India’s 80th Independence Day Commemorated at Cardiff Castle

India’s 80th Independence Day was commemorated with a flag-raising ceremony at Cardiff Castle in Wales, emphasising the strong ties between Wales and India. The event occurred on August 15, attracting senior political leaders, community figures, armed forces representatives, and members of the Indian diaspora. Organised by Indian Honorary Consul General Raj Aggarwal, the occasion highlighted the enduring relationship shared by the two regions.

The historic Cardiff Castle was adorned in the colours of the Indian flag, with various flags displayed across the venue. Distinguished guests included South Glamorgan’s Lord Lieutenant Morfudd Meredith, UK Minister of State Kanishka Narayan MP, and Cardiff’s Lord Mayor Michael Michael, alongside Welsh Government Cabinet Minister Dr Dafydd Trystan Davies.

Furthermore, Council Leader Chris Weaver, alongside other senior members of the Senedd, and representatives from the armed forces attended the event, showcasing a unified commitment to celebrating cultural diversity within the region.

Cultural Performances and Speeches

The celebrations commenced with the Shree Swaminarayan Temple Youth Band welcoming attendees with traditional live music. Speeches were made, along with cultural performances designed to reflect Indian heritage and values. The flag-hoisting ceremony was led by Raj Aggarwal and several dignitaries, marking the significance of the day.

Attendees were also treated to a rendition of the Indian National Anthem by the Rekha Natya Academy and patriotic songs performed by vocalist Atreyee Saha. The event added depth by highlighting this year’s theme, Viksit Bharat 2047, which focuses on India’s economic development, social progress, and overall wellness.

A message from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, delivered during the ceremony, underscored the achievements of the Indian diaspora globally, reinforcing the importance of their contributions.

Acknowledgment of the Indian Diaspora’s Contributions

During the event, Aggarwal remarked on the thriving Indian diaspora in Wales, emphasising their successful integration and significant contributions to local prosperity. He expressed that their achievements demonstrate both their commitment to their heritage and their dedication to their new community.

The celebrations included appearances from notable figures in the pageantry and charitable sectors, such as Miss Universe Great Britain Angela Aumonier and other local titleholders. They highlighted ongoing charitable projects in India and announced plans to return in September for the 10th anniversary of the Chhanv Foundation, which aids acid attack survivors.

The guests are also set to visit Wildlife SOS in India to support initiatives focused on rescuing abused animals, including elephants and dancing bears. In addition, Aggarwal announced plans for a new £5 million wellness centre, Ty Krishna, expected to open in Cardiff Bay by 2027, further enhancing the community’s health resources.

The event concluded with warm wishes from President Droupadi Murmu and the Indian High Commission in London, sending their best to the people of Wales. Overall, the celebration successfully united the Indian diaspora and Welsh communities, fostering a shared appreciation of their intertwined histories, cultural heritage, and mutual aspirations.
