Bangladesh ends silence after Pahalgam massacre and ‘Operation Sindoor’; Applauds ceasefire and US mediation

After weeks of conspicuous silence, Bangladesh on Saturday finally broke its diplomatic reserve in the wake of the horrific Pahalgam massacre and India’s retaliatory response—‘Operation Sindoor’, a coordinated missile strike that dismantled nine terrorist infrastructure sites across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

In a carefully worded social media statement, Muhammad Yunus, Chief Advisor to Bangladesh’s interim government, commended Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and extended appreciation to US President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio for their instrumental role in mediating the ceasefire.

What did Yunus say?

“I most sincerely commend Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi of India and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan for agreeing to a ceasefire with immediate effect and to engage in talks. I would also like to express my deep appreciation to President Trump and Secretary of State Rubio for their effective mediation. Bangladesh will continue to support our two neighbours to resolve differences through diplomacy,” Yunus posted on X.

Dhaka’s prior silence—especially in the aftermath of a terrorist atrocity that claimed 26 innocent lives and prompted India’s forceful reprisal—had become the subject of intense diplomatic and media scrutiny. Observers interpreted this calculated silence as a strategic attempt to avoid antagonising Pakistan, a country with which Bangladesh has been warming ties in the aftermath of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s ouster.

While world powers including the United States, China, and key European capitals issued strong appeals for de-escalation, and Islamabad rattled with veiled threats of retaliation, Bangladesh’s absence from the global diplomatic discourse stood out starkly. The studied neutrality raised eyebrows, especially given Bangladesh’s historical stance against terrorism.

Yunus’s statement more a gesture of diplomatic relief?

Foreign policy analysts argue that Yunus’s belated statement was more a gesture of diplomatic relief than a firm stand for justice. By focusing on the ceasefire rather than explicitly condemning the massacre or supporting India’s counterterrorism operation, Dhaka appeared to many as bending towards appeasement of Islamabad rather than aligning with regional efforts to combat terrorism.

In contrast, other South Asian nations responded with greater urgency and clarity. Sri Lanka and the Maldives voiced deep concern over the emerging threat to regional peace, while Nepal struck a neutral but timely tone, urging both sides to exercise restraint and open dialogue. Dhaka’s evasive posture, meanwhile, was widely perceived as an attempt to walk a fine line—avoiding open endorsement of India’s actions without straining ties with Pakistan.

What perplexed many was the uncharacteristic restraint of Yunus himself. As a Nobel Peace Prize laureate renowned for his humanitarian advocacy, his reluctance to directly denounce a terror strike or acknowledge India’s military response stood in stark contrast to his global image. This silence, many argue, was not incidental but tactically engineered.

Why was Yunus silent?

Political commentators within Bangladesh believe the interim government’s stance is deeply rooted in domestic political realities. With anti-India rhetoric often wielded by factions within Jamaat-e-Islami and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), overt alignment with India could prove politically combustible. In such a fragile political ecosystem, Yunus’s carefully measured silence was likely an attempt to maintain internal stability—even at the cost of drawing international criticism.

In the end, Dhaka’s hesitant diplomacy underscores the complex interplay of geopolitics and domestic compulsions—a balancing act between regional loyalties, international expectations, and internal vulnerabilities.

End of an Era: Virat Kohli Announces Retirement from Test Cricket

Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli, one of India’s most celebrated cricketers, has announced his retirement from Test cricket with immediate effect, drawing the curtains on a remarkable 14-year journey in the longest format of the game. The announcement came as a surprise to fans and experts alike, just a month before India’s much-anticipated Test series against England. Kohli, aged 36, made his decision public through a heartfelt social media post, expressing gratitude for the lessons and memories that Test cricket has given him.

Kohli’s Test Career

Kohli’s Test career began on 20 June 2011 against the West Indies in Kingston. Over the years, he established himself as a pillar of India’s batting line-up and went on to become one of the most successful Test captains in Indian cricket history. In his 123 Test matches, Kohli amassed 9,230 runs at an average of 46.8, including 30 centuries and 31 fifties, making him India’s fourth-highest run-scorer in Tests, behind only Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Sunil Gavaskar.

