Bangladesh Tribunal Issues Show Cause Notice To Hasina and Aide

Sheikh Hasina

Bangladesh’s International Crime Tribunal (ICT)  has issued a show cause notice to the country’s deposed Prime Minister, Sheikh Haseena and her aide, Shakil Alam Bulbul, in a contempt of court case. Headed by Justice Golam Mortuza Mozumdar, the tribunal passed an order on Wednesday based on the content of an audio of ex PM Haseena. It is through this audio that Hasina interfered in the judicial process and issued threats to the tribunal, as reported by the state-run BSS News agency.

The tribunal has now instructed Haseena and Shakil Alam Bulbul, the leader of the band Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student wing of Awami League, to respond to the show cause notice by May 15.

The investigation agency conducted forensic tests and confirmed that the voice belongs to Sheikh Haseena,” the ICT prosecutor said.

Bangladesh’s Stand

The current Mohammad Yunus-led interim government in Bangladesh has issued several warrants against the former PM, her family members and the Awami League supporters after coming to power in August last year. A tribunal of Bangladesh issued an arrest warrant last month against Haseena and four others, including former Inspector General of police (IGP) Bennazir Ahmed, for their involvement in the alleged mass killing at Shapla Chattar in Dhaka in 2013.

India’s relations with Bangladesh are also under strain because the former Prime Minister is currently stationed in India, while the government of Bangladesh has many times urged for the extradition of Sheikh Hasina back to Bangladesh.

Fourth Nuclear Talk Between Iran and US Postponed

Iran-US

The fourth round of talks between the United States and Iran has been postponed. Scheduled in Rome for Saturday, the new date for the nuclear talks will be set, ‘depending on the US approach’, according to the Iranian official’s statement to international media.

The country of Oman has mediated the earlier sessions of the US-Iran talks and says that this round of nuclear discussions was rescheduled for “logistical reasons”. However, international media also reportedly said in this matter that the United States has yet to confirm its participation in the fourth round of talks in Rome.

Nuclear Talks

Earlier on Thursday, Iran accused the US of “contradictory behaviour and provocative statements” after Washington warned Tehran of consequences for backing Yemen’s Houthis. The US also imposed new oil sanctions on the country amidst these nuclear talks. Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said on Monday that Tehran would continue to engage “seriously and resolutely” in result-oriented negotiations with the United States, as reported by the country’s national media.

The nuclear talks between Iran and the US that were provisionally scheduled for May 3, according to Oman, and seek to limit Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of some of the crushing economic sanctions imposed by the US on the Islamic Republic of Iran. These talks are said to cure a half-century of enmity between the two nation states. These negotiations have been led by the Iranian foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi and the US Mideast envoy, Steve Midkoff.

The US sanctions on Iran during the nuclear talks are not seemingly helping the resolution of nuclear disputes between the two nation-states through diplomacy. It now falls in the hands of the US to decide on the next round of talks.

India’s First Deepwater Transshipment Port Opens in Kerala, Paving the Way for Maritime Self-Reliance

India took a leading step in maritime development by enabling Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate the Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala which establishes vital trade connections and logistics sovereignty for the nation.

The port holds its position near critical international seaway routes in the Arabian Sea at ten nautical miles distance while its development took shape through public-private cooperation at Rs 8,900 crore. Vizhinjam International Seaport receives project management from Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) through a partnership with Kerala Government together with central government support.

The Vizhinjam port operates as an essential gateway solution for India’s maritime framework due to its potential to receive “mother vessels” containing 20,000 containers. Almost seventy percent of India’s transshipment cargo processing depended on three overseas ports: Colombo, Singapore, and Jebel Ali until this moment. The dependence on overseas ports resulted in dual expenses for Indian business operations through additional container charges of $80 to $100 and annual financial losses ranging between $200 million and $220 million.

