Allegations of Enforced Disappearances of Baloch Youth in Pakistan

The CSR Journal Magazine

Reports indicate a surge in alleged enforced disappearances involving Baloch youth, with at least nineteen individuals reportedly taken into custody in major cities including Karachi, Quetta, and Gwadar. According to accounts from families and activists, this troubling situation has raised significant concerns about the safety of these young individuals. The Balochistan Post has highlighted specific instances where security forces have allegedly conducted coordinated operations resulting in multiple detentions.

Case of Kashif Baloch

One notable case involves Kashif Baloch, a resident of the Kalri area in Karachi’s Lyari neighborhood, who was reportedly picked up from his home around 2 a.m. on a Wednesday. Family members claim that since his detention, his whereabouts have been unknown. Relatives have also noted that Kashif was previously taken from his shop in Saddar in July and released after several months in custody, only to be reportedly detained again. Residents in the Lyari area reported that security personnel from both the police and Sindh Rangers conducted simultaneous late-night operations across neighborhoods such as Chakiwara, Baghdadi, and Kalri, during which at least thirteen individuals were reportedly taken and transported to undisclosed locations. The identities of those detained remain unverified independently.

Three More Individuals Taken Into Custody

In addition, the rights organization Voice for Baloch Missing Persons (VBMP) has reported that three more individuals – Daniyal Nasir, Muhammad Iqbal, and Irshad Ali – were taken into custody on 16 February near the NCCI Hospital in Karachi. These men had reportedly traveled to the city for medical treatment. VBMP claims that when the families approached local law enforcement to file formal complaints, they were met with refusal and harassment instead. The chairman of VBMP, Nasrullah Baloch, condemned these actions and urged authorities to ensure the safe return of the missing individuals.

In another reported incident in Quetta’s Killi Qambarani area, a young man named Junaid Ahmed was allegedly taken from his home during a late-night raid. His family maintains that he has no connections with any illegal activities. Similarly, in the Gwadar district’s Jiwani area, a 17-year-old student named Abdullah was reportedly detained and also moved to an undisclosed location. His family has stated that no official updates regarding his status have been provided.
