Chandigarh Govt school students to be educated at Health Education Centre

Chandigarh Govt school students to be educated at Health Education Centre
In a first-of-its-kind initiative, Chandigarh administration is coming up with a Health Education Centre for government school students in the Union Territory. The Chandigarh Health Education Centre (CHEC) will be set up in the Government Model High School, Sector 22, and is expected to be operational by December this year.
The project is a joint initiative by Chandigarh administration and Rotary Club Chandigarh, which is being funded by the Government of India. The Central Government has provided an initial funding of Rs 50 lakh to the project for FY 2024-25 under the Samagra Shiksha scheme, while Rotary Club Chandigarh is providing equipment and training worth around Rs 1 crore.
No admission fees will be charged from the students for the Centre which is completely free. Students studying in classes 3-10 will have to visit the centre at least once a year.

Subjects in focus

At the Health Education Centre, knowledge will be imparted on topics like General Health, Oral Health, Nutrition, Physical Activity, Drug/Alcohol/Tobacco Abuse, Pregnancy and Prevention of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs).
Talking about the project, Harsuhinder Pal Singh Brar, Director School Education, Chandigarh said, “This centre will create a cycle of learning. Children will be educated about healthy practices and they will in turn educate their parents and relatives. Teachers will also educate other teachers. Our aim is that the learning shouldn’t be just a one day visit to the centre but it should continue in the school curriculum as well, while the practical experience from the centre visits will enhance its understanding.”

Infrastructure

The project started in 2017-18, when Rotary International Chandigarh submitted a proposal for establishment of a Health Education Centre. As per the proposal, health education should be imparted to at least 1.5 lakh students of government schools every year at the centre in its initial phase. There should be at least six class rooms with a capacity of 75 students each and an auditorium with a capacity of 150 students for the Health Education Centre.
The tender has been finalised, and construction is set to commence in a few days for the project which is collaboration between Chandigarh Union Territory Administration and Rotary Club Chandigarh. The Government of India plans to replicate this project across the country.

Cashless fees in Chandigarh Govt schools

Meanwhile, in an attempt to enhance transparency and save time, Chandigarh Education Department has decided to provide the facility of online fee submission in government schools. The facility will be provided to students of classes IX to XII. The department is planning to collect fees online using the govt gateway. The digital fees collection facility is expected to commence from July this year.

Are Non-Stick Pans Increasing Your Hospital Bills?

Are Non-Stick Pans Increasing Your Hospital Bills?
Health concerns and chronic illnesses in Indian have been at a consistant rise and maybe it is time to straighten your back and start thinking about how and why is it that the land of Yoga and home cooking has taken a u-turn when it comes to leading a healthier lifestyle. Is it simply a trend or lack of regulations? Roughly 5.8 million Indians die because of diabetes, cancer, stroke, heart and lung diseases each year. That is approximately every 1 out of 4 Indians. While there are a lot of factors to be considered, today we focus on our homes and the utensils we have been using for the past 2 decades.
Non-stick pans, a staple in many Indian kitchens for their convenience, may pose significant health and environmental risks. The coating that makes these pans non-stick is Teflon, scientifically known as PTFE (Poly Tetra Fluoro Ethylene). While it simplifies cooking and cleaning, the hidden dangers associated with this chemical are concerning.

Health Hazards

PTFE’s main advantage, its non-stick property, comes with a significant drawback: it can release toxic fumes when heated above 260 degrees Celsius. These fumes can make food toxic in just 1.5 to 2 minutes of cooking. This makes almost anything cooked in non-stick pans extremely dangerous to health.

Environmental Impact

Another grave concern is PTFE’s durability. This chemical does not break down in the environment or in our bodies, leading to long-term contamination. Its persistence means it stays indefinitely, accumulating and causing potential harm over time to both our internal organs and our mother earth.

India Lags Behind in Regulations

Non-stick pans also contain PFOA (Perfluorooctanoic Acid), a chemical linked to cancer. The health risks associated with PFOA are liver tumors, breast cancer, reduced fertility, thyroid and kidney disorder. Due to its dangerous effects, Europe has banned PFOA, and the United States has highly regulated its use. However in the revised Dietary Guidelines for Indians (DGIs), the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) have advised against non-stick cookware due to health risks from PFOA, PFOS in Teflon coatings, but there are no stringent regulations on PFOA, leading to its continued presence in many products available in the market.

