The specially curated walk was held in Kozhikode, Kerala, and explored the rich history and cultural legacy of the Zamorin era.
The ‘My City My Heritage’ campaign promotes awareness of India’s heritage and culture, fostering conversations and partnerships to preserve both tangible and intangible heritage. It acts as a catalyst for the local citizens of these cities and towns to learn more about the rich history and culture that engulfs their surroundings. Similar walks have been held previously in Prayagraj, Bhubaneswar, Shillong, Nashik, and Hyderabad.
The walk, themed “Zamorin’s Trail: Exploring Kozhikode’s Glorious Heritage,” offered participants a unique opportunity to delve into the city’s vibrant past. It commenced in the morning from the Tali Shiva Temple and concluded at the 1980’s restaurant, passing through significant heritage landmarks, including Palayam, SM Street (Mittai Theruvu), Kuttichira’s historic mosques, Gujarati Street, the Big Bazaar Market, and more. The journey truly highlighted the city’s rich legacy of cosmopolitanism, religious harmony, governance, literature, and scholarship. Led by Sruthin Lal, a culture and heritage practitioner, the walk was attended by members of the local community, government officials, media, and senior leadership of IndiGo and InterGlobe Foundation.
Speaking on the occasion, Rohini Bhatia, Chairperson, InterGlobe Foundation, said, “We are thrilled to showcase the naturally beautiful and culturally rich city of Kozhikode through the ‘My City My Heritage’ campaign. Kozhikode’s enduring cultural significance, shaped by centuries of history and diverse influences, offers a fascinating glimpse into India’s rich heritage, and we are delighted to share this experience with the community.”
Speaking at the occasion, Pieter Elbers, Chief Executive Officer, IndiGo said, “Kozhikode, a prominent tourist destination, is distinguished by its rich cultural heritage. This sixth Heritage Walk underscores IndiGo’s commitment to celebrating and preserving the historical legacy of the Zamorin era. As India’s leading airline, we remain dedicated to promoting tourism and showcasing Kozhikode’s unique history, further solidifying our commitment to responsible corporate citizenship and community engagement by connecting people, places, and culture.”
InterGlobe Foundation, in partnership with Sahapedia, launched the ‘My City My Heritage’ project in 2019, dedicated to reviving and celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Indian cities. This initiative transcends traditional preservation efforts by actively engaging with local communities to explore, document, and share the diverse heritage assets that shape urban identities. After initially covering ten cities across India, the program has expanded to explore the rich heritage of Srinagar, Kozhikode, Lucknow, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (formerly Aurangabad), aiming to create an immersive experience for a diverse audience.
Both the InterGlobe Foundation and IndiGoReach have undertaken various projects to promote heritage conservation and preservation in India. Some of the major initiatives of InterGlobe Foundation include the conservation and cultural revival of Abdur Rahim Khan-I-Khanan’s mausoleum in Delhi, the cultural mapping and documentation of ten cities, restoration of ‘Indra Kund’ stepwell in Delwara, tile restoration of Qutb Shah’s Mausoleum, and Heritage Fellowships.

RG Kar junior doctor rape-murder case: Sanjay Roy sentenced to life imprisonment
Sanjay Roy, the culprit in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital trainee doctor rape and murder case has been sentenced to life imprisonment till death by a Kolkata court on Monday. He has also been fined Rs 50,000 by the Sealdah Civil and Criminal Court.
Sanjay Roy was found guilty by the Sessions Court under Sections 64 (rape), 66 (punishment for causing death), and 103(1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on Saturday.
The court also directed the Mamata Banerjee-led government to pay compensation of Rs 17 lakh to the victim’s family. However, the victim’s family has refused to accept any compensation.
Meanwhile, 33-year-old Sanjay Roy, a former civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police has been telling the court that he has not committed the crime as is being “framed”.

Not rarest of rare says court

The CBI, which was probing the case after taking it over from Kolkata Police in August last year, had made an appeal to the court demanding capital punishment for Sanjay Roy saying it comes under the “rarest of rare” category. However, Additional district and sessions judge of the Sealdah court, Anirban Das stated that the case “did not fall under the rarest of rare category” and sentenced Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment.

All the culprits should be punished: Protesting doctor

Colleagues of the deceased doctor were seen protesting outside the court premises in Kolkata on Monday. One of the protesters, who did not wish to be named, told the media, “We want all the culprits to be punished, not only Sanjay. This is because Sanjay is only one of the culprits; he is not the only culprit in this case. There is a larger conspiracy involved in this case, we want justice.”

