Murshidabad Violence: SIMI, SDPI and radical groups under scanner

A recent wave of violence in Murshidabad has raised red flags among security agencies, as investigations suggest the involvement of radical activists from the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), operating under the banner of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI). Intelligence agencies are also probing potential links to extremist organisations based in Bangladesh. Authorities believe the unrest was not spontaneous but a pre-planned act of communal provocation.

Police sources confirmed that the Bengal police received credible intelligence pointing to SDPI’s active role in orchestrating the protests. For several days leading up to the violence, SDPI workers had reportedly been moving through local neighborhoods, particularly targeting Muslim youth with fear-mongering narratives about the amended Waqf Bill.

“Workers of SDPI, founded in 2009 after SIMI was outlawed, went door to door in various areas, spreading fear among teenagers and youth, warning them that the government was planning to seize Muslim-owned properties in the name of Waqf reforms,” an Intelligence Branch (IB) officer said.

The situation escalated sharply following the death of Ijaz Ahmed, who was injured during a police clash and later died at a Murshidabad hospital on Saturday. “His family confirmed the presence of an SDPI-led campaign in the locality, further reinforcing the suspicions,” the officer added.

Radical groups have deep roots in Murshidabad

Murshidabad has a long history of extremist activity. It once served as a hub for SIMI and later became a stronghold of the Popular Front of India (PFI), another radical group with known ties to Bangladesh-based fundamentalist outfits. The SDPI, closely linked with both SIMI and PFI, is now reportedly well-established in the region.

Intelligence agencies had been consistently alerting the Union government about the activities of radical outfits like PFI and SDPI in Murshidabad. In September 2022, the Centre banned the PFI for five years under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), citing threats to national security.

According to police, the violence was highly coordinated. Protests first broke out in Suti, where demonstrators blocked the national highway. As police forces concentrated there, simultaneous arson and violence erupted in nearby Shamsherganj, around ten kilometers away. “This diversion tactic prevented a quick police response and allowed the rioters to inflict significant damage,” said a senior officer.

Disturbing role of minors and returnees

Among the most troubling elements was the involvement of youth and minors, many between the ages of 10 and 20. Viral videos and eyewitness accounts reveal that many participants were young, with some reportedly manipulated into joining the violence. Many of these boys were migrant laborers who had returned home from other states for the Eid holidays and had minimal formal education.

The violence resulted in extensive damage to public infrastructure and selective targeting of Hindu-owned shops and homes, pointing to an unmistakable communal undertone. Authorities are also probing the possibility of external involvement, including cross-border influences.

Police and central forces remain heavily deployed in Murshidabad, with heightened security measures in place. The state administration is now under intense pressure to restore order, ensure accountability, and address the deepening communal tensions in one of Bengal’s most sensitive districts.

Mumbai Roads Concretisation:

Mumbai Roads Concretisation:

Mumbai Roads Concretisation:

Noida rape case: Supreme Court objects to Allahabad High Court’s “victim invited trouble” observation

Supreme court of India

The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday objected to a controversial observation made by the Allahabad High Court regarding a rape case of an M.A student in Noida. The Allahabad HC observed that the rape victim “herself invited trouble”. A bench led by Justices BR Gavai and A G Masih found the High Court’s observations highly insensitive.

The apex court also cautioned judges to be “careful” while dealing with cases involving sexual violence against women.

The Supreme Court took objection to the Allahabad High Court Order which granted bail to the accused of committing rape against a college student while observing that the victim had herself invited trouble and was responsible for the rape.

Justice Sanjay Kumar Singh of the High Court had made this comment on March 11 while granting bail to an accused who was arrested in December 2024 for alleged rape of a woman he had met at a bar in Hauz Khas, Delhi.

The Supreme Court made the observation while hearing a suo motu case initiated by it in relation to another case in which the Allahabad High Court had held that acts of grabbing a child victim’s breasts, breaking the string of her pyjama and attempting to drag her beneath a culvert do not constitute the offence of rape or attempt to rape. On Tuesday, a bench of Justices B R Gavai and A G Masih assembled to hear the case in which it had taken suo motu cognisance of a March 17, 2025, order of the Allahabad HC.