Kohli’s leadership was marked by intensity, fitness, and an unyielding drive to win. He led India to many historic victories, including a memorable series win in Australia and a place in the final of the inaugural World Test Championship in 2021. His batting prowess was at its peak during the previous decade, where he scored 7,202 runs at an average of nearly 55, with 27 centuries between 2010 and 2019.

However, the last few years have seen a dip in his red-ball form. Since 2020, Kohli managed only 2,028 runs in 68 innings at an average of 30.72-his lowest among Test batters with at least 2,000 runs in that period. Despite this, his contributions and fighting spirit remained unquestioned, and his presence in the dressing room was a source of inspiration for many young cricketers.

The timing of Kohli’s retirement has raised questions, coming just after Rohit Sharma’s departure from the format and before the England series. Reports suggest that Kohli wanted to give selectors enough time to plan for the future, as India’s Test squad is now set to be led by a younger generation, with players like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill expected to take on bigger roles. With stalwarts like Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara also out of the mix, Ravindra Jadeja is likely to be the most experienced player in the upcoming squad.

Kohli’s Farewell Message

In his farewell message, Kohli wrote, “It’s been 14 years since I first wore the baggy blue in Test cricket. Honestly, I never imagined the journey this format would take me on. It’s tested me, shaped me, and taught me lessons I’ll carry for life. There’s something deeply personal about playing in whites. The quiet grind, the long days, the small moments that no one sees but that stay with you forever. As I step away from this format, it’s not easy – but it feels right. I’ve given it everything I had, and it’s given me back so much more than I could’ve hoped for. I’m walking away with a heart full of gratitude – for the game, for the people I shared the field with, and for every single person who made me feel seen along the way. I’ll always look back at my Test career with a smile. #269, signing off”.

Kohli’s last Test appearance was during the 2024–25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, where he scored a century in Perth but found runs hard to come by in the remaining matches. With his retirement from both T20Is and Tests, Kohli’s focus now shifts solely to ODI cricket, with the 2027 World Cup in South Africa at the top of his agenda.

Tributes have poured in from across the cricketing world. Former players, commentators, and fans have all acknowledged the void Kohli leaves behind. His IPL franchise, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, remarked, “Test Cricket won’t be the same”. Legendary commentator Harsha Bhogle and former England captain Kevin Pietersen also expressed their admiration and surprise at the timing of the decision.

Kohli’s Most Memorable Test innings

Virat Kohli’s Test career is studded with many unforgettable innings that defined not just his legacy but also the fortunes of Indian cricket. Across 123 Tests, Kohli produced several knocks that showcased his technical brilliance, mental toughness, and ability to perform under pressure, both at home and in challenging overseas conditions.

One of his earliest and most significant innings came during India’s 2013 tour of South Africa. In Johannesburg, Kohli scored 119 in the first innings and followed it up with a composed 96 in the second. Facing a formidable pace attack featuring Dale Steyn, Vernon Philander, and Morne Morkel on a lively pitch, Kohli’s technique and temperament shone through, announcing his arrival as a reliable Test batsman in tough overseas conditions.

Kohli’s twin centuries in Adelaide in 2014 are widely remembered. In his first Test as captain, he scored 115 in the first innings and an audacious 141 in the second while chasing a steep target of 364. Despite India’s narrow defeat, Kohli’s aggressive approach and fearless strokeplay set the tone for his captaincy, earning admiration for his intent to chase victory rather than settle for a draw.

Another iconic knock came at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai in 2016, where Kohli scored a monumental 235 against England. Batting for nearly nine hours on a pitch assisting spinners, he anchored India’s mammoth total and helped secure an innings victory. This innings was a testament to his stamina, concentration, and mastery against both pace and spin.

Kohli’s 149 at Edgbaston in 2018 stands out as one of his finest overseas performances. After a disappointing tour of England in 2014, Kohli silenced critics by almost single-handedly keeping India in the game against a high-quality English attack led by James Anderson and Stuart Broad. His innings, filled with grit and determination, is often hailed as one of the greatest centuries by an Indian in England.

