On July 27, 2015, our nation lost a visionary leader Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. The “Missile Man of India,” breathed his last after he collapsed while delivering a lecture at IIM Shillong. The renowned scientist served as the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007.

Born on October 15, 1931, in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, he rose to prominence for his work in missile development and space research, earning him the title “Missile Man of India”.

Dr Kalam played a crucial role in India’s missile program, overseeing the development of Agni and Prithvi missiles. He contributed significantly to India’s space program, including the successful launch of the Rohini satellite using the SLV-III launch vehicle. Dr Kalam played a key role in the 1998 nuclear tests, which established India as a nuclear power.

He was accorded India’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna in 1997. He was also awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1981 for his contributions to science and engineering. He has also been recognised with the Padma Vibhushan in 1990 for his exceptional service to the nation.
