Banaras Locomotive Works Sends Tenth 3300 HP Locomotive to Mozambique

Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW) successfully dispatched the tenth unit of its indigenously manufactured 3300 horsepower AC-AC diesel-electric locomotive to Mozambique on February 21, Saturday. This dispatch marks a notable achievement for BLW in the realm of international locomotive manufacturing, reinforcing India’s presence on the global stage. The export represents the completion of a contract for a total of ten locomotives ordered by Mozambique.

Details of the Dispatch and Previous Units

The contract for manufacturing and exporting the ten locomotives was managed through RITES Limited. The initial two locomotives were shipped in June 2025, followed by a third in September, a fourth in October, and the fifth on December 12, 2025. The sixth locomotive was dispatched on December 15, 2025, the seventh on January 8, 2026, the eighth on January 23, and the ninth on February 17, 2026, as stated in the official release.

Specifications of the Locomotives

The 3300-horsepower Cape gauge (1067 mm) locomotives are designed to operate at speeds up to 100 km/h. They come equipped with advanced features aimed at increasing both operator comfort and efficiency, which include a refrigerator, hot plate, mobile holder, and a modern cabin layout.

Located in Varanasi, BLW is becoming an important center for locomotive manufacturing and exports under the aegis of Indian Railways. The facility is enhancing its capabilities in indigenous design and advanced railway technology, thereby contributing to the country’s growing influence in the global railway market.

Since 2014, BLW has been exporting locomotives to various countries, including Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Mozambique, playing a significant role in the improvement of their railway infrastructure.