RG Kar junior doctor rape-murder case

A 31-year-old trainee doctor was raped and murdered inside Kolkata’s R G Kar Medical College and Hospital on the 9th of August this year. Her semi-naked body was discovered from the hospital’s seminar room in the early hours of August 9.

The brutal crime triggered nationwide protests by doctors seeking enhanced security for medical professionals at workplace.

Actor Gul Panag and Boxer Saweety Boora Lead Nationwide ‘Fit India Sundays on Cycle’ for Road Safety

Actor Gul Panag and Boxer Saweety Boora Lead Nationwide ‘Fit India Sundays on Cycle’ for Road Safety
Delhi, India: Well-known actor Gul Panag and Arjuna awardee boxer Saweety Boora rallied behind the ‘Fit India Sundays on Cycle’ campaign saying “it is the only way to build a sporting and fitness culture” in the country as they led more than 500 cyclists at the Leisure Valley park in Gurugram.
Road safety was the theme for this week’s nationwide cycling event, which was launched by Union Sports Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya last month.
“I have been associated with the Fit India movement from the time it was launched many years ago. It is a fantastic initiative by the Sports Authority of India. I think Fit India movement is the only way we will build a sporting and a fitness culture which will lead India into winning more medals in competitive arenas. But we have to start with the fitness culture. That’s where Fit India makes an incredible contribution and Sundays on Cycle is a fabulous initiative. If not on other days we can take out time on Sundays for an easy ride,” Gul Panag said later.
“Road safety especially for cyclists is very important. Every year scores of cyclists get deeply injured and some fatally because of automobile drivers not being aware about the cyclists on the road. Cyclists must wear helmets and protective gear like knee guards and elbow guards. I would urge all motorists to be cognizant of cyclists on the streets and look out for them. Please ride safe,” she reminded about road safety.
World champion boxer in light heavyweight category, Saweety Boora, who completed the 20km ride meandering through Golf Course Road, AIT chowk, Arya Samaj Road and Millenium City Centre back to Leisure Valley park, gave the slogan: “Pollution ko punch aur drugs ko right hook kyuki Sundays hai cycling ke liye” (Out punch pollution and deliver a right hook to drugs because Sundays are for cycling).

She further added, “This is a great initiative by Fit India. I am very happy to cycle after a long time. Cycling has many benefits including keeping one’s knees in good condition, muscle strength and stamina also improves, which helps in better mobility. It also betters the health of your heart and lungs. Whether you are young or old, cycling is beneficial for overall fitness and remaining healthy.”
At Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports (NSNIS), Patiala, more than 80 riders braved cold conditions and heavy fog for the cycling event, completing 11km distance. The participants included administrative officers, sports scientists, support staff, coaches, diploma trainees and National Centres of Excellence (NCOE) athletes.
At Regional Centre Gandhinagar, 50 riders from India Post took part in the cycle rally, while 50 riders from the 15th Battalion of Bihar Regiment cycled in RC Kolkata.
NCOE Sonepat organised the event on the theme of Women Warriors at 10 locations including Khelo India Centres (KICs) and Khelo India Accredited Academies (KIAAs). Young hockey athletes along with sub junior world championship players Tamanna and Ravina participated in the event. ‘Fit India Sundays on Cycle’ was also conducted in the states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Meghalaya.
Previously, the cycling event witnessed participation of Indian Army jawans, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and prominent sports stars like Lovlina Borgohain, Sangram Singh, Shanky Singh, Nitu Ghanghas and Simran Sharma (para world champion), to name a few.The movement also promotes environment-friendly practices to decrease air pollution levels across the country.
The ‘Fit India Sundays on Cycle’ is organised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS), in collaboration with the Cycling Federation of India (CFI) and MY Bharat. Events are simultaneously held nationwide at SAI Regional Centres, National Centres of Excellence (NCOEs) and the Khelo India centres (KICs).

RPF has apprehended 586 Bangladeshis and 318 Rohingyas to prevent illegal migration since 2021: Railway Ministry

