11-year-old Sohit Kumar Breaks National Archery Record

Sohit Kumar Archery Championship

Sohit Kumar, aged 11, broke the national archery record on Wednesday, at the Under-15 National Archery Championship, held in Guntur. Kumar, competing against athletes much older than him, set an impressive record by scoring 710 points out of 720 in the championship, securing a gold medal to his name.

Humble Background

Sohit Kumar hails from Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. His father is a vegetable vendor, and uses crutches for movement. At his son’s achievement the proud father commented, “No one in the family was ever a sportsman. This is god’s blessing and my son’s hard work.”

Sohit’s family is originally from Aligarh, but had moved to Jabalpur 15 years ago. Earlier, his father was a farm worker for Rinku Chaudhary, an army physiotherapist. When Rinku relocated, the family moved too.

After losing a leg in a road accident 15 years ago, Sohit’s father continued to provide for the family, selling vegetables on a pushcart while on crutches. Sohit has inherited the same grit and resilience.

Chaudhary spotted Sohit’s potential early and introduced him to coach Ricchpal Singh at the archery academy. Although the academy typically accepts students aged 12–16, Ricchpal was so struck by Sohit’s raw talent that he made an exception.

“I felt if he wasn’t given a chance now, his talent would go to waste. That’s why I gave him admission — and he proved himself,” said Ricchpal.

Compound Archer

Sohit is a compound archer, and has his sights set on the 2028 LA Olympics, where the ‘compound’ category will be introduced.

A Class 7 student, he trains at the MP Archery Academy in Jabalpur. At just 10, Sohit even competed for Madhya Pradesh in the Senior National Championship in Jamshedpur last year. Though he couldn’t win a medal, the his performance got him noticed.

He went on to win gold, silver, and bronze medals at the SGFI School National Games in Gujarat in 2024, and a gold at the Open National Archery Tournament in Uttarakhand the same year.

21 Products from UP Receive GI Tag Certification, Including Banarasi Tabla & Bharwa Mirch

Uttar Pradesh’s rich cultural and craft heritage is gaining international recognition. This comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, awarded Geographical Indication (GI) certificates in the state.

The certificates were given to 21 traditional products from Uttar Pradesh. The ceremony not only celebrated the diversity of Uttar Pradesh but also highlighted the success of the Yogi government’s flagship ‘One District, One Product’ (ODOP) initiative.

Banarasi Tabla & Bharwan Mirch

Among the newly certified items were the iconic Banarasi Tabla and the flavorful Banarasi Bharwan Mirch, both now officially recognized for their unique regional identity. These products, emblematic of the state’s deep-rooted tradition and craftsmanship, will now shine on the global platform with a distinctive identity.

With a total of 77 GI-certified products, Uttar Pradesh currently holds the top position in India. Notably, the Kashi region alone accounts for 32 GI tags, making it a global hub of GI-recognized items.

Traditional products from Varanasi

Several traditional products from Varanasi, such as the Shehnai, metal casting craft, mural painting, Lal Peda, Thandai, Tirangi Barfi, and Karonda from Chiraigaon, have now received GI tag certificates. These items are not just cultural treasures but also a source of livelihood for thousands of artisans. With the GI tag, they now have a chance to showcase their skills in international markets.

According to GI expert and Padma Shri awardee Dr. Rajnikant, the Kashi region is the world’s GI hub, with 32 GI-tagged products, involving nearly 20 lakh people and generating an annual business of Rs 25,500 crore.

Bareilly’s furniture

The new list of GI-certified products also includes Bareilly’s furniture, zari-zardozi and terracotta work, Mathura’s Sanjhi craft, Bundelkhand’s Kathiya wheat, and Pilibhit’s bamboo flute. These items represent the unique cultural identity of their regions. With GI certification, they now receive legal protection and enhanced brand value.

Additionally, Chitrakoot’s wood craft, Agra’s stone inlay work, and Jaunpur’s Imarti have also been granted GI tags. This shows that efforts are being made to bring hidden traditional crafts and flavors from every part of Uttar Pradesh onto the global stage.

