Oxford Students Commend India’s Innovative Educational Practices at UNHRC

During the 61st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva, two students from the University of Oxford expressed their admiration for India’s educational strategies that promote comprehensive learning and inclusive access to schooling. Zoe Barclay and Petrina Lander shared their insights in an exclusive interview, highlighting the significance of these innovative practices in fostering vocational skills among youth.

Barclay pointed out that many young individuals in India exhibit significant ambition and determination, driven by the realization that opportunities may not always be readily available. The students highlighted the work of the Akshar Foundation in Assam, which implements key components of the National Education Policy 2020. This model emphasizes concepts like peer learning, mentorship, and flexible grade placement based on students’ abilities rather than their ages. Through peer learning initiatives, older students play an instrumental role in mentoring younger ones, fostering both academic understanding and essential soft skills such as communication, empathy, and leadership.

Focus on Inclusivity in Education

Akshar Foundation is dedicated to including children from disadvantaged backgrounds, particularly those who have faced challenges like child labor or early marriage. By allowing students to advance at their own pace, this educational model aims to dismantle barriers that may hinder access to learning opportunities. The foundation’s efforts reflect a commitment to inclusiveness and equitable education for all.

Barclay and Lander also stressed the importance of integrating technology and digital skills into educational systems to adequately prepare young people for future employment.