One has to be careful: Supreme Court slams Allahabad HC

The Allahabad High Court has granted bail to a rape accused, observing that the complainant “herself invited trouble” by agreeing to go to the applicant’s house after getting drunk. This comes days after the Supreme Court intervened to stay an “insensitive” order passed by another high court justice in a rape attempt case.
“Yes, bail can be granted.. but what is this discussion that she herself invited trouble, etc? One has to be careful when saying such things, especially on this side (judges). One thing here and there,” Bar and Bench quoted Justice BR Gavai.

Allahabad High Court’s observation on rape victim

“The victim is a student of M.A, hence, she was competent enough to understand the morality and significance of her act as disclosed by her in the FIR. This court is of the view that even if the allegation of the victim is accepted as true, then it can also be concluded that she herself invited trouble and was also responsible for the same. A similar stand has been taken by the victim in her statement,” stated the order passed by Justice Sanjay Kumar Singh in Allahabad High Court last month.

Noida rape case 2024

The March 11 order of the Allahabad High Court relates to the case which happened on September 21, 2024. According to police, the woman, a postgraduate student in Noida, had gone to attend a music concert in South Delhi with her friends. She met the accused, who was known to one of her friends, there. In her complaint, the victim has stated that the accused, who is also a student, offered to drop her back to Noida but instead took her to an apartment in Gurugram, where he allegedly raped her. The woman filed a complaint at the police station the next day.

AI in IVF
World's First Baby Born Using AI in IVF

Artificial Intelligence in In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF)

World First Baby Born Using AI- आज के समय में AI हर काम को आसान बनाता जा रहा है। (First Baby Born By IVF)

Widespread Unrest Erupts in Bengal Over Waqf (Amendment) Act: Clashes Erupt in Bhangar, Tension Persists in Murshidabad

Kolkata : Fresh incidents of violence shook West Bengal on Monday as demonstrations against the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, escalated into clashes in Bhangar, located in South 24 Parganas. This unrest occurred while areas in the Murshidabad district, previously impacted by communal tensions over the weekend, were gradually returning to a state of calm.

In Bhangar, a protest organized by Indian Secular Front (ISF) legislator Naushad Siddique turned violent when law enforcement intervened to prevent a large assembly of supporters from proceeding towards Ramlila Maidan in Kolkata, citing the absence of authorization for the gathering. The demonstrators, many of whom had traveled from adjacent areas such as Minakhan and Sandeshkhali, were stopped by police at Bhojerhat on the Basanti Highway.

The situation intensified as protesters attempted to break through police barricades. According to official reports, demonstrators engaged in stone throwing, set fire to at least five police motorcycles, and attacked a prison transport vehicle. Several police officers sustained injuries during the confrontation. A section of the highway was blocked for several hours before the police were able to disperse the crowd.

“The situation in Bhangar is now under control. Legal cases have been initiated against those involved in the violent acts,” stated a senior police official. Authorities also urged the public to disregard unsubstantiated rumors and cautioned against the spread of misinformation, warning of strict penalties for such actions.

Despite the turmoil in Bhangar, MLA Naushad Siddique addressed the rally in Kolkata, denouncing the Waqf (Amendment) Act as a “violation of the Constitution” and demanding its immediate revocation. He questioned the rationale behind preventing his party’s supporters from holding what he asserted was intended to be a peaceful demonstration. “If the state government is against the Act, why are they obstructing our protest?” he inquired.

Lingering Tensions in Murshidabad Following Weekend Unrest

The violence in Bhangar followed a series of communal clashes in the Murshidabad district, where protests related to the same Act resulted in the deaths of three individuals on April 12. The most severely affected areas included Suti, Dhulian, and Jangipur.

According to police sources, over 200 individuals have been apprehended in connection with the Murshidabad violence. Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), Jawed Shamim, reported that while no significant incidents had occurred in the preceding 36 hours, efforts to rehabilitate those displaced by the violence were ongoing.

Reports indicate that between 100 and 200 people, predominantly from the Hindu community, sought refuge in the neighboring Malda district across the Bhagirathi River. The BJP contested this figure, claiming that approximately 400 people were compelled to flee their homes. State BJP president Sukanta Majumdar visited a relief camp in Baishnabnagar and stated that numerous houses were set on fire during the riots.

