Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy has renewed his demand for statehood for the Union Territory as assembly elections approach in April. During an assembly session, Rangasamy addressed comments made by opposition DMK leaders R Siva and AMH Nazeem, who emphasized the need for persistent efforts in advocating for statehood.
Current Status as a Hindrance to Governance
Since the incorporation of former French territories into India in 1962, Puducherry has maintained its status as a Union Territory. Rangasamy pointed out the limitations imposed on the elected government’s decision-making capabilities due to this status. Key administrative powers are conferred upon the lieutenant governor, a central government appointee, rather than the elected chief minister, which curtails local governance.
Rangasamy stated that the restrictive powers associated with Puducherry’s Union Territory classification have significantly hampered the elected government’s ability to make prompt decisions and execute programs effectively. He mentioned the All India NR Congress would be in favor of the statehood agenda if there is broad consensus among all political factions and legislators.
Reflection on Legislative Achievements
Despite the constraints related to governance under the current framework, Rangasamy expressed pride in the development attained over the past five years. He acknowledged that the assembly session was the concluding meeting of the legislative term and expressed satisfaction with the administration’s efforts to meet public aspirations, attributing success to cooperation among various stakeholders.
DMK’s Support for Statehood
Leaders from the opposition, R Siva and AMH Nazeem, have echoed support for the statehood demand. They conveyed the DMK’s commitment to pursuing this goal vigorously, even suggesting the possibility of boycotting the upcoming assembly elections if deemed necessary, underlining the importance of statehood for the welfare of the populace.
At the conclusion of the discussion, Speaker R Selvam adjourned the House sine die, marking the end of this legislative session.
