Ishwardas Maharaj Responds to Kirti Azad’s Criticism of Indian Team’s Hanuman Temple Visit with T20 World Cup Trophy

The CSR Journal Magazine

Mahant Ishwardas Maharaj of the Hanuman Temple in Ahmedabad addressed comments made by Trinamool Congress (TMC) Member of Parliament Kirti Azad regarding the Indian cricket team’s visit to the temple with the T20 World Cup trophy. In his statements, Maharaj explained that faith is a personal matter.

He remarked that those who comprehend this view it through a spiritual lens, while those who do not may question the practice. He emphasized, “This is our faith, our philosophy. But those who do not understand will question this.” Maharaj asserted that the Hanuman Temple has a history of over 100 years, positioning it as an important site for expressing belief.

Kirti Azad Voices Discontent on Social Media

The controversy began when Kirti Azad, a former cricketer and member of the 1983 Cricket World Cup winning team, publicly expressed his objections on social media regarding the team’s decision to bring the trophy to a Hanuman Temple. Azad argued that the trophy symbolizes all Indians and questioned the appropriateness of showcasing it at a temple, suggesting it should have been taken to places of worship such as a mosque, church, or gurdwara. He criticized the leadership of the cricket team, specifically skipper Suryakumar Yadav, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman Jay Shah, for the move.

Team India’s Historic Achievement

Team India recently made headlines by claiming their third T20 World Cup title, achieving the distinction of being the first team to defend the title while also winning it on home soil. They celebrated this milestone with a notable 96-run victory against New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Following their win, Yadav, Gambhir, and Shah visited the Hanuman Temple to seek blessings, bringing the trophy along as part of their celebration.

Azad Calls for Unity Among Religions

In his media interactions, Kirti Azad underscored the importance of unity within sports, stating that neither a sportsperson nor a sport should be associated with a specific religion or caste. He highlighted that 1.4 billion Indians, regardless of their faiths, celebrated Team India’s victory. Azad expressed his view that sports belong to everyone and should not be used to promote any singular viewpoint or identity. He emphasized, “Team India made India victorious. This is a matter of pride for the people of India.”

Emotions Run High on Social Media

Following the controversy, Azad took to social media platform X to voice his frustration. He invoked sentiments from the past, referencing the diverse religious makeup of the 1983 World Cup-winning team and expressed that the trophy represents the collective victory of all Indians. His remarks addressed the importance of recognizing the achievement as belonging to a diverse nation, not merely tied to specific individuals or beliefs. Azad’s comments have spurred discussion about the intersection of sports and religion in India, with varying perspectives emerging on the matter.
