UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer Affirms UK Will Not Join US Blockade of Strait of Hormuz

The CSR Journal Magazine

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has stated that the United Kingdom will not participate in the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, recently announced by United States President Donald Trump. In an interview with BBC radio, Starmer emphasised that the UK is unwilling to become entangled in the ongoing conflict involving the US and Israel against Iran.

Starmer highlighted the importance of reopening the strait, which is a critical passage for global oil supplies, reportedly handling around 20 per cent of the world’s oil during peacetime. He reiterated the UK’s commitment to ensuring that the strait remains accessible, indicating that efforts will continue in that direction.

Military Movements and Responses

As tensions escalate in the region, traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has faced significant restrictions since the onset of the conflict. Iran has permitted only a limited number of vessels representing sympathetic nations, notably China, to pass through the area. The US military announced plans to block all maritime traffic entering and exiting Iranian ports starting at 14:00 GMT, although the specifics regarding enforcement remain unclear.

The US military’s Central Command has indicated that the blockade will affect vessels from all nations that attempt to enter or leave Iranian ports along the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman. However, it was confirmed that US forces would not obstruct vessels transiting the strait to non-Iranian ports, striving for impartial enforcement of the blockade.

In a recent social media update, President Trump expressed his goal of clearing the strait of mines to facilitate the reopening of shipping routes, asserting that Iran should not benefit from its control over this vital waterway.

Reactions from International Leaders

French President Emmanuel Macron announced a forthcoming conference between France and the UK aimed at restoring navigation freedom in the strait. Macron underlined the necessity of exhausting diplomatic avenues to attain a lasting resolution to the conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran.

International criticism of Trump’s blockade has emerged, with the Spanish Defence Minister Margarita Robles describing the proposed naval blockade as illogical and part of an escalating situation that several nations have been drawn into. Similarly, Turkiye’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan called for negotiations with Iran, advocating for the immediate reopening of the strait through diplomatic means.

China also condemned the plan, with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs urging both Iran and the US to avoid reigniting broader hostilities. The spokesman, Guo Jiakun, noted that maintaining the security and stability of the Strait of Hormuz is vital for the collective interests of the international community, given its significance as a key trade route for goods and energy.
