The recent heavy monsoon rains have caused significant flooding in Mayurbhanj district, Odisha, resulting in extensive damage across the region. Reports indicate that numerous villages have been submerged, disrupting essential transport routes and forcing thousands of residents to evacuate their homes. Local authorities have initiated broad rescue and relief operations to aid those impacted by these severe conditions.

As of September 26, the flooding has affected 20 blocks within the district, alongside one municipality and one Notified Area Council (NAC). Areas like Betnoti and Badasahi have been particularly hard hit, with villages such as Patalipura and Kalama in Betnoti block and Salagaon, Managobindapur, Chandanpur, Durgapur, Kendudiha, and Balabhadrapur in Badasahi block reported to be underwater. The inundation has left residents struggling, as both homes and fields are submerged.

A critical situation has developed at the Budhabalanga Nakhara bridge, which is reportedly experiencing water levels ranging between two to three feet. The increased water levels have compounded the challenges of transportation, leading to a complete halt of traffic on vital routes connecting Betnoti to Badasahi and Manatri to Baisinga. Such road closures have not only isolated several villages but have also complicated relief efforts to supply essential goods to afflicted areas.

Relief Efforts Underway With Evacuations and Support Services

In light of the flooding, authorities have successfully relocated 10,373 individuals to safer locations. A total of 89 relief camps have been established to provide shelter, while 72 free kitchen centres are ensuring that those without access to food can receive meals during this crisis. These centres play a crucial role in providing nourishment to families displaced from their residences.

The Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), along with 18 fire service teams, have been deployed to the areas most severely affected. These teams are engaged in rescuing individuals, supplying critical resources, and closely monitoring water levels. The local administration, in coordination with disaster response units, is actively facilitating these efforts to ensure the timely provision of aid to all who require assistance.

As floodwaters begin to recede in various parts of the region, some normalcy is reportedly returning. Areas such as Udala, Kaptipada, Bangiriposi, and Saraskana are experiencing improvements, with previously disrupted roads reopening and residents gradually resuming their daily activities. Despite these positive developments, authorities caution that the overall risk of flooding persists.

School Closures Amid Flood Threat and Ongoing Relief Operations

The flood crisis has resulted in considerable inconvenience and property damage, with many families experiencing the loss of household items and crops. However, the government’s coordinated response has been instrumental in mitigating the impact on human life. Officials are advising residents in low-lying areas to remain vigilant and adhere to guidance from local authorities.

Relief operations are ongoing, with teams checking on remote villages to ensure the provision of food, clean water, and medical assistance. Special consideration is being given to vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and individuals with health concerns residing in temporary shelters.

With the gradual receding of floodwaters in some regions of Mayurbhanj, the focus remains on immediate relief and long-term recovery strategies. Authorities are assessing the full extent of the damage to facilitate adequate support for affected families once the situation stabilises.