Vizhinjam’s Natural Depth Cuts Costs, Boosts Efficiency

A key advantage of the port lies in its geography. The seabed depth reaches 18–20 meters within a kilometer of the shore, enabling direct berthing for the world’s largest ships without the need for dredging—a costly and ecologically disruptive process that most Indian ports require. Moreover, the coastline around Vizhinjam is uniquely stable, with very low sand movement, meaning ongoing maintenance costs will be significantly lower.

In terms of ownership, the Kerala government holds a 61.5% majority stake, Adani Ports controls 28.9%, and the Union government owns 9.6%. This partnership structure aims to combine private sector efficiency with public sector oversight.

Earlier this year, the port handled MSC Türkiye, one of the largest container vessels in the world with a capacity of more than 24,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units). It was the first Indian port ever to dock a ship of that size, demonstrating Vizhinjam’s readiness for large-scale operations.

Vizhinjam Equips to Hold 1 Million Containers

Currently equipped to handle 1 million containers per annum, the port’s infrastructure is planned to expand across two more development phases, adding capacity for another 6.4 million TEUs. Once fully operational, this facility is expected to significantly reduce India’s dependence on foreign ports, lower freight costs, and boost overall shipping efficiency.

The on-ground infrastructure further strengthens its viability as a logistics hub. The port is located just 2 km from a national highway, 12 km from a major railway line, and 15 km from the Trivandrum International Airport—ensuring seamless multi-modal cargo movement across the country.

The Prime Minister’s Office highlighted that the project is part of the broaderViksit Bharatvision, which emphasizes infrastructure modernization to position India as a self-reliant and globally competitive economy. Vizhinjam is seen as a core pillar of India’s maritime development plan and a model for future port projects.

India to Construct Other Deepwater Ports

In addition to Vizhinjam, India is moving ahead with the construction of other deepwater ports to support growing trade demands. Work began on the Vadhvan port in Maharashtra’s Palghar district in August 2024, and another major transshipment hub is proposed on Great Nicobar Island, currently awaiting regulatory approvals.

India has 13 major ports and over 200 non-major ports. While existing container ports like Mundra and Jawaharlal Nehru Port handle over 7 million TEUs annually, Vizhinjam is set apart as India’s only dedicated deepwater transshipment terminal with direct access to global shipping routes.

By cutting reliance on foreign transshipment points and offering cost-effective, large-scale container handling, Vizhinjam is expected to anchor India’s emergence as a critical player in global maritime trade.

US Approves Military Equipment Sale to India Worth $131 Million

India US relations

In a significant move underscoring the deepening defence ties between Washington and New Delhi, the United States has approved the supply of military hardware and logistical support assets valued at $131 million to India. This development comes at a time of heightened tensions in South Asia, notably following the recent Pahalgam terror attack, and reflects the ongoing strategic partnership between the two democracies.

The Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), operating under the Pentagon, has issued the necessary certification for the military supplies and formally notified the US Congress of the proposed sale. The approval, delivered under the “foreign military sale” route, is closely linked to the ongoing cooperation between India and the US within the framework of the Indo-Pacific Maritime Domain Awareness programme.

Strategic Boost to India’s Maritime Surveillance Capabilities

According to an official readout from the US government, the State Department has determined to approve a potential foreign military sale to India, encompassing Indo-Pacific Maritime Domain Awareness and associated equipment. The package includes advanced “sea-vision” software, remote software, analytic support, and access to related documentation and logistical elements. These assets are expected to significantly enhance India’s maritime domain awareness, analytical capabilities, and strategic posture, enabling New Delhi to better address current and emerging threats in the region.

The principal contractor for the supply is Hawkeye 360, a Virginia-based company specialising in space-based radio frequency data analytics. The US government has emphasised that the proposed sale will not disrupt the basic military balance in the region nor adversely impact US defence readiness.

This latest approval is part of a broader push by the Trump administration to encourage India to expand its military procurement from the United States. The DSCA has highlighted that such sales serve US national security and foreign policy interests by building the capacity of allied security forces to respond to shared challenges. The US readout further notes that the sale will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by strengthening the strategic relationship with India, a key partner for political stability, peace, and economic progress in the Indo-Pacific and South Asia.

