Newly Married Navy Officer on Honeymoon Killed in Pahalgam Terror Attack

pahalgam terror attack

An Indian Navy Officer, Lieutenant Vinay Narwal, who was posted in Kochi, was killed in the terrorist attack in Pahalgam. The attack, which targeted a group of tourists, left at least 26 people dead, including two foreign nationals.

Lt Narwal had travelled to Kashmir following his marriage on April 16, with a reception held on April 19. He was on his honeymoon with his wife while on leave.

The couple had plans to visit Europe for their first trip together as a married couple. However, they had to change their plans because of visa issues. Following which they decided to go to Kashmir.

Dedicated and Promising Officer

Hailing from Karnal, Haryana, Lt Narwal had joined the Navy just two years ago and was known among peers and superiors as a dedicated and promising officer, defence officials confirmed to ANI.

“He was married 4 days ago. Everybody was happy,” the deceased’s neighbor Naresh Bansal told ANI. “We have received the information that he was killed by terrorists, and he died on the spot. He was an officer in the Navy.”

We were just having bhelpuri… and then he shot my husband. The gunman said my husband was not a Muslim and then shot him,” the officer’s wife said in a trembling voice.

Background and Family

An engineering graduate, Vinay joined the Navy as a lieutenant three years ago, and he was posted in Kochi, Kerala. Vinay’s father, Rajesh Kumar, works as a superintendent in the Customs Department in Panipat. His grandfather, Hawa Singh, retired from the Haryana Police in 2004. His mother, Asha Devi, and grandmother, Biru Devi, are homemakers. Vinay’s younger sister, Srishti, is preparing for civil services in Delhi.

Vinay was engaged to Himanshi from Gurgaon two months ago after their family fixed the match. Himanshi is pursuing a PhD and takes online classes for children. Himanshi’s father, Sunil Kumar, is an Excise and Taxation Officer in Gurgaon.

According to family members, Vinay took leave for the wedding on March 28, married on April 16 in Mussoorie, and had a reception in Karnal on April 19. “They had planned a honeymoon in Europe, but it was canceled due to visa issues. Instead, they left for Jammu and Kashmir on April 21 and stayed in a hotel in Pahalgam on April 22. After dining, they went to the destination point where the terrorist attack occurred,” said a family member.

Vinay was supposed to celebrate his 27th birthday on May 1 on his return from J&K. “The family planned a big party upon his return from the honeymoon,” said Amit, a family member. Vinay and Himanshi were supposed to return to Kochi on May 3, where they had booked a rest house.

Neighbour Naresh Bansal said the house was filled with joy due to the recent wedding. “We got to know on Tuesday evening that terrorists shot Vinay after asking his name, while Himanshi narrowly escaped,” said Bansal.

Vinay’s grandfather, Hawa Singh, said Vinay attended Sant Kabir School in Karnal and later studied engineering in Delhi. “He prepared for the Combined Defence Services (CDS) exam since school but was unsuccessful. He then prepared for the SSB and was selected for the Navy three years ago,” said Singh.

Hawa Singh added that their family has a history of military service. His uncle and Vinay’s maternal grandfather’s brother were also in the army, with the latter having fought alongside the British. His nephew is also in the army. Hawa Singh himself was in the BSF before joining and retiring from the Haryana Police.

Lieutenant Narwal’s grandfather said, “We request the government that such people (attackers) be given strict punishment and terrorism be ended by any means necessary…”

PM Modi’s Statement

In a post on X, PM Modi stated that those responsible for this heinous act will be brought to justice.

“I strongly condemn the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured person recovers as soon as possible. All possible assistance is being provided to those affected,” PM Modi said.

“Those behind this heinous act will be brought to justice…they will not be spared! Their evil agenda will never succeed. Our resolve to fight terrorism is unshakeable, and it will get even stronger,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Jammu and Kashmir LG Manoj Sinha arrived in Srinagar to hold a key security review meeting.

Delhi to Get its Third Skywalk at Madhuban Chowk

Skywalk

The Public Works department is planning to construct a skywalk at the famous Madhuban Chowk of Northwest Delhi. The place witnesses heavy traffic and is also one of the top 10 black spots that are accident-prone in the capital city. This walkway will ensure the safety of pedestrians and will also help to divert traffic around Rohini Court, Pritampura market and the mall.

The earlier plan of PWD was to construct an 800 m long foot overbridge that connects to the Metro corridors of Pritampura. However, the new plan now is to construct a skywalk at Madhuban Chowk, which connects the Rohini court directly with Pitampura Metro Station of the red line. The other side of the skywalk will connect to the newly constructed station between Janakpuri West and RK Ashram on the pink line.

