Karnataka Horror: Differently-Abled Teen Beaten With Plastic Pipe, Chilli Thrown In Eyes

The CSR Journal Magazine

A case of alleged abuse at a residential school for children with special needs in Karnataka’s Bagalkot district has sparked widespread outrage after a disturbing video surfaced online. The incident reportedly took place at the Divyajyoti School for Differently Abled Children in the Navanagar area of Bagalkot and involved a 16-year-old student.

The video, which has since circulated on social media, shows the teenager being assaulted inside the school premises, raising serious concerns about the safety of children entrusted to such institutions.

Allegations of Assault and Cruel Treatment

According to police and media reports, the boy was allegedly beaten with a belt and a plastic pipe by school staff. Despite collapsing to the ground and crying in pain, the assault is said to have continued, with others present failing to intervene.

Investigators have identified Akshay Indulkar as the prime accused, alleging that he led the attack. His wife, Anandi, is also accused of participating by throwing chilli powder into the boy’s eyes. The person recording the incident is reportedly heard laughing in the background, further intensifying public anger.

Video Leak Triggers Public Anger

Sources say the video was leaked by a former employee of the institution, leading to sharp reactions from parents, activists, and the wider public. Many have questioned how such treatment could occur in a school meant to protect and support children with disabilities.

The footage has renewed calls for stricter monitoring and accountability in residential care facilities across the state.

Police Action and Investigation Underway

Following a complaint filed by the victim’s parents, Bagalkot police registered a First Information Report (FIR) in the case. Authorities have detained Akshay Indulkar, his wife, and two other individuals associated with the school for questioning.

Police officials said investigations are ongoing and further action will be taken based on evidence and statements collected.

Calls for Accountability and Reform

The incident has highlighted gaps in oversight at special needs institutions. Child rights groups and parents are demanding strict punishment for those responsible and stronger safeguards to prevent such incidents in the future. The case has once again brought attention to the urgent need for regular inspections and transparent grievance mechanisms in schools caring for vulnerable children.