Misleading Labels

Many brands in the Indian market claim their products are PFOA-free, giving a false sense of security. While they may not contain PFOA, they still use PTFE, which continues to pose health risks. Consumers might be unaware that their “safe” non-stick cookware still has dangerous chemicals.

Safer Alternatives

Given the risks associated with non-stick pans, it’s worth considering alternative cookware options that are both safe and effective. Cast iron, clay, copper, and stainless steel are excellent alternatives. Each has its unique benefits:

Cast Iron: Naturally non-stick when seasoned properly, adds iron to your food.

Clay: Enhances flavor and provides even cooking.

Copper: Excellent heat conduction, stylish appearance.

Stainless Steel: Durable, non-reactive, and versatile for all cooking needs.

The convenience of non-stick pans comes at a high cost to health and the environment. While regulations in some countries have addressed the dangers of chemicals like PFOA, others, including India, lag behind. Consumers must be aware of the risks and consider safer alternatives such as cast iron, clay, copper, and stainless steel. Making informed choices in the kitchen can lead to better health outcomes and a cleaner environment.
Non-stick pans might seem like a quick fix for easy cooking and cleaning, but the hidden dangers of PTFE and the PFOA outweigh the benefits. With many safer and effective alternatives available, it’s wise to reconsider the cookware we use daily. By choosing healthier options, we can protect ourselves, our families, and the environment from the long-term consequences of harmful chemicals.

Climate Change to cause loss of $38 Trillion in India’s Income by 2050: Report

Climate Change to cause loss of $38 Trillion in India's Income by 2050: Report
Climate change is not just a concern for the environment that we live in, but also poses a major threat to human life and economy of the world as revealed by new studies and reports. A recent study published has revealed that the world will lose 19 per cent of its income by 2050 because of extreme weather events caused by climate change. In fact, a report by UK-based NGO Christian Aid has claimed that climate change related weather events have cost the world at least $41 billion since COP 28.

Economic Impacts of Climate Change

According to a recent study conducted by researchers from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impacts Research that is published in the journal Nature, the global economy is predicted to lose about 19 percent of its income as a result of climate change related events. India will be among the worst hit nations which is expected to suffer a loss of about 22 percent of its income by 2050 which would amount to around $38 trillion. This is true even if the efforts are made to significantly reduce carbon emissions starting immediately.
Scientist and one of the study’s authors, Maximilian Kotz, has stated that loss of income will affect a large amount of population residing across North America, Europe, South Asia and Africa. The losses will occur as a result of effects of climate change on agriculture productivity, economic productivity of labour, and loss of infrastructure caused due to extreme weather events. These losses are much higher than the cost of limiting global warming to two degrees.
These findings are based on the trends observed over the last four decades across 1600 regions. The study has claimed that significant economic losses will be observed over the next 25 years across the globe including the developed nations such as Germany, France and the United States of America, laying the blame on historical emissions caused for rapid and unsustainable development. The study has also clarified that if efforts are not made immediately to reduce the emissions, the losses could increase to 60 per cent by 2100.

International Response

The international community has been working towards reducing the effects of climate change by discussing solutions at COP conducted annually and working on agreements such as the new loss and damage fund set up during COP 28 organised in Dubai. However, there is still a major gap in action that needs to be filled with energy transition and elimination of usage of fossil fuels. Additionally support needs to be extended to vulnerable nations, that are at most risk of extreme weather related events.
The report by the UK-based NGO, Christian Aid has asked the developed countries to provide enhanced financial support to meet the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) for climate finance that is to be in the agenda of discussion at the upcoming COP 29 in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Conclusion

Climate change is not only an academic discussion. It is not something that might affect someone sometime in future. It is here and it is causing loss of lives, resources and economy. It is beyond high time we take coordinated action, to prevent further damage rather than accrue resources to control the situation after the disaster.

