Israeli Parliament Illuminated in Indian Tricolour Ahead of PM Modi’s Visit

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a notable display of diplomacy, the Knesset, Israel’s parliament, was illuminated in the colors of the Indian flag prior to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s arrival. This gesture serves as a tribute and symbolizes the progressively strengthened relationship between India and Israel. Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana shared an image on social media showcasing the parliament bathed in the Indian tricolour, coinciding with PM Modi’s two-day state visit beginning February 25. The illumination is perceived as both an honor for PM Modi and an indication of the deepening bilateral ties between the nations.

Aims of the Visit

This trip marks PM Modi’s second visit to Israel in nine years, aimed at further enhancing cooperation in defense and trade sectors. His previous visit in 2017 was pivotal in elevating India-Israel relations to the level of a strategic partnership. The forthcoming discussions are anticipated to elevate this framework into a special strategic partnership that will encourage collaborative efforts in defense technologies. Sources indicated that the visit formally acknowledges the reliability of both nations as partners during times of crisis.

Reception and Itinerary Highlights

Upon his arrival, PM Modi will be welcomed at the airport by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his spouse, Sara. The leaders are scheduled to have a private meeting before visiting Jerusalem. A significant aspect of the visit will be PM Modi’s address at the Knesset, which is a rare honor extended to select global leaders. In addition to this address, PM Modi plans to attend an exhibition showcasing Israeli technological innovations and meet notable business executives. Netanyahu is expected to host a private dinner in honor of the Indian Prime Minister.

Paying Homage at Yad Vashem

On February 26, PM Modi will pay his respects at the Yad Vashem memorial, commemorating the victims of the Holocaust, before holding discussions with Israeli President Isaac Herzog. Multiple memorandums of understanding are anticipated to be signed during the visit, particularly focusing on defense collaboration. A framework will be established as part of these agreements, aimed at opening new categories of defense cooperation.

Discussions on Advanced Defense Technologies

Local reports suggest that the discussions will include air defense systems, possibly incorporating Israel’s advanced laser-based air defense technology, Or Eitan. Beyond defense, agreements in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and cybersecurity are also expected. The Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi has stated that the visit will reaffirm the enduring strategic partnership between India and Israel, providing an opportunity to assess shared challenges while reorienting efforts towards a robust collaborative future between the two democracies.
