Tarique Rahman Set To Become Bangladesh’s First Male PM In 35 Years

The CSR Journal Magazine

Bangladesh is on the brink of a historic political shift as the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Tarique Rahman, races toward a decisive victory in the 2026 parliamentary elections, positioning him to become the country’s first male prime minister in 35 years.

The party has called for nationwide prayers rather than celebrations, signalling a sombre return to power two decades after the end of former prime minister Khaleda Zia’s tenure in 2006.

BNP Secures Strong Mandate

Preliminary results indicate that the BNP has taken a commanding lead across the country, with vote counting showing the party ahead in a large majority of constituencies. Polling was held in 299 seats, with voting in one constituency cancelled due to the death of a candidate.

More than 127 million eligible voters participated in the election in a nation of about 170 million people. Nearly 2,000 candidates contested, making it one of the most competitive polls in Bangladesh’s history. For the first time, Bangladeshi citizens living abroad were also allowed to vote through a postal system.

Jamaat-e-Islami, which led a broad opposition coalition, conceded defeat, though one of its allies has alleged irregularities and demanded an audit of the results before the final declaration.

End Of Long-Running Political Rivalry

The election marks the first national vote since the July 2024 uprising that forced long-time prime minister Sheikh Hasina from power after 15 years in office. Her Awami League was absent from the contest, dramatically reshaping the political field.

Bangladesh’s politics has historically revolved around two dominant families: the Awami League led by Hasina and the BNP founded by Khaleda Zia. With Zia’s death in December and Hasina in exile, the traditional “Battle of Begums” era appears to have ended.

Tarique Rahman, Zia’s son, returned to the country after 17 years in exile to lead the campaign, energising BNP supporters and consolidating the party’s position.

New Opposition Landscape Emerges

With the BNP poised to form the government, Jamaat-e-Islami is likely to emerge as the principal opposition force. Analysts say the new political alignment could reshape domestic policies as well as foreign relations.

The transition also comes at a delicate time for Bangladesh’s economy and social stability following years of unrest.

As final results are awaited, the country appears set to enter a new chapter after decades dominated by dynastic politics, with Tarique Rahman preparing to assume leadership amid high expectations and significant challenges.