Tide Turners: The Hotel Chain in India Organises Beach Clean-Up Drive on World Ocean Day

Tide Turners: The Hotel Chain in India Organises Beach Clean-Up Drive on World Ocean Day
In celebration of World Ocean Day on June 8, 2024, ibis Hotels across India are launching a series of impactful initiatives aimed at contributing to the global effort to protect our oceans through beach clean-up drives and conservation activities. This year’s theme, “Awaken New Depths,” underscores the imperative for innovative approaches and collective actions to safeguard our marine ecosystems.
It is estimated that between 75 to 199 million tons of plastic waste are currently in our oceans, with 33 billion pounds of plastic entering the marine environment annually. By 2050, it is projected that plastic could outweigh all the fish in the sea. These staggering statistics underscore the critical importance of protecting our oceans. Oceans are not just vast bodies of water; they are the lifeblood of our planet, providing us with oxygen, regulating climate, and supporting a diverse array of marine ecosystems. Preserving the health of our oceans is crucial not only for marine life but also for the well-being of human society.
Keeping this urgent need in mind, ibis hotels from four cities located near sea beaches have taken up this initiative to partner with local NGOs for beach clean-ups to protect the oceans and preserve marine ecosystems.. Additionally, they are conducting educational programs to raise awareness and foster environmental stewardship.
In Mumbai, ibis Mumbai Airport, ibis Mumbai Vikhroli, ibis Thane, and ibis Navi Mumbai have joined hands with renowned NGOs for beach clean-up drives, reflecting their commitment to environmental sustainability. Beyond cleaning up the shores, these hotels are actively engaging with the local community, emphasizing the critical importance of sea cleaning for the health of our oceans.
Meanwhile, in Chennai, ibis Chennai SIPCOT and ibis Chennai City Centre are partnering with “Tree Foundation India” and the Chennai Municipal Corporation to address ocean pollution. Their collaborative efforts extend beyond mere clean-ups; they include sponsoring a sea bed cleaning at Kovalam coast, donating beach cleaning equipment, organizing educational programs, and enlightening fishermen on the significance of maintaining a clean ocean environment.
Similarly, in Goa, ibis Style Goa Calangute and ibis Style Goa Vagator have teamed up with “SARTHAK FOUNDATION GOA” to undertake beach clean-up drives aimed at preserving Goa’s picturesque coastline. In Kochi, ibis is collaborating with the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, emphasizing the importance of maintaining clean and healthy coastal ecosystems.
Together, these initiatives underscore ibis Hotels’ dedication to protecting our oceans and fostering sustainable practices for future generations.
Mr.Tejus Jose, Director of Operations at ibis & ibis Styles India – ibis Hotels India, highlights the broader environmental context of these initiatives: “Caring for our oceans isn’t just an environmental concern—it’s a fundamental responsibility. As the head of operations at ibis & ibis Styles India – ibis Hotels India, witnessing the alarming pollution threatening our oceans deeply resonates with me. The devastating effects of this pollution, from endangering marine life to disrupting fragile ecosystems, highlight the urgency of our actions. Since many of our properties are located close to the beach, it is our moral responsibility to take care of the oceans. Through initiatives like beach clean-ups on World Ocean Day, we actively demonstrate our commitment to sustainable practices, ensuring that our actions align with our values of environmental stewardship and community engagement. By safeguarding our oceans, we not only protect marine life but also ensure a healthier planet for future generations.”
Mr. Anant Leekha, the Cluster Head for ibis Mumbai, adds insight into the on-ground activities: “Our initiatives on World Ocean Day reflect our commitment to environmental conservation. With over 400+ ibis employees volunteering, we are engaging in activities like beach clean-ups and community education drives across Mumbai, Chennai, Goa, and Kochi. These efforts, in collaboration with local NGOs and government bodies, demonstrate our dedication to making a tangible impact. We believe that through collective action, we can contribute significantly to preserving our oceans and supporting local communities.”
The World Ocean Day 2024 theme, aligns perfectly with ibis Hotels’ initiatives. By working together with local communities, NGOs, and government institutions, ibis is committed to fostering a healthier, more sustainable environment for future generations. These initiatives not only address immediate environmental concerns but also aim to inspire ongoing efforts to protect our oceans.

New Government urged to table animal welfare bill in upcoming Parliament Monsoon session

