Canadian PM Mark Carney Arrives in Mumbai to Boost India Trade Ties

The CSR Journal Magazine

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, accompanied by his wife Diana Fox Carney, arrived in Mumbai on February 27, starting his first official tour of India. At the airport, they were greeted by Jaykumar Rawal, the Maharashtra Minister of Protocol and Marketing. Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, noted that this visit marks a pivotal moment in enhancing India-Canada relations. He shared a warm welcome message on X, acknowledging the significance of Carney’s arrival in Mumbai as a step towards strengthening diplomatic ties between the two nations.

Significance of the Visit

This trip is notable as it is the first by a Canadian prime minister since the previous government led by Justin Trudeau, which experienced challenges in bilateral relations. The current visit represents a renewed commitment to deepen cooperation and find mutual interests. A press release from the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office indicated that Carney plans to meet with key corporate leaders in Mumbai. Following these discussions, he will proceed to New Delhi on March 2nd for important dialogues with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Focus on Expanding Bilateral Relations

During the meetings, the two leaders will aim to enhance the Canada-India partnership with ambitious new initiatives in various sectors, including trade, energy, technology, artificial intelligence, culture, and defense. PM Carney is also scheduled to engage with business leaders to explore investment prospects in Canada and foster collaboration between enterprises in both countries. Additionally, while in the capital, he will join the India-Canada CEOs’ Forum.

Trade and Investment Potential

India is recognized as a rapidly growing global leader in technology and commerce, and in 2024, it ranked as Canada’s seventh-largest trading partner, with bilateral trade amounting to $30.8 billion. During the G20 Summit in Johannesburg last November, PM Modi and PM Carney discussed the goal of achieving $50 billion in bilateral trade by 2030. Modi highlighted the increasing interest from Canadian pension funds in Indian companies, reflecting strong potential for expanding trade and investment links between the two nations.

Recent Diplomatic Interactions

The diplomatic engagement is bolstered by a recent meeting between Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand and India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar at the Munich Security Conference in Germany. According to a Canadian government release, this marks the fifth discussion between the ministers since September 2025, illustrating the growing dynamism in Canada-India relations, which have a history spanning over 75 years of diplomatic interactions and strong people-to-people connections. They discussed enhancing cooperation in sectors such as energy, technology, and trade.

Commitment to Future Cooperation

Minister Anand emphasized the importance of the partnership with India due to its status as an evolving global economic force. Both ministers affirmed the technological benefits and significant partnership opportunities that lie ahead for businesses and industries in their respective countries. The ongoing discussions underscore the shared commitment to advancing trade and ensuring economic stability and resilience through collaborative efforts.
