Germany and Russia held an unusual ministerial meeting on September 26, 2026, during the UN General Assembly, marking the first in-person encounter since Russia’s extensive invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The discussion occurred against a backdrop of escalating tensions between the European Union and Russia, as well as just before Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s address to global leaders.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul allegedly urged Russia to reconsider its “dangerous path of escalation” that he claimed threatened Germany, Europe, and the NATO alliance, according to a German delegation official. Wadephul reportedly expressed a willingness to improve relations but indicated that such progress would depend on Russia’s leadership showing a genuine commitment to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Relations between Berlin and Moscow have deteriorated in recent weeks, particularly following an alleged drone attack at Leipzig airport last month, which Germany has attributed to Russia. This incident triggered reciprocal actions between the two nations.

Duration and Context of the Meeting

The meeting lasted approximately 20 minutes and was held in a room provided by the Russian delegation. It concluded with both foreign ministers shaking hands, a gesture interpreted as a significant yet cautious diplomatic engagement. Following this encounter, Lavrov spoke at the General Assembly, where he defended Russia’s actions in Ukraine while simultaneously criticising Western countries, including Germany.

In his address, Lavrov dismissed proposals for Germany and Japan to obtain permanent seats on the UN Security Council, a move long supported by the United States, alongside backing for India. He accused Western nations of attempting to maintain their privileges and imposing their regulations on others.

It emphasized the emergence of a more balanced global power structure. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova mentioned via her Telegram channel that numerous diplomats had approached Lavrov to express gratitude towards Russia, illustrating potential support for Moscow within diplomatic circles.

Continued Hostilities in Ukraine

As the war progresses, intense fighting continues along the front lines, which have remained mostly unchanged since last year. Russia has reportedly increased its attacks on Ukraine, employing a range of weaponry including cruise missiles, glide bombs, and drones. Simultaneously, Ukraine has targeted Russian oil facilities and enterprises with long-range drone strikes.

Reports indicate that on September 23, 2026, four individuals were killed in Russian assaults, while Russian authorities claimed that three casualties resulted from a Ukrainian drone attack. Since the conflict’s inception, which Russia refers to as a “special military operation” to ensure its security and protect Russian-speaking individuals, Western analysts estimate that over 500,000 Russian and Ukrainian military personnel have sustained casualties, though neither side has publicly confirmed its own death toll.

The ongoing war has had far-reaching consequences, disrupting global supplies of fuel, fertiliser, and grain, while further intensifying divisions between Russia and Western nations. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reiterated calls on social media for international partners to persist in limiting Russia’s revenue streams and hindering its military initiatives, stressing that Russia’s aggressions escalate daily.

In a recent development, the United States Congress passed a stringent sanctions bill targeting Moscow, which President Donald Trump signed into law, although the measures have yet to be implemented. Discussions regarding potential three-way technical talks between the US, Ukraine, and Russia have also emerged, with Kyiv awaiting a suggested date from Washington.