RPF has apprehended 586 Bangladeshis and 318 Rohingyas to prevent illegal migration since 2021: Railway Ministry
Delhi, India: Railway Protection Force (RPF) has successfully apprehended 916 individuals, including 586 Bangladeshi nationals and 318 Rohingya since 2021, showing their commitment to safeguard the nation. In June and July 2024, RPF apprehended 88 Bangladeshi and Rohingya migrants in areas under the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR). Some of these individuals confessed to entering India illegally and were intercepted while traveling by train to destinations such as Kolkata.
In October 2024, reports highlighted that despite increased security measures along the Bangladesh border, illegal migrants continue to infiltrate India, using Assam as a transit route and railways as their preferred mode of travel to reach other parts of the country. These incidents underscore the challenges faced by Indian authorities in monitoring and securing railway networks against illegal infiltration. The use of railways by infiltrators not only facilitates their movement across states but also complicates efforts to detect and prevent unauthorized entry into the country.
For considering the above issue, the RPF has intensified its efforts by collaborating with key security agencies such as the Border Security Force (BSF), local police, and intelligence units. This inter-agency approach has significantly enhanced operational efficiency, enabling swift identification and detention of individuals involved in illegal migration.
Despite its significant contributions, the RPF is not directly empowered to prosecute apprehended individuals. Instead, detained persons are handed over to police and other authorized agencies for further legal proceedings.
In the light of recent political turmoil going on in the neighboring countries such as Bangladesh and Myanmar and geopolitical developments and socio-religious factors in these regions have led to an influx of individuals seeking refuge, employment, and shelter deep within India’s hinterlands. It remains a significant concern for national security. While precise statistics on the number of infiltrators using railways are limited, recent reports indicate that illegal migrants often utilize railway networks to transit through regions like Assam and Tripura en route to other parts of India.
The Railway Protection Force has risen to the challenge of addressing this critical issue, playing a pivotal role in identifying and apprehending illegal migrants attempting to penetrate India’s borders. These individuals are not only a matter of national security concern but are also highly vulnerable to exploitation, including human trafficking for bonded labor, domestic help, prostitution, and even organ harvesting.

Adopt a Sport under CSR: Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports

Adopt a Sport under CSR: Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports
With the aim of strengthening the sports ecosystem of India in order to host the 2036 Olympic Games, Honourable Union Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya has urged corporates to adopt one sport during the first-ever corporate round-table conference in the National Capital.
Dr. Mandaviya emphasised a vision to position India among the top five global sports performers by 2047, as the nation marks 100 years of independence. The Minister highlighted the crucial role of Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) in bridging the gap between aspirations and execution. He stressed on the role of CSR in building sustainable sports infrastructure and talent development programs. The Minister also proposed that PSUs from the Centre support state-level requirements to achieve sporting excellence.

Adopt a Sport

“Each corporate entity should focus on a single sport to ensure dedicated attention and optimal resource allocation, while also enabling effective athlete branding to align with CSR investments and promotional activities,” Dr. Mandaviya said.
Apart from that, the Union Minister asked the corporates to contribute towards upgrading sports facilities in existing district-level schools in line with the District Level Sports Schools in Gujarat. He further spoke about developing Olympic Training Centres, sports academies, funding the training and coaching of Target Olympic Podium Scheme athletes and to be actively involved in the organisation of national leagues in disciplines where it is yet to be staged.
More than 40 corporate houses and organisations working in the sports ecosystem shared their knowledge and opinion in a first-ever Open House session with the Sports Minister.

What are Corporates Saying?

Speaking after the meeting, JSW Sports MD Parth Jindal said, “This is the first time that the honourable Sports Minister spent so much time with the corporate sector – almost three hours he spent. He wanted to understand our opinion, our view on how to take Indian sports forward. The government is already doing a lot of incredible work in sports and even the corporates are doing their bit but how to collaborate so that the athletes are happy and we can improve our medal tally at the 2036 Olympics.”
ICICI Bank Non-Executive Chairman PK Sinha especially liked the concept of development of sports infrastructure in rural areas and opined, “Development of sports in rural areas is the need of the hour. It is heartening to see that the Indian government and our honourable Sports Minister is fully committed to improve the sports infrastructure in distant villages. A lot of raw talent resides in more than 6 lakh Indian villages. They need to be nurtured and motivated to play sports. ICICI Bank will be very pleased to have a further dialogue with officials to do what best we can for rural sports.”
Dalmia Cement Bharat MD Puneet Dalmia also expressed his company’s interest in developing District Level Sports Schools, one of the key infrastructure development plans of the CSR partnership. “Being a father, I personally believe that engaging a young generation to play sports is of utmost importance with the kids spending almost 7-8 hours on mobile phones and tablets. If we want to produce a healthier and fitter generation, we have to penetrate into Tier 2/3 cities and towns, where sports is still not a priority. The Dalmia Group is present in 14 states and 27 cities and we would like to develop sports infrastructure at the district level,” Mr Dalmia said.
The corporates can also become thematic partners for Khelo India mission, indigenous sports, para sports and sports for women programmes apart from the establishment of sports science centres and performance testing labs.
