Ayushman Bharat gains momentum in Bengal, Rs 291 Crore in medical benefits delivered since August 16

The CSR Journal Magazine

The implementation of the Centre’s flagship health insurance scheme, Ayushman Bharat, in West Bengal has reportedly begun yielding significant results, with medical services worth Rs 291 crore provided to beneficiaries since its official rollout in the state on August 16, a day after Independence Day.

Following a change in the state’s political administration, the introduction of a joint central-state healthcare framework has opened new avenues for affordable medical treatment. The initiative comes against the backdrop of repeated allegations of irregularities under the previous government’s Swasthya Sathi scheme, particularly concerning difficulties faced by patients and their families in securing hospital beds.

Over 1.8 lakh patients benefit, including 4,600 treated outside Bengal

According to official figures, approximately 1.8 lakh people in West Bengal have received medical treatment or healthcare services under Ayushman Bharat since its introduction in the state.

Among them, around 4,600 patients have availed themselves of treatment at hospitals outside West Bengal, highlighting the scheme’s portability and its potential to facilitate access to healthcare across state boundaries.

Official data further indicates that the Centre has allocated Rs 426 crore towards implementing the scheme, while the state government’s contribution stands at Rs 284 crore.

4.13 Crore health cards issued

The scheme has also witnessed a substantial response in terms of enrolment. So far, approximately 4.13 crore residents of West Bengal have been issued Ayushman Bharat health cards, while another 1.8 crore people have applied for coverage.

Meanwhile, reports suggest that nearly 2.5 crore individuals have also submitted applications under the Chief Minister’s separate health insurance initiative.

The figures reflect growing public demand for government-supported healthcare coverage, particularly among economically vulnerable sections of society.

Nearly 2,500 hospitals in Bengal covered under scheme

One of the major advantages of Ayushman Bharat is its nationwide network of empanelled hospitals, allowing eligible beneficiaries to access medical treatment beyond their home states.

According to the figures provided, nearly 40,000 hospitals across India are associated with the scheme, including approximately 2,500 in West Bengal.

The programme aims to reduce the financial burden of hospitalisation by providing eligible beneficiaries with cashless treatment for covered medical procedures.

Years of delay end following change in government

Launched nationwide in 2018 by the Narendra Modi-led central government, Ayushman Bharat had faced prolonged obstacles in West Bengal because of objections raised by the previous state administration.

The scheme’s eventual roll out on August 16, following a change in government, marked a significant shift in the state’s healthcare policy, paving the way for cooperation between the Centre and the state in delivering health insurance benefits.

With Rs 291 crore worth of medical services already reported and lakhs of beneficiaries accessing treatment, the initiative is emerging as a major component of West Bengal’s public healthcare framework.

However, the scheme’s long-term effectiveness will depend on the availability of hospital beds, timely settlement of claims, transparency in implementation and uninterrupted access to quality treatment, particularly for economically disadvantaged patients.
