Kolkata Knight Riders Name Rinku Singh Vice-Captain, to Support Ajinkya Rahane for IPL 2026

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have made a significant decision for the IPL 2026 season by naming Rinku Singh as the franchise’s vice-captain. This announcement was made during the “Knights Unplugged” event at Eden Gardens. Rinku, a 28-year-old left-handed batsman, will work alongside veteran captain Ajinkya Rahane. The franchise’s choice reflects a shift towards nurturing fresh leadership within the team. KKR shared on X, “God’s plan has a new chapter,” referencing Rinku’s well-known phrase. Rinku has been with KKR since 2018 and has transformed into a crucial player in the team’s batting lineup.

Rinku’s Journey with KKR

Rinku Singh’s trajectory in the IPL is noteworthy. Initially, he was not a regular in the playing XI but has since become a central figure in the team’s middle order. His consistency in domestic cricket for Uttar Pradesh set the stage for his breakthrough moment in 2023, when he hit five consecutive sixes against the Gujarat Titans, completing a memorable chase. This incident elevated him to prominence as KKR’s go-to player for critical match situations. Although he had a relatively subdued outing in the 2025 season, where he scored 206 runs, KKR demonstrated their trust by retaining him at a price of Rs 13 crore before the auction. Rinku’s impressive strike rate of over 200 in death overs positions him among the elite finishers globally.

T20 World Cup and Personal Resilience

Entering the 2026 season, Rinku carries with him the confidence of having won a T20 World Cup medal. His contribution was pivotal in India’s success at the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, solidifying his reputation as a dependable international player. However, Rinku faced personal challenges prior to the season, notably the passing of his father, Khanchand Singh, during the World Cup. His ability to return to the game and his subsequent ascent to vice-captaincy showcase a commendable mental toughness that KKR hopes will enhance his leadership on the field.

Challenges for Captain Ajinkya Rahane

As attention turns to Rinku, captain Ajinkya Rahane is under increasing scrutiny. Rahane was KKR’s top run-scorer in 2025 with 390 runs, but the overall team performance was disappointing, finishing eighth. At 37 years old, Rahane’s role has become critical. He recently displayed his prowess with a rapid 20-ball fifty in a practice match, yet questions loom regarding his leadership abilities, especially after the departure of key players like Andre Russell and Venkatesh Iyer. The introduction of record-signing Cameron Green and Rinku’s grooming for leadership intensify the pressures on Rahane as he navigates his captaincy during this pivotal season.

Rahane’s Outlook for the Season

In March, Rahane expressed his resolve amid approaching challenges. He remarked on the nature of leadership, “Every year, there are different challenges as a player and also as a captain.” He emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive perspective in the face of adversities, stating, “I’ve been leading the team since last year and am really grateful to the franchise for this responsibility.” With the season kicking off on March 29 against the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium, both Rahane and Rinku will aim to steer KKR towards success.