“The estimated cost of the skywalk is ₹17.5 crore. A proposal stating that PWD will hand over the project to DMRC, as it is already working on phase 4 of the Metro line in the area, has been sent to the minister for approval. The PWD will give DMRC the budget for the construction,” said an official to the national media.

Accident-Prone Area

A significant number of accidents have occurred at Madhuban Chowk between 2020 to 2023, including ten fatalities on average per annum. If this project takes off, Delhi’s third skywalk will save pedestrians and vehicles from any further accidents around Madhuban Chowk. The first skywalk was constructed at ITO, which connects to Tilak Marg, Pragati Maidan and Supreme Court Metro Station. The second one is located on the South campus and connects the metro station with Satya Niketan and further.

Pope Francis Funeral Scheduled For Saturday Morning

Pope Francis

Pope Francis’  funeral will be held on Saturday in St Peter’s Square, as decided by the Roman Catholic Cardinal. The solemn ceremony will draw leaders from around the world.

Francis died on Monday at the age of 88 after suffering a stroke and cardiac arrest. This ends his turbulent reign, which involves repeated clashes with traditionalists and public support for the poor and marginalised.

His body will be taken into the adjacent Saint Peter’s Basilica on Wednesday morning in a procession led by the Cardinals. His final rites will be performed early in the morning on Saturday, in front of the 16th-century Basilica. The ceremony will be presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, the 91-year-old dean of the College of Cardinals.

Trump’s Reaction

US President Donald Trump, who clashed with the Pope multiple times on immigration and other issues, said that he will be present at the funeral ceremony with his wife and children. Other heads of state who are likely to attend the ceremony are the presidents of Brazil, France, Germany, Poland, Ukraine and Argentina (Francis’ home nation).

Harvard University Sue President Trump Over Freezing Research Funding

Harvard University

Howard University sued U.S. President Donald Trump for freezing billions of dollars in federal funding to the elite institute for research, after it rejected a list of White House demands because these would undermine the institute’s independence.

The lawsuit was filed in the federal court in Boston against the broad attack on funding for cutting-edge research at major universities. “This case involves the government’s efforts to use the withholding of federal funding as leverage to gain control of academic decision-making at Harvard,” the lawsuit said.

Harvard University also alleged that the Trump administration’s actions were arbitrary in nature and violated the university’s First Amendment right to free speech.

White House Responds

In response, the White House spokesperson, Harrison Fields, said that the “gravy train of federal assistance” to institutions like Harvard was coming to an end. “Taxpayer funds are a privilege, and Harvard fails to meet the basic conditions required to access the privilege,” Fields added.

Since January, Trump has cracked down on top US universities on the grounds that they mishandled last year’s pro-Palestinian protests and allowed anti-semitic sentiments to foster within campus. However, protesters, including some Jewish groups, say that their criticism of Israel’s military actions in Gaza is wrongly being conflated with antisemitism.

CSR as ‘punishment’: NGT asks Jindal Steel Works to spend Rs 1.61 Crore on CSR projects

Spending money on CSR projects has come as a “punishment” for Jindal Steel Works (JSW) for alleged “procedural nature violations” at its Dolvi plant in Pen, Raigad district. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the steel manufacturing company to spend Rs 1,60,80,000 on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities as a punishment for environmental violations.

JSW has to spend the CSR amount within a year: NGT

The order, issued by the Western Bench of the NGT, has directed JSW to complete the CSR expenditure within one year. The company has been asked to submit detailed reports of the CSR activities undertaken to its Board of Directors. The CSR expenditure reports must also be published in the company’s Annual Report and updated on its website every six months until restoration measures are completed, as per the order.

Allegation against JSW Steel Works

In 2022, social activist Samita Patil and agriculturist Sunil Kothekar had filed a petition alleging large-scale environmental damage due to the unauthorized expansion of JSW’s steel plant, the construction of a coke oven facility, and conveyor belt infrastructure leading to its private jetty.

According to the complainants, these developments encroached on sensitive mangrove ecosystems near Dharamtar Creek, allegedly destroying 1.89 hectares of mangroves and disturbing natural water channels.

JSW denies allegations

JSW has denied the allegations of violating environmental norms. The company has stated that they had obtained all environmental and Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearances necessary for the projects.

JSW violated Coastal Regulation Zone norms: NGT

The NGT has alleged that certain constructions — particularly the conveyor belt — were carried out within 50 meters of the mangroves, violating CRZ norms. Coastal Regulation Zone or CRZ norms in India govern development activities along the coastline, with the primary goal of protecting ecologically sensitive areas and ensuring sustainable development.

Received clearances from Environment Ministry: JSW

JSW, in its defence, has claimed that it has received multiple clearances by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC). The company claims that no mangroves were present within 50 meters of their construction sites at the time of approval. JSW also argued that the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) and MoEF&CC had conducted inspections at regular intervals and had not found any violations until recently.

