Mumbai Heightens Security After Social Media Warning of Possible Riots During Eid

In response to a social media post warning of potential riots, bombings, and arson during Eid celebrations on March 31 and April 1, 2025, security across Mumbai has been ramped up. The warning, which cited “illegal Rohingya/Bangladeshi/Pakistani infiltrators” as the perpetrators of the alleged attacks, was sent to the Navi Mumbai police and later shared with the Mumbai police.

High Security Alert in the Area

The warning suggested that areas like Dongri, known for their communal sensitivity, could be targeted. Upon receiving this alert from Navi Mumbai police, the Mumbai police immediately escalated their security measures. Increased patrolling and vigilance were implemented across the city, with Mumbai’s Crime Branch, Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), and Special Branch involved in heightened surveillance. As of now, no suspicious activity has been reported, but authorities remain on high alert.
The social media post further fueled concerns by suggesting that the attacks would be orchestrated by individuals with connections to neighboring countries. However, the authorities have not confirmed any concrete evidence of this, and the situation remains under investigation.

New Guidelines Introduced for Media Coverage

In an effort to control misinformation, the Maharashtra government has introduced new guidelines to regulate media coverage. These guidelines aim to swiftly address any misleading or false reports that could contribute to unrest. The Directorate General of Information and Public Relations (DGIPR) will monitor print, electronic, and digital platforms, ensuring that corrective measures are taken when necessary.
In a separate development, a Bangladeshi national, Azizul Nizanul Rahman, was arrested in Mumbai for illegally residing in India. Rahman is also under investigation for possible links to the violence that occurred in Nagpur on March 17, 2025. The Crime Branch suspects that Rahman was involved in the unrest following rumors surrounding a religiously sensitive incident. His mobile records are being analysed to confirm his whereabouts during the violence.
As the situation develops, Mumbai’s law enforcement remains vigilant, focusing on maintaining order during Eid celebrations and responding to potential threats swiftly.

Three cases filed against Kunal Kamra in Mumbai a day after Madras HC granted him anticipatory bail

Just a day after the Madras High Court granted interim anticipatory bail to comedian Kunal Kamra, who has stirred a controversy with his jibe at Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, three cases were filed against the stand-up comedian at Mumbai’s Khar Police Station. The three complainants are the Mayor of Jalgaon city, a hotelier and a businessman from Nashik as revealed by Mumbai Police to news agency ANI.
On Friday, the Madras High Court granted Kamra relief on the condition that he should execute a bond to the satisfaction of the judicial magistrate at Vanur in Villupuram district in Tamil Nadu. Justice Sunder Mohan also issued notice to 2nd Respondent (Khar Police) and posted the matter to April 7.
Meanwhile, Khar Police has issued summons to the 36-year-old comedian twice asking him to appear before them in Mumbai for questioning but he has not turned up yet. A Zero FIR was lodged against Kamra under Sections 353(1)(b), 353(2) [Public mischief] and 356(2) [Defamation] BNS by Shiv Sena MLA Muraji Patel. The FIR was later transferred to Khar police station in Mumbai.
In the second summons issued earlier this week, Kamra has been asked to appear before the Khar Police on March 31, following which he submitted petition seeking anticipatory bail in Madras High Court fearing arrest by Mumbai Police. Kamra is a resident of Villupuram town in Tamil Nadu which comes under the jurisdiction of Madras High Court and hence he had filed the petition there.

Kamra’s “gaddar” jibe at Eknath Shinde

Kamra, known for his satirical style of comedy, was performing at a stand-up show at the Unicontinental Hotel in Mumbai’s Khar area, where he mocked Shinde’s defection from the Shiv Sena and his alliance with the BJP by allegedly calling him a “gaddar” (traitor) in an indirect manner. The jokes, which included a parody of a song from the Bollywood movie “Dil To Pagal Hai”, were aimed at Shinde, even though Kamra did not mention him by name. His performance quickly gained attention on social media, following which it triggered a series of protests and even violence.

Kunal Kamra refuses to apologise

Refusing to apologise for his act, the comedian recently issued a statement on social media where he wrote, “I will not apologise. What I said is exactly what Mr. Ajit Pawar (1st Deputy CM) said about Mr. Eknath Shinde (2nd Deputy CM). I don’t fear this mob and I will not be hiding under my bed, waiting for this to die down.”
Highlighting the importance of freedom of speech in India, Kunal Kamra further mentioned in his statement, “Our right to freedom of speech and expression is not only to be used to fawn over the powerful and rich even though today’s media would have us believe otherwise. Your inability to take a joke at the expense of a powerful public figure does not change the nature of my right. As far as I know, it is not against the law to poke fun at our leaders and the circus that is our political system.”

Uttar Pradesh:

Navratri NonVeg Ban Varanasi
Navratri NonVeg Ban Varanasi

Navratri

Noida Man Loses Rs 6.5 Crore in Online Investment Scam Linked to Dating App

Businesswoman Using Smart phone
A Noida-based director from a Delhi firm named Daljit Singh lost his lifetime savings worth Rs 6.5 crore through an online investment scam. Through his connection on the dating app with Anita, he became vulnerable to losing his entire savings, amounting to Rs 6.5 crore, in online trading platforms that allegedly produced false promises of substantial returns.

