Rs 5,000 Direct Aid For 1.31 Crore Women As Stalin Reaffirms Welfare Push

The CSR Journal Magazine

Ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly election, Chief Minister M. K. Stalin on Friday reaffirmed his government’s commitment to women’s welfare. He announced a major cash transfer under the state’s flagship scheme for women.

Calling the assistance a “right” rather than a welfare scheme, Stalin said the government would honour its promise despite political pressure. In a post on X, he confirmed that Rs 5,000 had been credited to 1.31 crore beneficiaries of the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai Thittam.

Advance Payment And Special Assistance

According to the Chief Minister, the amount includes Rs 3,000 as advance instalments for February, March and April. In addition, Rs 2,000 has been given as special summer assistance.

The scheme provides Rs 1,000 per month to eligible women heads of households. The money is transferred directly to their bank accounts. As a result, it has become one of the government’s most visible welfare initiatives.

Stalin stressed that the payment is an entitlement meant to support women’s financial independence. “No matter who creates obstacles, I will not retreat,” he said. He added that the promise to women across the state will be fulfilled.

Political Context Ahead Of Elections

The announcement comes as election campaigning intensifies. Therefore, political observers see the move as significant for women voters, who form a large share of the electorate.

Stalin expressed confidence that women would support his government again. He also accused opposition parties of trying to block the payments during the election period. According to him, such attempts undermine women’s rights.

“Using elections as an excuse, they are trying to stall the rights allocation for three months,” he said. However, he insisted that the Dravidian Model government would continue the payments without compromise.

Opposition Promises And Future Plans

Meanwhile, the opposition All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) has announced its own welfare promises. These include raising social security pensions from Rs 1,200 to Rs 2,000 for several vulnerable groups. The beneficiaries would include senior citizens, widows, abandoned women, persons with disabilities and transgender persons.

Looking ahead, Stalin promised that under “Dravidian Model 2.0,” the monthly assistance would double to Rs 2,000. He described this as a personal commitment to women across Tamil Nadu.

Overall, the large-scale transfer underscores the importance of direct benefit schemes in the state’s politics. In particular, parties are focusing on women voters, who are expected to play a decisive role in the election outcome.