Importance of GI tag

Notably, a GI tag not only confirms the authenticity of a product but also helps farmers and artisans get better prices in the market. It also creates new employment opportunities. Due to efforts of the Yogi government and the One District, One Product (ODOP) policy, Uttar Pradesh continues to lead in the number of GI-tagged products in India.

Deadly Storms Strike Bihar: Lightning and Hail Claim 80 Lives Across Multiple Districts

The state of Bihar faced deadly storms during the last two days, which claimed 80 lives across its districts through heavy precipitation occurrences, strong thunderstorms, powerful lightning strikes, and damaging hail storms. The crisis affected both human lives and economic stability, thereby prompting an immediate reaction from official entities.

Among the worst affected was Nalanda district, which reported the highest casualty count 23 lives lost, including six people who died when a tree fell on a temple where they had taken shelter during the storm. Other victims were found in areas such as Jaitipur, Dekpura, Silao, and Giriyak, according to officials.

The sudden and severe weather system also caused multiple fatalities in other parts of the state. Patna, Gaya, Siwan, and Bhojpur each recorded four deaths, while the Jamui and Gopalganj districts reported three each. Several other districts, including Jehanabad, Arwal, Saharsa, Katihar, Bhagalpur, and Darbhanga, confirmed at least one death. District-level officials have been working to verify fatalities and begin postmortem procedures before handing over the bodies to families.

Rescue Efforts Are Still Underway

Relief efforts are underway as fallen trees and debris continue to block roads and damage homes. Police and emergency teams have been deployed to affected zones to assist in clearing routes and restoring accessibility. The Bihar government has also urged local residents to remain cautious as weather alerts persist.

On Thursday, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced compensation of Rs 4 lakh for the families of each person who died in the incidents. Expressing his condolences, he also called on citizens to limit outdoor movement during extreme weather unless absolutely necessary.

This recent weather havoc follows an alarming trend. According to data shared in the Bihar Economic Survey 2024–25, lightning and thunderstorms caused 275 deaths in the state during 2023 alone. Rohtas, Aurangabad, Madhepura, and Jamui were listed among the most affected regions last year.

Police are Surveying Affected Areas

In addition to human casualties, the storms wreaked havoc on agriculture and infrastructure. Many homes were damaged, and livestock losses were reported. A senior official from the State Disaster Management Department stated that authorities are surveying affected areas to document damages to property and crops so that financial aid can be distributed accordingly.

Adding to the urgency, the India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for the state. It has warned of further thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over the coming days, especially in areas like Supaul, Katihar, and the southeastern districts. For April 14 and 15, similar weather is expected to persist across central and southwestern parts of Bihar.

Emergency contact numbers have been released for residents in high-risk zones. Meanwhile, district administrations have been instructed to remain on high alert, ensuring quick response in case of further calamities.

Justin Bieber Abruptly Cuts Ties with Drew House, Drops Hints of New Fashion Venture

In a surprising move, global pop sensation Justin Bieber has publicly severed his association with Drew House, the clothing label he helped establish, declaring that the brand no longer reflects who he is today. His statement, posted briefly to his Instagram Stories before being deleted, urged fans not to support the brand if they supported him as a person.

Justin Bieber took to Instagram to post a Story of Cutting Ties

The now-vanished post featured a screenshot of Drew House’s Instagram page, overlaid with a message: “I, Justin Bieber, am no longer involved with this brand. Drew House doesn’t stand for me, my family, or my life. If you support the real me, don’t spend your money on Drew House.”

Interestingly, this announcement came shortly after Bieber released a cryptic animated video. The short clip showed a cartoon version of the singer entering a home filled with Drew House merchandise. He then ignites the space using a match, walking away with wife Hailey and their infant son, Jack Blues Bieber, as the house burns. The video ends with the word “SKYLRK,” sparking speculation about a new project on the horizon.