Indian officials have yet to issue a formal response to the announcement, but the US government has expressed confidence that India will have no difficulty integrating these articles and services into its armed forces. The move is widely seen as a reaffirmation of the growing defence and strategic partnership between the two countries, particularly in the face of evolving regional security dynamics.

The approval also comes amid swirling reports and denials regarding arms supplies in the region, with Turkey recently rejecting claims that it had provided military equipment to Pakistan. Against this backdrop, the US-India military cooperation stands out as a stabilising factor in an increasingly complex security environment.

As the Indo-Pacific continues to emerge as a focal point for global strategic competition, the latest US decision to bolster India’s maritime surveillance and analytical capabilities is expected to further cement the two countries’ collaborative efforts to ensure peace and stability in the region.

Severe Storms Lash Delhi-NCR: 4 Dead, Over 100 Flights Delayed, IMD Issues Red Alert

The National Capital Region (NCR) and Delhi are battling with strong winds, heavy rain, and dust storms. The sudden change in climate has resulted in significant disruption to daily life. Severe rains have caused further tragic fatalities and widespread travel delays across the capital.

Furthermore, as a precautionary measure the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued alerts across the region, This comes as wind speeds reached up to 78 kmph in several parts of the capital.

Four Dead in Dwarka After Tree Falls on Room

Amid the heavy rains, a 26-year-old woman and her three children were killed in Delhi’s Dwarka. The incident occurred in the Dwarka area early Friday morning. This comes after a neem tree, uprooted by strong winds, collapsed onto their makeshift room on farmland.

According to reports, the victims were trapped under debris. Following the discovery they were rushed to RTR Hospital. However, upon arrival all four were declared dead. The woman’s husband sustained minor injuries. Emergency responders, including police and fire brigade teams, were involved in the rescue operation.

Flight Operations Severely Affected at Delhi Airport

In addition to the tragic casualties, heavy storms had a cascading effect on air travel. So far, over 100 flights have been delayed. More than 40 flights were diverted to cities with moderate weather conditions such as Ahmedabad and Jaipur.

Furthermore, airlines like Air India and IndiGo advised passengers to check flight statuses before heading to the airport. According to FlightRadar data, Delhi airport experienced average delays of 21 minutes for arrivals and 61 minutes for departures. All the airlines deployed ground staff to manage the disruption and assist travellers stuck in the delay.

Waterlogging and Traffic Chaos in Several Areas

Reports suggest heavy downpours led to waterlogging in key areas of the city. This includes Lajpat Nagar, Dwarka, Khanpur, RK Puram, Minto Road, and Majnu ka Tilla. The waterlogging has resulted in major traffic disruptions.

This has caused significant inconvenience to the daily commuters travelling during the morning rush hour. Amid the chaos Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited some of the affected regions to monitor the situation on ground.

IMD Issues Red and Orange Alerts

The India Meteorological Department Initially issued a red alert. However, it later downgraded the warning to orange as the heavy storms progressed westward. According to the IMD data the wind speeds peaked at 78 kmph in Pragati Maidan. Other areas like Lodhi Road, Pitampura, Najafgarh, and IGNOU also recorded gusts above 50 kmph. The weather department has urged residents to stay indoors, avoid travelling, and take precautions against falling trees and live wires.

IMD predicts rainfall

The IMD further predicted continued rainfall and thunderstorms in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Himachal Pradesh. Delhi recorded a temperature of 19.8°C amid the storm. However the rainfall brought temporary relief from the scorching summer heat.

Similar weather conditions were reported from other parts of India. Odisha faced severe thunderstorms and nor’wester winds (Kalbaisakhi), leading to damage at Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi’s residence.

Furthermore, lightning and gusty winds were forecast in parts of Chhattisgarh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and coastal Andhra Pradesh. The IMD warned of potential damage to huts, crops, and power lines and advised people to seek shelter in stable structures.

