The CSR Journal Magazine

The police in Dakshina Kannada district have initiated legal action against a government school following accusations of transporting students in an unsuitable vehicle, a pickup van. This incident, which is said to contravene established safety regulations and the Motor Vehicles Act, was brought to light on February 9, 2026, in the village of Balanja, Parari. Authorities reported that the pickup van was observed transporting a group of schoolchildren from Balanja to Nalkuru for a field study.

Concerns Over Student Safety

Further complicating the situation, a tipper lorry was reportedly in transit on the same public road while the children were being transported. This raised significant concerns regarding the safety of the students, prompting a reaction from local residents. In response to a formal complaint lodged by Dharanendra, a local resident, the Venur police have proceeded to file a case against the school administration.

Recent Ragging Incident in Devanahalli

In an unrelated incident, the Karnataka police reported a serious occurrence of ragging at a college situated in Devanahalli, in the Bengaluru Rural district. A formal complaint has been filed against 23 senior students, who are alleged to have engaged in harassment of first-year students. The police have confirmed that three of the accused individuals have been arrested, while efforts are ongoing to locate the others involved.

Details of the Allegations

According to statements from the Devanahalli police, the senior students are accused of subjecting newcomers enrolled in BBA and BCA programs to continuous harassment over recent days. The allegations detail that seniors compelled junior students to procure alcohol and cigarettes, as well as enforced harsh punitive measures, such as requiring students to stand for extended periods while holding their books.

Ongoing Investigations

The two incidents have highlighted significant concerns regarding student safety and welfare within educational institutions in the region. The local police and education authorities have indicated they will take necessary measures to address these issues thoroughly. Investigations are currently underway in both cases, with a focus on ensuring the safety and well-being of all students involved.
