US President Donald Trump has sued The New York Times, four of its reporters, and publisher Penguin Random House for defamation and libel, citing reputational damage. A Florida court filing showed that Trump is seeking at least $15 billion in damages.
Beyond this case, Trump has also pursued legal action against other major media outlets, including The Wall Street Journal and Paramount. Earlier, he sued The Wall Street Journal for $10 billion over reports claiming his name appeared on a birthday greeting for Jeffrey Epstein that included a sexually suggestive drawing.
In what he describes as “false or misleading coverage,” Trump has repeatedly gone after various media organizations during his second term, demanding billions of dollars in damages.
The latest lawsuit lists a series of New York Times articles, including one published ahead of the 2024 presidential election that questioned his fitness for office. It also cites a 2024 book published by Penguin Random House titled Lucky Loser: How Donald Trump Squandered His Father’s Fortune and Created the Illusion of Success, which he claims defamed him.
“The defendants meticulously published the book and the articles, knowing that these publications were filled with repugnant distortion and fabrication,” stated the court filings.
TikTok Ban in US
Meanwhile, another Trump-related development emerged from Washington on Tuesday: the U.S. and China have reached a deal on TikTok. Under the agreement, the ByteDance-owned short video app will transfer its American assets to U.S. ownership in order to remain operational in the country, potentially resolving a saga that has dragged on for nearly a year.
