Two-Headed Snake with Four Eyes Rescued in Gujarat Farm

The CSR Journal Magazine

A rare snake featuring two heads and four eyes has been rescued from a farm located in the Dahod district of Gujarat. This extraordinary finding has captured the attention of both locals and wildlife enthusiasts alike. The snake, measuring approximately six inches in length, was discovered in a field in Agaswani village within the Dhanpur taluka, as reported by Sandesh.

Upon being alerted by residents in the area, members of the Dahod Prakruti Mitra Mandal promptly arrived at the scene to safely retrieve the unusual snake. Following the rescue, the snake has been identified as a wolf snake, a non-venomous species typically regarded as harmless to humans. However, its unique characteristics set it apart, attributed to a rare developmental condition known as bicephaly.

Understanding Bicephaly and Its Rarity

Bicephaly is a condition in which an animal develops two heads from a single body, representing a rare congenital developmental abnormality. Such conditions can arise in various species, including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish, although occurrences are infrequent. This particular malformation generally occurs during embryonic stages when the separation of two developing embryos fails to complete, or when the embryo’s patterning is abnormal.

Scientific literature identifies bicephaly as the most commonly reported major malformation in snakes, yet it is still considered rare within the species. In this case, both heads possess separate eyes, and they are believed to have independent brain and nervous-system structures. Variations in the degree of independence between the two heads can occur, which may influence their coordination in terms of actions.

According to the Prakruti Mitra Mandal, this incident is reportedly the first documented case of a two-headed snake in Gujarat. The group further elaborated that only a handful of similar occurrences involving two-headed snakes have been recorded in India, which include two cobras and three wolf snakes, adding to the intrigue surrounding this fascinating animal.

Challenges and Care for the Rescued Snake

Bicephaly, classified under the broader category of polycephaly, can pose significant challenges for the affected animal. The presence of two heads can lead to independent responses to stimuli such as movement, food, or potential threats, resulting in conflicting actions that may hinder survival in their natural habitat. The rescued snake has been estimated to be about one year old, as per local wildlife rescuers.

The Prakruti Mitra Mandal team is currently undertaking measures to ensure the animal’s safety and to provide appropriate care. This incident has sparked interest in the biological variations that can occasionally arise in nature. Rehabilitation efforts are aimed at optimising the snake’s well-being and addressing the unique requirements presented by its condition.

Overall, the discovery of this two-headed snake not only highlights the rarity of such occurrences but also advances understanding of the complexities involved in developmental biology. The unique creature exemplifies the various forms of life that inhabit the region and reinforces the importance of wildlife conservation efforts in preserving biodiversity.
