Banks to Remain Open on Sept 27 Ahead of Proposed Three-Day Strike

The CSR Journal Magazine

The announcement states that public sector banks and regional rural banks will operate normally on Sunday, September 27. This decision has been implemented as part of the government’s efforts to ensure uninterrupted banking services in light of the anticipated three-day nationwide strike from September 28 to 30. This information was disclosed by the Ministry of Finance.

The Ministry has taken this step considering that the strike, called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), directly precedes the weekend holidays on September 26 and 27. This proactive measure aims to mitigate any potential disruption to banking services during this period.

The Reserve Bank of India has approved all bank branches, offices, ATM-linked branches, and currency chests to remain fully operational on September 27. This will enable banks to function seamlessly before the strike period begins.

Objectives Behind Keeping Banks Open

The government has reiterated its appeal to the bank unions to reconsider the proposed strike. On Tuesday, both the government and bank managements urged unions to resolve their concerns through dialogue while ensuring that essential banking services persist without interruptions.

The upcoming strike, scheduled for September 28 to 30, follows a previous one-day strike that took place on September 11. The concerns raised by the unions primarily include demands for a five-day banking week and the withdrawal of the Performance Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, which has been a point of contention between the unions and the government.

Government’s Response to Union Demands

The government has noted its commitment to address some of the unions’ concerns, indicating that it has already decided to suspend the PLI scheme after discussions with the unions. However, the request for a five-day workweek remains under consideration. The government is actively reviewing the demands to come to a fair resolution.

It was also mentioned that the proposed strike coincides with the half-yearly closing of banks on September 30, which could potentially disrupt reconciliation, provisioning, treasury, and market operations. Keeping banks operational on September 27 serves as a vital measure to alleviate any issues that might arise due to this overlap of events.

The Ministry of Finance affirmed that it will persist in taking necessary steps to
ensure that essential banking facilities are available to the public. Serious emphasis is placed on resolving outstanding issues with bank employees through meaningful dialogue to promote a stable banking environment for all customers.
