COWBERRY Aims to Transform India’s Organic Food Market Through Verification

The CSR Journal Magazine

India’s organic food market is experiencing significant growth as consumers become increasingly conscious of the quality of their food products. The burgeoning demand has led to questions regarding the authenticity of items marketed as organic. Historically, the industry relied heavily on claims made by brands, creating a gap in trust between consumers and producers.

The need for assured organic product verification has prompted a movement in the sector, with stakeholders questioning whether the products being sold genuinely meet organic standards. The industry’s evolution calls for a framework that ensures both farmers and consumers are adequately supported and informed.

COWBERRY’s Founders and Initiatives

An initiative titled COWBERRY emerged in April 2023, focusing on transforming the organic food industry. Founded by Haresh Parvadiya, Darshan Parvadiya, and Kaushik Sonani, this venture aims to establish trust through measurable proof rather than mere promises. Each founder brings distinct expertise to the project, with Haresh Parvadiya embracing a legacy of agriculture alongside his business acumen.

Darshan Parvadiya, who returned from the United States, recognised the potential of organic farming upon hearing farmers’ challenges. Kaushik Sonani, an alumnus of IIM, has provided strategic oversight to the company. Together, they have identified that the primary issue within the organic sector lies in building trust among consumers, rather than in supply.

Following the inception of COWBERRY, the founders travelled to Gujarat and various other states to engage with farmers. Their discussions revealed several hurdles that farmers face when transitioning to organic methods, including high certification costs and inadequate technical support. This realisation led to their mission to offer support for farmers while also delivering proof of organic integrity to consumers.

Supporting Farmers and Enhancing Transparency

COWBERRY has initiated measures to ensure fair pricing and transparency for farmers involved in organic agriculture. The company’s strategy includes providing support throughout the organic conversion process, which encompasses agronomy guidance and an assured market for produce. This support addresses the financial concerns of farmers, allowing them to focus on sustainable practices while securing their livelihoods.

In parallel, COWBERRY aims to enhance consumer trust through transparent product packaging. The company asserts that each batch of products undergoes rigorous testing for over 252 banned chemicals in accredited laboratories. Consumers can verify the authenticity of each product by scanning a QR code that links them to the corresponding lab report, thus fostering a sense of confidence in what they are purchasing.

With a broad product catalogue that spans over 25 categories and 150 stock-keeping units, COWBERRY responds to the diverse needs of the market while promoting traceability. This model not only emphasizes the verification of products but also establishes an accountability framework designed to regain consumer trust in organic offerings.

Establishing a New Paradigm in Organic Food

COWBERRY positions itself as an integral part of the organic food ecosystem, striving to create a comprehensive structure that melds farmer support, certification, and consumer education into a cohesive model. This initiative presents a potential shift in how organic products are marketed and perceived within India.

By focusing on evidence and traceability, COWBERRY aims to redefine the industry, moving beyond traditional claims of “chemical-free” or “natural” products. The founders envision a future where every claim made by organic brands can be substantiated through verified data.

The company’s vision, which began with a small team in April 2023, is making strides towards becoming a leader in the organic sector. As COWBERRY advances its mission, it seeks not only to prove the legitimacy of organic claims but also to create a lasting impact on both farmers and consumers in India’s organic food market.
