Ajay Rai, the head of the Congress party’s Uttar Pradesh unit, has responded to allegations concerning his consumption of non-vegetarian food during a feast in Ayodhya. This assertion arose after the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, publicly accused Rai of eating fish during a ceremonial event he attended.

Rai has urged Chief Minister Adityanath to present any evidence, such as photographs, to substantiate these claims. He stated that if the BJP could provide proof of him consuming fish at the event, he would resign from his position as Congress’s Uttar Pradesh president. His remarks underscore the tension between the Congress party and the ruling BJP amidst the ongoing controversy.

In his rebuttal, Rai also referred to the BJP’s broader political tactics, alleging that the party is damaging the nation’s social fabric. His comments reflect a determination to counter the BJP’s narrative regarding the incident, which has stirred significant public discourse.

Yogi Adityanath’s Critique

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s remarks were made during an address in Raebareli, where he accused Rai of hypocrisy. The Chief Minister highlighted the apparent contradiction in Rai’s actions—offering prayers at a significant spiritual site while allegedly engaging in activities that contradict the sanctity of the city.

During his speech, Adityanath likened the conduct of Rai and the Congress party to a chameleon, capable of changing its colours, suggesting that it is misleading for public figures to behave in such a dual manner. The statements made by the Chief Minister indicate a strategic political attack aimed at discrediting the Congress leadership.

The crux of the controversy revolves around a feast hosted in Ayodhya by Congress politician Ram Nihal Nishad. Following his induction into the Congress party, a video emerged depicting the preparation of fish, igniting discontent among political and religious circles. Various political leaders and religious figures from the Hindu community condemned the event, arguing against the consumption of non-vegetarian food in a historically and spiritually significant city, especially during the month of Sawan.

Context of the Controversy

Union Minister and BJP state president Pankaj Chaudhary emphasised that the actions of the Congress party reflect a disregard for Hindu religious sentiments and values. He criticises the party for allegedly undermining the sanctity of Ayodhya, a city deeply revered in Hindu culture. Chaudhary’s comments highlight how the incident has been framed within broader ideological conflicts between the two major political parties in India.

As part of his defence, Ajay Rai highlighted that the feast was specifically organised by the Nishad community, which has traditional ties to fishing. He stated that his attendance at the programme was simply a show of solidarity with the community rather than an endorsement of any specific dietary choices. Rai pointed out the historical connection between the Nishad community and Lord Ram, also aiming to dispel any notion of wrongdoing on his part.

Rai concluded his statements by suggesting that if Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is unable to substantiate the allegations against him, the Chief Minister should consider resigning from his position. This assertion serves as a further escalation in the ongoing political exchanges between the Congress party and the BJP in Uttar Pradesh.
