India’s Spin Coach Optimistic About Kuldeep Yadav’s Comeback

The CSR Journal Magazine

Kuldeep Yadav has not met the performance expectations set for him in the first Test against Sri Lanka; however, the Indian team management remains optimistic about his future contributions. Sairaj Bahutule, the spin bowling coach, has voiced his belief that Kuldeep can make a strong comeback in the upcoming second Test in Colombo. He maintains that Kuldeep is an integral part of the team’s strategy moving forward.

In the Galle Test, Kuldeep could only manage one wicket across two innings, delivering 25 overs in total. His lone wicket occurred in the first innings, dismissing Kamindu Mendis for 14 runs, while conceding 65 runs in that innings. In the subsequent innings, he bowled another 11 overs, allowing 38 runs without taking any further wickets.

Comparison with Other Spinners

The performance of Kuldeep Yadav was markedly different from that of India’s other two spinners, Manav Suthar and Ravindra Jadeja, who collectively took 14 wickets in the match. Suthar emerged as the standout bowler, claiming 10 wickets while Jadeja contributed four to the team’s effort. Suthar’s effectiveness was particularly noticeable in the first innings, where he struck four times to bowl Sri Lanka out for 284 runs; Jadeja also played a key role, taking three wickets during the innings.

Bahutule pointed out the challenges Kuldeep faced compared to his fellow spinners. He insisted that the conditions did not favour the wrist-spinner’s technique, which is often more susceptible to variations in the ball’s softness than that of finger spin bowlers. As the Kookaburra ball lost its shine, it became increasingly difficult for Kuldeep to secure assistance from the pitch.

Challenges Faced in Galle Test

With the second Test set to commence in Colombo on August 23, there exists an opportunity for Kuldeep to demonstrate his skills on a potentially different surface. The Indian team is riding high on their recent performance, having gained a 1-0 lead in the series following a convincing 165-run victory in Galle. This win also marks the continuation of their success in Tests on Sri Lankan soil, now extending to six consecutive victories.

As the series progresses, the coaching staff and teammates share an unwavering belief in Kuldeep Yadav’s ability to recover and perform, marking the upcoming Test as a significant opportunity for him to affirm his place within the squad.