New Government urged to table animal welfare bill in upcoming Parliament Monsoon session
Delhi, India: With the newly formed Government assuming office this month, Humane Society International/India (HSI/India) and People for Animals (PFA) urge the Honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a letter to expedite passage of the long-awaited Prevention of Cruelty to Animal (Amendment) Bill 2022 in the upcoming Monsoon session of the Parliament.
The draft bill introduces amendments to the current animal law including stringent penalties for animal cruelty, newer cognizable offenses, and establishes five fundamental freedoms for every animal—freedom from hunger and thirst; freedom from discomfort; freedom from pain, injury, and disease; and freedom to express normal and natural behaviour.
Despite India having some of the strongest animal laws in the world, the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 has remained unchanged since its adoption, giving scope to animal offenders to go scot-free after committing serious crimes against animals. Currently, the maximum fine for even the most heinous crime against animals—including beating, poisoning, raping or burning an animal—is a mere Rs. 50 (and Rs. 100 for repeat offenders).
The pressure to update this law has been increasing since 2016, with over 400,000 signatures submitted on petitions to amend the animal welfare laws. In 2022, over 180 parliamentarians demanded such an amendment, echoed by the 50,000 emails and letters sent in 2023 by animal advocates and the general public to PM Narendra Modi to amend the 1960 Act.
Alokparna Sengupta, managing director of Humane Society International/India, said: “There is an urgent need for bringing the new act. In the long run, the lack of a better law poses a great threat to society at large. In the pursuit of compassion, justice and a more humane society, the time to act is now and we need urgent reforms from the newly elected Government that will act as a deterrent against animal cruelty and be applicable to both individuals and institutions.”
Gauri Maulekhi, trustee of People for Animals, said: “Amending the PCA Act is imperative and long overdue. It is well known that violence against animals is a precursor to violence against other vulnerable members of our society, be it women, children, or our elders. Strengthening this law protects animals and serves as a pivotal step towards cultivating empathy and respect, fostering a society where compassion thrives, and brutality finds no haven.”
Some recent cruelty cases of a highly disturbing nature include that of Jai, the community dog in Mumbai being brutally killed; a pet golden retriever in Gurgaon thrashed in an elevator by a dog walker; and a street dog being beaten brutally in Jagatpuri, Delhi.
The passage of this law is expected to set a strong precedent by raising fines and punishment for cruelty offenses against animals and helping to build a society that treats domesticated and wild animals with care and compassion.
Urge the new government to keep up with the times and adopt better laws against animal cruelty by signing the
petition.

The vibrant murals span a modern take on traditional art forms, share the joys of a train journey from Jodhpur Junction, from the long moustached man in Rajasthani attire to the blushing bride in the palanquin – a colourful surprize awaits on every turn as the walls are now a canvas showcasing Rajasthan’s unique art and culture.
Located on the edge of the Thar Desert, the peak summer months sees Jodhpur city’s maximum temperatures soar past 45OC. To make a sustainable difference to the people living here, AkzoNobel has coated over 100 rooftops with Dulux Weathershield Protect. This high-quality exterior emulsion provides all-weather protection to homes and comes with the special Sunreflect TechnologyTM that reduces the temperature of exterior surfaces by up to 5OC. As a result, in its new avatar, the old town is literally cooler and more liveable too!
Elaborating on the Let’s Colour Jodhpur initiative, Rajiv Rajgopal, Managing Director, AkzoNobel India said, “The sheer joy that our “Let’s Colour” initiative is bringing to over 1,000 residents of the Surya Colony is a source of great pride for us. AkzoNobel’s efforts in this project go beyond preserving the heritage of the ‘Blue City’. We’re proud to support local artists with opportunities to showcase the art and culture of Rajasthan. We’re confident that with the magic of Dulux paint, this bright, blue hillside will not only bring cheer to the families living here; but also create new livelihood opportunities for the local community as the area becomes a must-see hotspot for tourists.”
The transformation which took over four months saw 15 AkzoNobel Paint Academy painters, 10 local artists, 50 local residents and AkzoNobel employee volunteers pool their creative talents. Over 5,600 liters of AkzoNobel’s range of Dulux decorative paints were applied to over 250,000 square feet of walls. While Dulux Promise Exterior paint with its special anti-peel properties now increases the durability of home facades; Dulux Gloss enamel paint has added an inviting sheen to the metal main doors of homes. But that’s not all – the transformation extends to the community walkways and staircases, which are now a rainbow of colours with Akzo Nobel India’s recently launched Dulux FloorPlus paint.
An integral part of ‘AkzoNobel Cares’ – AkzoNobel’s umbrella societal program, Let’s Colour community initiative is all about leveraging the transformative power of paint to inspire people, uplift communities, empower local youth with employable skills and making living spaces more fun, live-able, and enjoyable. A key component of AkzoNobel’s People. Planet. Paint. purpose, over 2,400 Let’s Colour projects globally have benefitted more than 82 million people in 46 countries.