Hate Crime Probe Launched After Hindu Flags Torn Down at NY Home

According to a report from IndiaToday, authorities in New York are investigating an act of religious vandalism as a possible hate crime after a man trespassed onto the property of a Hindu family in Queens Village and tore down four religious flags used in their worship rituals. The incident, which occurred on April 20, only came to public attention after the NYPD sought help identifying the intruder.

How the Incident Took Place?

The individual entered the residence just before 3:00 PM, removed the Hindu flags from the front porch, and discarded them in a trash bin. Although no physical damage or violence was reported, the symbolic nature of the act has left the family distressed and raised broader concerns within the Hindu community.

The New York Police Department’s Hate Crimes Task Force is treating the case as criminal mischief with potential hate-based motives. The man, whose identity remains unknown, was captured on surveillance cameras. He is described as light-skinned, bald, and was last seen wearing sunglasses, a dark jacket, a light-colored coat, a multicolored shirt, a purple tie, and blue pants. He was also carrying a brown briefcase.

Residents of Queens Village, a quiet, middle-income neighborhood in eastern Queens, expressed shock at the incident, which marks another disturbing entry in the rise of faith-based discrimination incidents in the U.S. The religious flags, often displayed by Hindu families as part of daily devotional practices, were not just decorations—they represent sacred tradition and spiritual reverence.

Pictures of the Suspect has been Released by the New York Police Department

The NYPD has released images of the suspect and is urging anyone with knowledge of the man’s identity or the incident to step forward.

This act has reignited concerns among Indian-American leaders, who have for years raised the alarm over the growing trend of anti-Hindu sentiment in the United States. At a 2024 conference with Hindu community leaders, U.S. Congressman Shri Thanedar, a Democrat, remarked, “We are witnessing an increase in Hinduphobia,” and called for action to prevent further hate-driven acts against Hindu Americans.

As the investigation moves forward, the community awaits justice and increased protections for religious minorities in the city.

A very shocking incident has come to light from Karnataka’s Kolar district. A 21-year-old man identified as Karthik, died after consuming five bottles of liquor. The man allegedly drank all the liquor without water in a bet worth Rs 10,000.

The incident in question occurred in Kolar district. Karthik reportedly attempted the challenge in front of five friends. This included Venkata Reddy and Subramani, who dared him to complete the feat for the cash reward.

Critical Condition and Death in Hospital

According to reports, soon after downing the alcohol, Karthik became critically ill. Due to his worsening condition he was immediately rushed to a hospital in Mulbagal. Despite timely medical efforts, he died amid the treatment. Karthik had been reportedly married for a year. In addition, he had just welcomed a newborn eight days before his death.

Police Action Against Accused

A case was registered at Nangali police station in Karnataka following the incident. Soon the police arrested two individuals, the ones who started the bet, Venkata Reddy and Subramani. The Police are currently searching for the other four involved in the incident. All six involved in the alleged incident face severe charges related to abetment to death and negligence.

WHO: No Safe Level of Alcohol Consumption

According to the WHO, there is no “safe” level of alcohol consumption. “To identify a ‘safe’ level of alcohol consumption, valid scientific evidence would need to demonstrate that at and below a certain level, there is no risk of illness or injury associated with alcohol consumption.

The new WHO statement clarifies: currently available evidence cannot indicate the existence of a threshold at which the carcinogenic effects of alcohol ‘switch on’ and start to manifest in the human body. Moreover, there are no studies that would demonstrate that the potential beneficial effects of light and moderate drinking on cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes outweigh the cancer risk associated with these same levels of alcohol consumption for individual consumers,” a 2023 report says.

A Grim Reminder

This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of alcohol misuse and peer pressure. Authorities and health experts urge people to avoid risky behavior involving alcohol and highlight the need for increased awareness about its potential fatal consequences.

महंगाई के मामले में केसर ने सोने को किया ओवरटेक

Kesar Kashmir

Saffron
