Pace, Pain, and Patience: Mayank Yadav Aims for IPL 2026 Comeback After Injury Layoff

The CSR Journal Magazine

During a recent training session with the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), the sharp sound of the cricket ball hitting the wicketkeeper’s gloves signaled a promising return for Mayank Yadav, a young fast bowler known for his remarkable speed. Having made headlines in 2024 with deliveries clocking 156.7 km/h, Yadav is now in the process of regaining his form following a challenging nine-month hiatus. This period included specialized back surgery in New Zealand and a carefully structured rehabilitation program at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. At just 23 years old, Yadav’s journey back to competitive cricket has involved both physical recovery and mental fortitude.

Challenges Faced and Overcoming Setbacks

Mayank’s recent history has been marred by a series of injuries that have hindered his performance. Over the last ten months, he has participated in only two competitive matches, both of which occurred in the lead-up to India’s T20 World Cup preparations in February, where he represented India A. Nevertheless, during his time with the LSG, Yadav is gradually rediscovering his rhythm and confidence. He expresses a reassuring sentiment about his condition, stating, “I am completely fine. I am on track. I don’t have any issue,” while remaining optimistic about his pace.

A Frustrating Journey of Recovering Form

Yadav’s ascension in the cricket world is characterized by a frustrating cycle of interruptions due to injuries. After an explosive debut that earned him back-to-back Player of the Match titles in his first two IPL games, a lower abdominal strain cut short his appearances after only four matches. The following 2025 season brought further disappointment.

Despite being retained for a significant Rs 11 crore, recurring lumbar stress fractures and additional toe issues limited him to just two matches before injuries sidelined him for the rest of the season. Ultimately, the seriousness of his back injury led him to seek surgical intervention in New Zealand, a path taken by several elite cricketers to extend their careers.

Focus Shift Towards Longevity and Craft

The extended break from cricket has compelled the Delhi-born pacer to confront the demands his body faces while bowling at such high speeds. Yadav acknowledges that he has not played a competitive match for several months and emphasizes the importance of making his comeback with intensity. He also addresses the inevitable questions about whether he can return to form post-surgery, underscoring that his focus lies on his performance and not merely on speed. “Managing injuries is out of my control; I am concentrating on the process rather than solely on speed,” he remarks.

A New Chapter with Lucknow Super Giants

As the Lucknow Super Giants gear up for the 2026 season, they have chosen to retain Mayank, demonstrating their confidence in his abilities by securing him with a Rs 11 crore contract once again. The support from team owner Sanjiv Goenka and former mentor Zaheer Khan has not gone unnoticed by Yadav.

This coming season, he will be part of a formidable bowling lineup that includes veteran pacer Mohammed Shami. Yadav holds aspirations of representing India again, remarking, “Everybody dreams of playing for India. This season is crucial for me as I aim to return to the international stage.” With preparations underway for LSG’s opening match against Delhi Capitals on April 1, 2026, Yadav is poised to make his mark in the IPL once again.
