During the 61st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva, two students from the University of Oxford expressed their admiration for India’s educational strategies that promote comprehensive learning and inclusive access to schooling. Zoe Barclay and Petrina Lander shared their insights in an exclusive interview, highlighting the significance of these innovative practices in fostering vocational skills among youth.

Barclay pointed out that many young individuals in India exhibit significant ambition and determination, driven by the realization that opportunities may not always be readily available. The students highlighted the work of the Akshar Foundation in Assam, which implements key components of the National Education Policy 2020. Through peer learning initiatives, older students play an instrumental role in mentoring younger ones, fostering both academic understanding and essential soft skills such as communication, empathy, and leadership.

Akshar Foundation is dedicated to including children from disadvantaged backgrounds, particularly those who have faced challenges like child labor or early marriage.
