A computer training institute teacher in Kolkata allegedly committed suicide after sending a video suicide note to her former live-in partner around 10 pm on Saturday. The deceased Sudipta Maity (23) was a resident of Kolkata’s Bansdroni area in a rented apartment and was associated with a computer training institute in Bhowanipore. Her hanging body was recovered by the police from a room of the rented house.
Woman claimed she was suffering from depression in video note
According to police, Sudipta sent a video recording to her live-in partner before her death informing about her suicide. In the video message, the young woman said that she was going to commit suicide. There was no reason for her to live anymore. She claimed she was suffering from mental depression and clarified that no one is responsible for her death.
Upon receiving the video message, Sudipta’s friend rushed to the rented house in Bansdroni from Maheshtala. But by the time he reached, the drastic step was taken.
The police are investigating what made the teacher take such a decision and why she sent that video message to her male friend. After watching the video message, the police initially speculate that the teacher was suffering from depression. However, it is not yet clear whether she had financial, mental or physical problems.
“In the message, the woman held no one responsible for her death and asked the friend to ensure her body was handed over to her parents. We are questioning the friend to know what exactly happened that led her to the decision,” said a senior officer of Kolkata Police.
Neighbours claim the duo were not living together lately
According to local sources, the teacher and her male friend lived together in the rented apartment in Vivekananda Park area of Bansdroni. The man was not present at home at the time of the incident. He rushed to the spot after receiving her video message. There is a room next to the kitchen where the woman’s body was found hanging. Neighbours assisted in retrieving the body. After Sudipta was taken to a nearby hospital, doctors declared her dead.
“Once the man reached, he, along with the landlord and other local residents, broke open the door to find the woman hanging from the ceiling fan using a long scarf (dupatta) as a ligature,” said an officer of Bansdroni Police Station, who was called to the scene by the landlord following the discovery around 11 pm.
Locals revealed that she had been living together with the male friend for several months, however, the two were not living together lately, revealed neighbours. The woman experienced an emotional breakdown, possibly after a spat with the friend, following which she sent him a video message stating her intention to die by suicide, police said.
Police are investigating whether distance from her lover was a trigger behind her alleged suicide. The body has been sent for autopsy to determine the cause of death and confirm whether any foul play was involved. Her family in East Midnapore district has also been informed.
