Manipur Chief Secretary Announces Efforts to Resettle People Displaced During Conflict

Manipur Chief Secretary PK Singh announced that the state will begin efforts to resettle people displaced by the ongoing conflict in Manipur since 2023. On Friday, the Chief Secretary stated that this resettlement will be completed in three phases by the end of the year.

Thousands of people from the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities have been living in relief camps since the conflict began. According to estimates from the Manipur Home Department, approximately 75,000 people are currently housed in over 280 relief camps across the valley and hill districts.

The current plan, as announced by the Chief Secretary, is to close these camps by the end of the year. Singh also stated that around 5,000 people have already returned to their homes.

“We have had a good number of discussions among ourselves, the Central Government, and the Ministry of Home Affairs. We have come up with a three-phase plan. The first is for those who want to return immediately—that is, by July. A good number have already started going back. The number was 62,000 in the beginning; now it is around 57,000. The second phase will be by October, and the third by December,” said the Chief Secretary, speaking to reporters at an event in Imphal, the capital city of Manipur.