Central Forces Deployed; State Appeals for Peace

In response to the escalating tensions, the Calcutta High Court mandated the deployment of 17 companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in the regions affected by the violence. Senior officials from the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) have been coordinating with the state police. During a visit to Murshidabad, BSF ADG (East) Ravi Gandhi was approached by women from the affected areas who pleaded for protection.

Chief Minister’s Appeal

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, while inaugurating a skywalk to the Kalighat temple on Monday, appealed to all communities to maintain peace and harmony. “Everyone has the right to protest, but it must be done with proper authorization. There will be attempts to provoke, but people must exercise self-control,” she stated.

Chief Minister reiterated the state government’s stance that the Waqf (Amendment) Act would not be implemented in West Bengal and urged protesters to direct their grievances to the central government rather than disrupting peace within the state. “No one should resort to violence in the name of religion,” she emphasized.

‘Licence Must Be Suspended’: Supreme Court Issues Strict Guidelines on Child Trafficking

The Supreme Court of India came down heavily on the Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday. The rebuke expressed deep concern over the handling of child trafficking cases in the state. The court further issued a set of stringent guidelines aimed at curbing such crimes across India.

The Supreme Court bench consisting of Justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan emphasised the urgency of fast-tracking such cases. They also directed lower courts to complete trials within six months. “High Courts across the country are directed to call for the status of pending trials in child trafficking cases. Then directions shall be issued to complete the trial in 6 months and also conduct a day-to-day trial,” the top court stated.

Hospitals Face Licence Suspension Over Missing Newborns

Taking a firm stand on hospital accountability, the court stated that any medical institution from which a newborn is trafficked must immediately have its licence suspended.

“If any newborn is trafficked from a hospital, the first step should be to suspend the licence of such hospitals. If any lady comes to deliver a child to the hospital and the baby is stolen, the first step is suspension of the licence,” Justice Pardiwala said.

A petition challenging anticipatory bail

The supreme court bench was hearing a petition challenging anticipatory bail to the accused in a child trafficking case from Uttar Pradesh. The bench came down heavily on the Allahabad High Court. The bench said the bail applications were “callously” dealt with and many accused are missing now. The apex court termed it as a careless approach in granting bail.

Callous Handling of Bail Applications Criticised

“These accused pose a serious threat to society. The least required of the high court while granting bail was to impose a condition to mark attendance at a police station every week. This police lost track of all the accused persons,” it said.

Justice Pardiwala said the bench was “thoroughly disappointed” with how the Uttar Pradesh government handled the matter. “…no appeal was made… no seriousness was shown… It appears the accused was longing for a son and then got a son for 4 lakh rupees. If you desire a son, you cannot go for a trafficked child. He knew the baby was stolen,” he said.

Accused Ordered to Surrender, Trials to Be Expedited

The Supreme court directed all accused in the case to surrender immediately and be sent to judicial custody. Meanwhile the trial courts were ordered to frame charges within a week. The bench also stated that if any accused are found absconding, non-bailable warrants are to be issued against them.

“Charges shall be framed within one week. If it’s informed that some accused have absconded, the trial court will issue non-bailable warrants. Trial of those present shall go on and not be delayed,” the bench ruled.

Strict Warning to States on Implementation

Justice Pardiwala emphasised that the judgment includes detailed recommendations to curb child trafficking. It also expects state governments to implement them at the earliest.

“High Courts across the country are directed to call for the status of pending trials in child trafficking cases… Any laxity shown in implementing the directions would be taken seriously and be treated as contempt,” the court said.

Emotional Appeal to Parents

In a powerful observation, Justice Pardiwala highlighted the emotional trauma the parents of the child go through when a child is lost to trafficking. “The pain and agony a parent faces when a child dies is different from when a child is lost to gangs of trafficking… when the child dies, the child is with the Almighty, but when lost, they are at the mercy of such gangs,” he said.

According to reports, child trafficking and forced child labour thrives in India despite strict laws. Latest data confirms that around 36,000 children still remain untraceable since 2020.
