A 28-year-old man has been apprehended by police after allegedly stealing five bikes in Raigarh, Chhattisgarh. The individual, identified as Nirmal Dhakad from Morar in Gwalior district, reportedly resorted to theft after exhausting his funds during a visit to meet his girlfriend. Law enforcement utilised CCTV footage to link him to multiple theft incidents, leading to his arrest.

Dhakad was caught after Kotwali police intensified their investigation into a series of bike thefts in the area. Following the collection of CCTV imagery from various locations, officers established a connection between five separate cases involving the same suspect. On September 24, a tip-off reported a young man trying to steal a motorcycle near a Gaushala (cow shelter), prompting immediate police attention.

Investigation Leads to Suspect’s Identification

During their investigation, officers showed locals a photograph of the suspect, leading to his identification as the individual who had fled the scene after tampering with a motorcycle. This identification enabled the police to initiate a search for Dhakad, who was later spotted in the Police Colony area near a wireless set. Police pursued him and successfully apprehended him after a brief chase.

Upon questioning, Dhakad admitted to travelling to Raigarh from Gwalior on September 12 to visit a female friend. He informed the police that he ran out of money shortly after arriving in the city. Allegedly, to cover his expenses, he began targeting motorcycles and scooters that had their keys left in the ignition. Sources confirmed that once Dhakad stole a vehicle, he would ride it until it ran out of fuel. Following this, he would abandon the vehicle and seek out another one to steal.

Recovery of Stolen Vehicles

Based on Dhakad’s confessions, police successfully recovered five two-wheelers, comprising four motorcycles and one scooter, collectively valued at approximately Rs 2.50 lakh. The recovery has enabled police to resolve five vehicle theft cases recorded at the Kotwali police station.

Following the completion of judicial procedures, Dhakad was presented before the court and subsequently remanded to prison. SSP Shashi Mohan Singh reported that police received crucial information from an informant regarding Dhakad’s suspicious behaviour. He highlighted how officers were quick to respond to the tip-off, which ultimately led to the suspect’s arrest.

According to the SSP, Dhakad’s method involved abandoning stolen motorcycles once they ran out of fuel, which reflected a pattern in his criminal activity. The case serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges law enforcement faces in tackling vehicle thefts in urban areas. Authorities continue to encourage community vigilance and cooperation with local police to curb such criminal activities.
