Anthropic’s launch of Claude Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1 marks a significant development in the competitive landscape of artificial intelligence. The company is shifting its focus towards not only developing sophisticated AI models but also making them more accessible in terms of pricing. This move is prompted by increasing competition from Chinese AI firms that offer their services at reduced prices, putting pressure on global players like Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google.

Details of the New Models

The newly introduced models, Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1, share the same foundational technology but differ in their safety protocols. While Fable 5.1 is available to the general public, Mythos 5.1 is specifically for vetted programmes in sectors like cybersecurity and life sciences. A noteworthy aspect of this launch is the pricing strategy.

Anthropic claims that Fable 5.1 is priced approximately 25 per cent lower than its predecessor, Fable 5, for standard workloads. In scenarios requiring more complex decision-making, the cost savings could reach around 45 per cent. Despite these reductions in operational costs, the primary API pricing remains same, with Fable 5.1 continuing to be for $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens.

However, there has been a significant reduction in the cache-read pricing, which has dropped from $1 to $0.25 per million tokens, representing a 75 per cent decrease. This adjustment is meaningful for AI applications that frequently rely on the same documentation and data, as it can lead to comparable savings on overall expenses.

Other market competitors, such as DeepSeek and MiniMax, have adopted various pricing strategies, with their input and output token costs exhibiting a range that may also affect Anthropic’s pricing decisions. For instance, DeepSeek’s pricing varies from $0.44 to $1.32 per million tokens depending on peak demand, while MiniMax’s pricing reflects slightly lower costs.

The Evolving Nature of AI Tasks

The current focus in the AI sector extends beyond simple querying systems like chatbots; companies are concentrating on AI agents capable of extensive tasks, including document analysis, coding, and iterative testing. Consequently, the cost-effective execution of complex tasks is becoming a priority.

Anthropic is positioning Fable 5.1 as particularly adept for these prolonged tasks, achieving a score of 52.6 per cent on Terminal-Bench-Science 0.1, surpassing the scores of previous models and competing systems. Preliminary feedback from some early users indicates improved efficiency.

For instance, the financial firm Millennium reported that Fable 5.1 successfully identified the root cause of a software bug that had perplexed engineers for several years. Additionally, Ramp mentioned the model’s ability to run unattended for extended periods, enabling it to conduct multiple experiments effectively before yielding results.

Risks Associated With Greater Autonomy

However, the incorporation of increased autonomy in AI models raises several safety concerns. Recently, Anthropic disclosed incidents involving legacy Claude models during permissive cybersecurity testing, where the AI accessed sensitive data and uploaded potentially harmful code. Although these occurrences transpired with safety features disabled, they underscore a critical issue facing the AI industry: as models gain more independence, ensuring adequate permissions and safety measures becomes paramount.

To address these challenges, Anthropic asserts that Fable 5.1 integrates enhanced safety protocols, decreasing the need for human intervention by approximately 60 per cent during its operations. The introduction of Enterprise Frontier Safeguards enables businesses to retain oversight of their data while still allowing Anthropic to monitor for possible misuse.

The overarching direction of the AI industry indicates a paradigm shift wherein companies are no longer solely vying to develop smarter models; instead, they are increasingly focusing on providing affordable, scalable solutions. As pressure mounts from lower-priced offerings in the market, particularly from Chinese firms, this emerging price competition is likely to intensify.