In the same year, Kohli produced a gritty 153 at Centurion against South Africa. On a testing pitch with variable bounce, he was the lone warrior for India, compiling more than half of the team’s total. His ability to stand tall while wickets tumbled at the other end highlighted his resilience and technical prowess in challenging conditions.

Kohli’s highest individual Test score came in Pune in 2019, where he remained unbeaten on 254 against South Africa. This innings was a masterclass in control and shot selection, as he dismantled a strong bowling attack and helped India to a dominant victory. It also marked his seventh double century in Tests, underlining his appetite for big scores.

Other memorable knocks include his 169 at Melbourne in 2014, where he took on Mitchell Johnson and the Australian attack with courage and skill, and his 104* against Sri Lanka at Kolkata in 2017, where he rescued India from a precarious position on a green, seaming pitch.

These innings not only contributed to India’s successes but also cemented Kohli’s reputation as one of the modern greats of Test cricket, capable of delivering under the toughest circumstances and against the best bowling attacks in the world.

Virat Kohli’s retirement from Test cricket marks the end of an era for Indian cricket. His passion, aggression, and commitment have set new benchmarks for future generations. As the nation bids farewell to its modern-day great in whites, the memories of his iconic knocks and inspirational leadership will remain etched in the hearts of cricket lovers forever.

Why was Vikram Misri trolled? Support pours in for India’s Foreign Secretary

In a shocking development, India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri faced severe trolling on social media after he announced the news of India and Pakistan agreeing to a ceasefire of military operations on May 10.

So much hatred and negativity started pouring in that his X (formerly Twitter) account had to be set on protected mode the following day (May 11) in order to disable public comments on his posts or even allow netizens to view his latest posts.

Why Vikram Misri was trolled?

Following the past few weeks of escalating tension between India and Pakistan, Vikram Misri announced the news of the two countries agreeing to a ceasefire on the evening of May 10. In his social media post, the Foreign Secretary said that the director general of military operations from both countries had spoken over a call on Saturday afternoon, and the next round of talks would take place at 12 noon on Monday.

This did not go down well with a section of netizens who expected India would retaliate to Pakistan’s repeated missile and drone attacks with a war. The warmongers poured hatred not only for Misri but also for his daughter, who lives in London and works at the global law firm Herbert Smith Freehills.

Prominent personalities, including politicians and former diplomats came out in support of Misri, condemning the personal attacks targeted not just at him but also at his family. The Ministry of External Affairs has not yet shared an official statement on the matter.

Support pours in for Vikram Misri after trolling

In response to the barrage of trolling, the IAS Association came out in solidarity with the senior diplomat to protest against the “unwarranted personal attacks” targeting him. The Indian Administrative Service (IAS) Association posted on X that it stands in solidarity with Misri and his family.

“Unwarranted personal attacks on civil servants performing their duties with integrity are deeply regrettable. We reaffirm our commitment to uphold the dignity of public service,” the Association posted on X.

“Unequivocally condemn the deplorable personal attacks against Foreign Secretary Shri Vikram Misri and his family. Such unwarranted assaults on civil servants committed to their duties are absolutely intolerable,” the Indian Police Service (IPS) Association mentioned on X.

“The IRTS Association strongly condemns unwarranted abuse and personal attacks against Foreign Secretary Shri Vikram Misri and his family. We urge everyone to maintain respect and decorum, acknowledging his dedicated service and significant contributions towards the nation,” read an X post by the Indian Railway Traffic Service Association.

Misri has done an outstanding job: Shashi Tharoor

“I think young Vikram Misri has done an outstanding job. He has worked very hard, very long hours, and is an extremely hardworking and effective voice for India. I can’t understand who on earth would troll and why? What could they be critical of, and what could these people have done differently or better?” Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said in an interview, praising the Foreign Secretary’s commitment and professionalism.

Unnaceptable: Sachin Pilot

“It’s unacceptable to target our professional diplomats and civil servants — those who work dedicatedly to serve the nation,” Congress leader Sachin Pilot wrote on X.