Fans React to the Decision

The video has been interpreted by fans as symbolic of an artistic farewell to Drew House and a teaser for what’s next. Some noticed that the match used to set fire to the animated house bore the same logo seen in branding connected to Bieber’s rumored new venture, SKYLRK.

Bieber’s relationship with Drew House goes back to 2018 when he co-founded the brand alongside his longtime collaborator and former stylist Ryan Good. Officially launched in January 2019, Drew House became known for its playful designs and signature yellow smiley face logo, capturing a loyal following worldwide.

Justin Hints of New Brand

While Drew House was once a reflection of Bieber’s creative expression, the recent developments indicate that he’s moving in a new direction one that prioritizes personal values, privacy, and perhaps a reimagined approach to fashion through SKYLRK.

As the singer distances himself from a brand he helped build, fans and industry insiders alike are watching closely to see what his next chapter will bring.

DMK Faces Political Heat as Minister Ponmudi’s Vulgar Remarks Spark Widespread Backlash

Source: PTI

The ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu is grappling with internal criticism and national outrage after Forest Minister K Ponmudi made controversial comments at a public function, sparking a social and political storm. The minister, known for his outspoken nature, has now been stripped of his post as Deputy General Secretary of the party.

The controversy began after a video of Ponmudi went viral on social media, where he is seen narrating an inappropriate anecdote involving a sex worker and a man. In the story, the woman allegedly asks the man whether he identifies as a Shaivite or a Vaishnavite referencing the horizontal and vertical forehead marks traditionally worn by followers of the two Hindu sects. She then links these religious symbols to sexual positions, prompting sharp criticism from across the spectrum.

In response to the public outcry, the DMK acted swiftly by removing Ponmudi from his party leadership role. Tiruchi N Siva has since been appointed in his place. However, sources suggest that more disciplinary action could follow, with internal discussions reportedly underway about whether to relieve him of his ministerial duties as well.

Remarks Received Backlash Within the Party

The remarks did not sit well even within the party. DMK MP Kanimozhi, daughter of late party patriarch M Karunanidhi, took to social media to express her disapproval. She described Ponmudi’s speech as “unacceptable,” stressing that vulgarity, regardless of intent or context, cannot be justified.

Outside the party, criticism came in fast. Actor and BJP leader Khushbu Sundar directly addressed Chief Minister MK Stalin on social media, asking whether such remarks reflect the values of the party or the women in his own family. She challenged the DMK’s silence, questioning whether the leadership takes any offense when such language is directed at women and Hindu beliefs.

National BJP leaders also seized the moment. Amit Malviya, head of the BJP’s IT Cell, accused the DMK of continuing a pattern of targeting Hindu traditions. He tied Ponmudi’s comments to earlier remarks made by Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin about Sanatan Dharma, suggesting a coordinated ideological attack. Malviya also blamed opposition parties in the I.N.D.I.A. bloc, alleging that they are bound together not by vision but by a shared disregard for Hindu values and traditions.

Singer Chinmayi Sripaada Expresses Frustration

Adding her voice to the growing dissent, singer Chinmayi Sripaada took to social media to express her frustration. “This is a joke. The joke is on us,” she posted, referring to the way such vulgarity is normalised under the guise of humour. She called for accountability, suggesting that the public should not tolerate casual sexism and religious insensitivity from public leaders.

Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai called the incident disgraceful and accused the DMK of lowering the tone of political discourse in the state. In a strongly worded post, he called the remarks “filth” and said the people of Tamil Nadu deserve better. He dismissed the party’s move to remove Ponmudi from an internal post as insufficient, warning that such behavior would not be forgotten.

Ponmudi, who previously served as the state’s Higher Education Minister, is no stranger to controversy. In the past, he has made headlines for his comments targeting non-Tamil speakers in the state, once dismissively labeling Hindi speakers as panipuri vendors a remark that was also widely condemned.

As the political fallout continues, it remains to be seen how far the DMK leadership will go to contain the damage. For now, the controversy has ignited a larger debate on decency in political speech, respect for religious beliefs, and the accountability of those in power.
