata’s Jadavpur University After Education Minister’s Visit, SFI demand’s Bratya Basu’s arrest
Jadavpur University (JU), one of the key educational institutions in West Bengal, experienced a surge of protests on Saturday, following the visit of State Education Minister Bratya Basu. The event descended into chaos, resulting in confrontations between students and police, and even injuries to the minister.
The protests were sparked during Basu’s attendance at the Annual General Meeting of the West Bengal College and University Professors Association (WBCUPA), where leftist student groups assembled to demand the immediate organisation of Student Union Elections in the state.
The CPI(M)-affiliated Students Federation of India (SFI) has demanded the arrest of Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu for allegedly injuring students inside the University campus in Kolkata on Saturday.

What happened at Jadavpur University (JU)?

The circumstances escalated when Basu was encircled by a large crowd of protesting students as he attempted to exit the campus. The students, mostly linked to the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), began chanting slogans against the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and calling for the reinstatement of democratic student body elections. As the situation intensified, a group of students reportedly surrounded the minister’s vehicle, creating a disturbance.
Amid the ensuing turmoil, the windscreen of Basu’s car was damaged, and he sustained injuries while seated inside. He was swiftly taken to a hospital for treatment and later discharged. In remarks to the media, Basu condemned the incident and expressed his readiness to engage in discussions with the protesting students. “I was willing to speak with them. The SFI had given me their memorandum, and I had committed to discussing it with five representatives in the presence of the Vice Chancellor. Yet, it appeared they were not open to a productive conversation,” Basu stated.
In contrast, the protesting students, including those from the SFI, provided a different narrative. They alleged that the Minister’s car tried to force its way through the crowd, injuring a first-year student who needed hospitalization. SFI leader Kaushiki Bhattacharya asserted, “We did not initiate violence. It was the TMCP (Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad) members who entered the campus and provoked the conflict.”

One person arrested

The unrest persisted even after Basu’s departure from the campus. In an unexpected development, the office of the Left-leaning teachers’ association, a vocal critic of the state government, was set ablaze shortly after the minister left. The police have filed seven FIRs, including two suo-motu cases, on various charges such as assault, damaging public property, and snatching.
Currently, one individual has been arrested in connection with the arson. The suspect, Mohammad Sahil Ali, 25, resides in Mohammad Bazar in Birbhum and is currently renting an apartment in Bijoygarh, Kolkata. Ali has been placed in police custody until March 12.

SFI calls for students’ strike

In response to the violence and police actions, the SFI has called for a statewide students’ strike. This strike is intended to protest the attacks on students and what they label as “unprovoked violence” by pro-TMC groups. Meanwhile, Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma held a press briefing, announcing that with the Higher Secondary Examinations (Class 12 board exams) scheduled to start on Monday, the police would not permit any protests or strikes that could disrupt the exam process.
In a subsequent audio message, the SFI clarified that while they would maintain their protests on the university grounds, they would ensure that there would be no disruptions around exam venues. The group emphasized that their protests were not intended to interfere with the exam schedule but were focused solely on expressing their discontent with the government’s position on student union elections.

Incident ignites political debate

This incident has ignited significant political debate, with opposition parties accusing the state government of fostering a climate of fear and suppression on college campuses. University officials have also appealed for calm, warning that ongoing violence could damage the institution’s reputation and jeopardize student safety.
As tensions continue to simmer at Jadavpur University, both students and political leaders are closely monitoring the situation for further developments in the days ahead. With police investigations underway and student unions determined to persist with their protests, the climate remains unstable, and the calls for democratic reforms in student politics show no signs of subsiding.