Civil Servants shouldn’t be blamed for decisions taken by political leadership: Owaisi

AIMIM chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi said, “Mr Vikram Misri is a decent, honest, hard-working diplomat working tirelessly for our nation. Our civil servants work under the executive this must be remembered & they shouldn’t be blamed for the decisions taken by the executive or any political leadership running Watan E Aziz.”

Government’s responsibility to make decisions: Akhilesh Yadav

“It is the government’s responsibility to make decisions – not individual officers. Some anti-social criminal elements are openly crossing all limits of abusive language against the officer and his family, but neither the BJP government nor any of its ministers are coming forward to protect his honour and respect or discussing possible action against those who make such unwanted posts,” Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav wrote on X.

Others who supported Misri

“Now they are going after Vikram Misri, as if he alone decided on a unilateral ceasefire, not Modi, Shah, Rajnath or Jaishankar,” the Kerala Congress party posted on X.

Former Ambassador to the UAE Navdeep Suri posted on X, “Trolls targeting Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and his family – it is disgraceful. He is professional, composed and clear-spoken.”

Foreign policy analyst Indrani Bagchi said, “Misri is a respected diplomat leading the Foreign Ministry. Trolling his family just because you were playing a fictional India-Pakistan video game in your head is not just vile – it reflects a mindset this country can do without.”

Veteran journalist Vir Sanghvi wrote, “Those trolling Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, who has done an outstanding job during this crisis, are human garbage.”

Who is Vikram Misri?

Vikram Misri took charge as India’s Foreign Secretary on July 15, 2024. A 1989 batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, he has held several diplomatic assignments in Europe, Asia and North America.

He has worked on the Pakistan desk at the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and served on the teams of former External Affairs Ministers I.K. Gujral and Pranab Mukherjee. Misri has also been a joint secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office and served as private secretary to three prime ministers – I.K. Gujral, Manmohan Singh and Narendra Modi.

Born in Srinagar, Misri holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Hindu College, Delhi University and an MBA from XLRI, Jamshedpur. Before joining the civil services, he worked in advertising and film production.

India Resumes Flight Operations at 32 Airports After De-escalation with Pakistan, All You Need to Know About the List

Following a noticeable reduction in cross-border hostilities, India has reopened 32 airports across the northern and western regions of the country that were temporarily closed due to heightened tensions with Pakistan. The decision, announced on Monday, came three days after the closure was extended and just hours after both nations agreed to halt all military action across land, air, and sea.

Among the airports that resumed civil aviation services are Srinagar, Amritsar, Jammu, Leh, Chandigarh, and Ambala. These facilities were part of a broader shutdown that initially impacted airfields near the Indo-Pak border and major Indian Air Force (IAF) bases. According to the Airports Authority of India (AAI), NOTAMs (Notices to Airmen) were issued for all 32 affected airports, making them operational for civilian flights again.

The closures had initially been announced following India’s precision airstrikes on terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on May 7 under Operation Sindoor, a retaliatory campaign against the April 22 terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam region. The airstrikes targetted nine specific locations identified as militant hubs, prompting Pakistan to respond with large-scale missile and drone attacks, particularly aimed at military installations in northern and western India.

Flight Ban Lifted After Extension

Although the original flight restrictions were set to pass on the morning of May 11, escalated threats led authorities to extend the ban on civil aircraft operations until May 15. As tensions have since cooled, airspace and airport access are now being restored progressively.

In a separate NOTAM, Indian aviation authorities also reopened 25 key flight routes that had been suspended due to safety concerns. These include air corridors over the Mumbai Flight Information Region and international air routes that were redirected during the conflict. However, despite India’s reopening, Pakistan has yet to lift its ban on Indian carriers and aircraft, forcing long-haul flights to reroute through southern airspace over Mumbai, the Arabian Sea, and Muscat for destinations in Europe and North America.

The full list of affected airports includes: Adhampur, Ambala, Amritsar, Awantipur, Bathinda, Bhuj, Bikaner, Chandigarh, Halwara, Hindon, Jaisalmer, Jammu, Jamnagar, Jodhpur, Kandla, Kangra (Gaggal), Keshod, Kishangarh, Kullu Manali (Bhuntar), Leh, Ludhiana, Mundra, Naliya, Pathankot, Patiala, Porbandar, Rajkot (Hirasar), Sarsawa, Shimla, Srinagar, Thoise, and Uttarlai.

