11 Arrested, Including Directors, After SBL Energy Blast in Nagpur Kills 19 Workers

Nagpur Rural Police have arrested a total of 11 individuals, including senior officials and supervisory staff from SBL Energy Limited, following a tragic explosion at the company’s explosives manufacturing unit located in Raulgaon, Katol taluka. The incident, which occurred on February 28, resulted in the deaths of 19 workers and left 23 others injured, some of whom are suffering from serious burn injuries.

Details of the Arrests and Charges Filed

According to a statement released by the Nagpur Rural Police, those arrested include company executives, production managers, and operational supervisors responsible for managing explosive materials and ensuring safety protocols at the facility. The individuals have been presented before the court and remanded to police custody from March 2 until March 7 for further investigation. Charges have been filed under various sections concerning culpable homicide, endangering human life and safety, and negligent handling of explosive substances.

Explosion Timing and Location

The explosion took place between 6:00 AM and 9:00 AM within Building No. 16 (B) on the company’s premises. The impact of the blast was severe, leading to significant casualties among the workers. Authorities have reported that many of the injured are currently receiving medical treatment for their wounds.

Preliminary Inquiry Findings and Safety Violations

Initial inquiries conducted by the Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health (DISH) and the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) have indicated serious infractions of safety regulations and procedural negligence at the facility. These findings led to the registration of offences by the Kalmeshwar Police against the company management and other relevant personnel.

Directors of the Company Under Detention

In addition to the supervisory staff, police have detained company directors Ravi Phophrao Sharma and Rakesh Sudhakar Tiwari, as legal proceedings against them are underway. The police have stated that safety protocols were not adequately adhered to, and they will determine accountability following a thorough investigation.
