In a significant turn in the alleged sexual assault case of a female medical student in Durgapur, the police have arrested the victim’s male classmate. Initial theories of a gang-rape have been ruled out, as the survivor, in her confidential statement, informed the police that only one individual was the perpetrator. The arrest of the classmate followed a reconstruction of the incident at the scene.

Victim Names Only One Assailant

Sunil Kumar Choudhury, the Commissioner of Police (CP) for the Asansol Durgapur Police Commissionerate, stated, “There are five accused. The presence of the five individuals, other than the victim’s friend, whom the survivor initially mentioned, has been established at the place of occurrence. However, the victim’s statement indicates that only one accused person committed the rape.”

The victim’s confidential statement detailed the sequence of events, including the secluded route she was taken through into the jungle, where three miscreants surrounded her, and why her classmate left the scene. She reportedly questioned her classmate as to why he did not inform the college authorities or the police about the incident, despite having his phone with him.

Classmate’s Role Under Scrutiny

CP Choudhury confirmed that the role of the victim’s classmate is under question. “We are repeatedly questioning him. For that reason, we have also seized his clothes,” he said. Following the reconstruction of the crime scene with the classmate, he was placed under arrest, as the CP stated that his role was not above suspicion.

The case has been registered under sections related to alleged robbery, grievous hurt, extortion, and abandonment of a child (in this context, potentially implying neglect or endangerment) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Crime Scene Reconstruction and Evidence

A large police team, led by Durgapur DCP Abhishek Gupta, visited the jungle behind the medical college on Monday. They separately conducted a crime scene reconstruction with both the accused and the victim’s classmate. Police meticulously examined the route taken by the victim and her classmate from the hospital exit. The clothes worn by the accused on the night of the incident have also been recovered.

Medical Report Indicated Sexual Assault

It is noteworthy that the victim’s medical report had already suggested sexual assault, with doctors noting lacerations and internal tears in the genital area, along with severe bleeding. Following this, the victim’s confidential statement confirmed that the rape was committed by a single individual.