Indigo Issues a Statement

India’s largest airline, IndiGo, issued a statement following the government’s announcement, indicating that flights on the affected routes would resume gradually. The airline also warned of possible delays and last-minute changes, advising travelers to frequently check flight updates.

Security protocols at all Indian airports remain heightened as per orders from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), which last week extended enhanced measures until May 18. These include increased baggage screening, a ban on terminal visitor entry, suspension of visitor ticket sales, and mandatory early arrival passengers are advised to reach the airport at least three hours before departure, and check-in counters are now closing 75 minutes ahead of scheduled flights.

Meanwhile, visuals from airports like Chandigarh earlier in the week highlighted the disruption, with empty terminals and grounded aircraft. The AAI confirmed that passengers whose flights were cancelled due to the airspace shutdown are eligible for full refunds or a one-time rescheduling waiver.

Sensex Soar by 2000+ points as Ceasefire Lifts Market Sentiment

Stock Market Surge

The domestic stock market witnessed an outstanding rally on Monday, with the Sensex surging over 2,000 points and the Nifty climbing close to the 24,700 mark. This sharp rise came after a weekend of significant geopolitical developments, most notably a ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan, which brought much-needed relief to investors after days of heightened border tensions.

Early in the trading session, the Sensex jumped as much as 2,089 points, or 2.62 per cent, touching an intraday high of 81,543.80. The Nifty also showed strong gains, rising by 669 points, or 2.78 per cent, to reach 24,677.30. By 9:59 am, the Sensex was up 2,270 points at 81,724.73, while the Nifty50 climbed 714 points to trade at 24,722.30. The overall mood on Dalal Street was upbeat, with investors welcoming signs of calm after a tense week.

Ceasefire and Positive Global Cues

The main trigger for this rally was the announcement of a temporary ceasefire between India and Pakistan. After intense cross-border drone and missile strikes, both countries agreed to halt all military actions on land, air, and sea with immediate effect. This de-escalation removed a major overhang on investor sentiment, historically known to weigh heavily on the markets during periods of conflict.

In addition to the ceasefire, positive global cues further boosted investor confidence. High-level trade talks between the United States and China in Switzerland signalled progress towards resolving long-standing tariff disputes, which supported global equity markets. Asian indices also rose, and Wall Street futures pointed upwards, reflecting optimism about a possible breakthrough in US-China trade relations.

Large-cap stocks led the rally, with Adani Ports, Axis Bank, Bajaj Finserv, Bajaj Finance, and NTPC among the top gainers, each rising between 3 and 4 percent in early trade. On the other hand, Sun Pharma was the only stock in the red, falling over 6 percent. The banking sector was particularly strong, with the Nifty Bank index up nearly 2 per cent at the open, led by Axis Bank and other financial stocks.

The combined market capitalisation of all companies listed on the BSE jumped by over Rs 11 lakh crore, reaching Rs 427.84 lakh crore, up from Rs 416.52 lakh crore in the previous session. This reflects the scale of investor wealth creation in just a single day of trading.

Market experts, however, advised investors to remain cautious and not get carried away by the euphoria. While the ceasefire has provided immediate relief, the situation remains fluid, and any fresh escalation could quickly reverse the gains. They also highlighted the importance of focusing on fundamentals such as corporate earnings, economic data, and global trade developments for long-term investment decisions.

Pakistan on Pulwama Attack:
Pakistan on Pulwama Attack: पाकिस्तानी वायुसेना के अधिकारी ने सार्वजनिक तौर पर कहा कि पुलवामा हमला पाकिस्तान का जबरदस्त सामरिक कौशल था। पाक सेना के अफसर का यह कबूलनामा आतंकियों से पाकिस्तानी सेना और सरकार का भारत के खिलाफ नापाक गठजोड़ का पुलिंदा खोलने के लिए काफ़ी है।

विदेशी मीडिया की मौजूदगी में दावा

Pakistan on Pulwama Attack:

Pakistan on Pulwama Attack:

Pulwama Attack

Pakistan On Pulwama Attack:
