Iran Embassy Deletes ‘Thank You India’ Post After Pakistan Backlash

The CSR Journal Magazine

A controversy has been triggered after the Iranian Embassy in India first posted and then deleted a social media post in which the Embassy thanked people of Kashmir and India for their support. The post was removed after receiving backlash from Pakistan.

Kashmiris collected cash and kind to help Iran in this difficult time, with gratitude, the embassy shared a message on X. The post mentioned a woman from Kashmir who donated her last gold she had preserved as memory of her husband who passed away 28 years back.

What was the deleted post?

The post included a video of the emotional woman who donated gold, captioned: A respected sister from Kashmir donated the gold kept as a memento of her husband, who passed away 28 years ago, with a heart full of love and solidarity for the people of Iran. Your tears and pure emotions are the greatest source of comfort for the people of Iran and will never be forgotten. Thank you, Kashmir. Thank you, India.”

Within no time, many Pakistani social media users started commenting on and reacting to the post. Many tagged the social handle ‘Iran in India’ and objected to referring to Kashmir as part of India. They even commented that Kashmir is under “illegal occupation”, some demanded the post be removed.  As the embassy started receiving backlash, it immediately deleted the post. After some time, it reshared the news of the donation but removed the mention of India. The embassy reposted the video, but this time without any mention of Kashmir or India. It simply read, “We will never forget your kindness.”

Iranian Embassy in India has opened a new account at the State Bank of India and has circulated the QR code on social media and locally to receive donations. Even though Iran is accepting the financial support from India, the recent episode of post deletion has created doubt about Iran and India’s relations.

What is the controversy surrounding the Iran Embassy post?

After the embassy removed and reshared the post, many social media users pointed out the double standards. Some users pointed out that countries like Iran engage economically with India but avoid taking clear positions on sensitive matters like Kashmir. While this controversy happened, other issues arose, such as the recent restriction imposed by Iran on the transit of India-bound fuel and gas shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.
