The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has reported the discovery of natural gas in a deepwater well within the Mahanadi Basin, situated approximately 43 km off the Odisha coast. This find is seen as a significant contribution to India’s ongoing efforts to enhance domestic energy sources. The discovery occurred in the MDW-28 well, which was drilled to a depth of around 1,450 metres. ONGC announced that gas flowed from the well for three consecutive days at promising rates alongside a sustained pressure, although the specifics regarding flow rate and the estimated gas reserves have not been revealed yet.

The perforation of this well was completed on 18 September 2026, following a comprehensive assessment of subsurface data.