How the Incident Took Place

At 50 years old, Singh joined the dating application as a way to search for love. The meeting occurred between Singh and Anita in December 2024, and she said she lived in Hyderabad. Their talks shifted from simple small talk to more serious mature discussions. After winning his trust Anita proposed that he place funds in a few selected online trading platforms which would provide him substantial gains.
Although doubtful in the beginning, Singh made his first investment of Rs 3.2 lakh. He received Rs 24,000 back from his small initial investment the same day, which prompted him to realize that his trading choice was practical. After his initial gain, he put all his savings of Rs 4.5 crore into these recommended companies. Using a Rs 2 crore loan, Singh added the funds to his existing investments, which resulted in a total value of Rs 6.5 crore.

Singh Filed a Police Complaint

However, when Singh tried to withdraw his money, he was informed that he needed to pay a 30% fee as a processing charge. Suspicious, Singh refused, only to find that Anita had cut off all contact with him, and two of the websites she recommended were now offline. Realising he had been duped, Singh filed a complaint with the Cyber Police in Noida Sector-36.
Upon investigation, police discovered that Anita’s profile on the dating app was entirely fake. Authorities are now working to trace the accounts where Singh’s money was transferred. The case has drawn attention to the growing issue of online fraud, particularly those targeting individuals seeking companionship.
Singh’s story is a stark reminder to exercise caution when engaging in online interactions, especially when financial investments are involved. As the investigation continues, police are urging the public to be vigilant about such scams.

Top CSR projects in Shillong

Shillong is the capital city of Meghalaya. It has an old-world charm that has led to the city being bestowed with the title: The Scotland of the East. Shillong used to be the capital of undivided Assam until the state of Meghalaya was formed in the year 1972. Shillong is a storehouse of natural resources and hence an ideal place to set up industries. The strategy is in line with the larger goal of “Panchamrit” announced by India’s Prime Minster Narendra Modi at CoP-26 to achieve Net Zero Emissions by 2070. SECL, the Miniratna PSU, is planning to develop the above projects at a cost of more than Rs.1000 crores.
Solar power projects of more than 180 MW are already in various phases of development in the operational areas of SECL spread over Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. The Indian coal major has recently commissioned rooftop solar projects of 580 kWp capacity in Johilla, Jamuna-Kotma and Kusmunda Areas. At Johilla Area, the commissioned capacity is about 280 kWp. CBI Rules Out Gangrape in RG Kar Incident, High Court Seeks Evidence

A significant divergence has surfaced in the judicial proceedings concerning the alleged sexual assault at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), in its submission to the Calcutta High Court, has challenged the initial assertion of a gang rape, presenting forensic evidence that points to a single perpetrator.
This revelation, based on meticulous DNA analysis conducted at the crime scene, indicates that the victim, while undeniably subjected to sexual assault, was attacked by one individual, contradicting previous reports.
Justice Tirthankar Ghosh, presiding over the case, has demanded a comprehensive account from the CBI, specifically requesting the detailed list of witnesses interrogated, their respective testimonies, and the original case dossier compiled by the Kolkata Police. The court’s directive, issued during a recent hearing, mandates the agency to furnish this information within the next two weeks.

Discrepancies and Judicial Scrutiny

The CBI, through its legal representative Rajdeep Majumdar, presented its findings in a sealed report to the court. This submission was in response to the court’s earlier queries regarding the nature of the assault—whether it was an act of gang rape or a single-perpetrator crime—the potential involvement of individuals beyond the convicted Sanjay Roy, and the rationale behind the ongoing inquiry.
The agency has reaffirmed its position, stating that the forensic evidence unequivocally supports the conclusion of a lone assailant, dismissing the initial claims of a gang rape. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, had been initially arrested by the Kolkata Police. However, the High Court subsequently transferred the case to the CBI, which ultimately filed a charge sheet naming only Roy, leading to his conviction and life imprisonment by the Sealdah Court.
Justice Ghosh further scrutinized the CBI’s methodology, questioning whether the DNA analysis was confined to the accused or extended to other potential suspects. The CBI clarified that the DNA profiling yielded only one matching profile, conclusively ruling out the involvement of other individuals.

Pursuit of Collateral Investigations

During the court proceedings, the CBI revealed that its investigation has extended to questioning medical personnel and nurses at R.G. Kar Hospital, ensuring a thorough examination of all facets of the case. The agency also disclosed its exploration of a potential conspiracy, aiming to identify individuals who may have attempted to manipulate or tamper with evidence.
Justice Ghosh also sought clarity on the timeline of the investigation, to which the CBI responded that the sheer volume of recorded statements made it challenging to provide a precise completion date. Expressing concern over potential delays, the court directed the agency to provide a progress update at the next hearing.

Legal Framework and State Intervention

The West Bengal government, while not opposing a reinvestigation, raised pertinent legal questions regarding the validity of such actions at this stage. Government counsel Kalyan Bandyopadhyay argued that only the trial court possesses the jurisdiction to address such issues post-conviction.
The case, initially handled by the Kolkata Police, was transferred to the CBI following concerns raised before the Supreme Court regarding the integrity of the initial investigation. The High Court, having received the case diary from the Kolkata Police, has now requested its production for review.

Familial Advocacy and Parallel Proceedings

The victim’s family, dissatisfied with the CBI’s findings, has advocated for a more comprehensive investigation. Their efforts to seek further scrutiny before the Sealdah Court’s verdict were initially declined by Justice Ghosh, pending Supreme Court authorization. However, the apex court recently ruled in their favor, allowing the High Court to proceed with hearings based on their petition.
Following this ruling, the first hearing took place last Monday, with the CBI submitting its status report on Friday. In a parallel development, the CBI also submitted a separate status report to the Sealdah Court, providing an update on its investigation into the related rape and murder case at R.G. Kar Hospital.