Regarding the damage to mangroves, the company, in its reply, has blamed the loss on waste dumped by nearby village panchayats around the conveyor gallery.

Top CSR Projects in Patna

Personal Loan EMI Calculator: A Tool to Streamline Your Finances

Managing loan repayments can be challenging if you don’t plan your finances properly.

Taking a Personal Loan comes with the responsibility of timely EMI payments, and a structured approach is necessary to avoid financial strain. This is where a Personal Loan EMI calculator becomes useful.

A Personal Loan EMI calculator is an online tool that helps borrowers estimate their monthly installments based on loan amount, tenure, and interest rate.

It simplifies financial planning, ensuring that borrowers take a loan they can comfortably repay without disrupting their budget.

This guide explains how a Personal Loan EMI calculator works, its benefits, and how it differs from a Personal Loan eligibility calculator.

How a Personal Loan EMI Calculator Works

A Personal Loan EMI calculator computes the monthly instalment based on three key factors:

  • Loan amount: The total amount borrowed from the lender.
  • Interest rate: The rate at which interest is charged on the loan.
  • Loan tenure: The repayment period chosen by the borrower.

The EMI is calculated using the formula:

EMI = [P x R x (1+R)^N] / [(1+R)^N – 1]

Where:

P = Principal loan amount

R = Monthly interest rate (Annual rate/12/100)

N = Loan tenure in months

For example, if you take a Personal Loan of ₹ 5 Lakh at an annual interest rate of 12% for five years, the EMI can be easily determined using the calculator instead of manual calculations.

Benefits of Using a Personal Loan EMI Calculator

1. Helps in Budgeting and Financial Planning

Knowing your EMI in advance helps in planning monthly expenses. It ensures that repayments do not impact essential financial commitments like rent, utility bills, or savings.

2. Provides Accurate EMI Estimations

Manual calculations can lead to errors. A Personal Loan EMI calculator ensures accuracy, giving the exact EMI amount within seconds.

3. Saves Time and Effort

Instead of manually applying formulas, borrowers can get instant results by entering basic loan details into the calculator.

4. Helps Compare Loan Offers

Different lenders offer varying interest rates and tenures. The calculator allows borrowers to compare different loan options to find the most suitable one.

5. Determines the Ideal Loan Tenure

Borrowers can adjust the tenure in the calculator to find a balance between affordable EMIs and total interest payable.

How to Use a Personal Loan EMI Calculator Effectively

Using a Personal Loan EMI calculator is simple and requires only three steps:

  1. Enter the Loan Amount: This is the total amount you wish to borrow.

  2. Select the Interest Rate: Use the interest rate provided by the lender.

  3. Choose the Loan Tenure: This is the repayment period in months or years.

Once these details are entered, the calculator instantly displays the EMI amount, total interest payable, and total repayment amount. Borrowers can tweak these values to see how changes in tenure or loan amount affect the EMI.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Using a Personal Loan EMI Calculator

1. Ignoring Additional Charges

Many borrowers focus only on the EMI and overlook other charges like processing fees, prepayment penalties, and GST. These can add to the total cost of the loan.

2. Choosing a Long Tenure for Lower EMIs

Opting for a longer tenure may reduce monthly payments, but it increases the total interest paid over time. Borrowers should strike a balance between affordability and total cost.

3. Not Checking Interest Rate

Checking the interest rate is essential when applying for a Personal Loan. It determines the total repayment amount and EMI amount to be paid every month. A higher interest rate can lead to a higher EMI amount which can be hard on your budget.

4. Overestimating Repayment Capacity

Borrowers should ensure that EMIs do not exceed 30-40% of their monthly income. Taking a high loan amount without proper assessment can lead to financial strain.

Alternatives to a Personal Loan EMI Calculator

While online EMI calculators are convenient, some alternatives include:

  • Bank EMI charts: Some banks provide pre-calculated EMI tables based on interest rates and tenures.

  • Excel formulas: Borrowers can use spreadsheet functions like PMT in Microsoft Excel to calculate EMIs.

  • Manual calculations: Although time-consuming, applying the EMI formula manually can help understand the process.

However, none of these methods match the speed and accuracy of an online Personal Loan EMI calculator.

Conclusion

A Personal Loan EMI calculator is an essential tool for anyone planning to take a Personal Loan. It helps estimate monthly payments, compare loan options, and ensure that borrowers choose the right tenure and amount.

Before applying for a loan, using a Personal Loan eligibility calculator can help determine the amount you qualify for, while the EMI calculator ensures that repayments remain affordable. By using these tools wisely, borrowers can manage their loans effectively without financial stress.
