Strong Performance of Agro Sector and Gradual Improvement of Domestic Consumption: RBI Report

RBI
According to a recent study released by the Reserve Bank of India, the Indian economy is continuing to demonstrate resilience as evident in the strong performance of the agriculture sector and the gradually improving domestic consumption. The report is released amid rising trade tension and tariff issues posed by the Trump administration globally.
The report said, “Domestically, macroeconomic fundamentals remain strong, and economic growth is poised to sustain momentum driven by robust domestic demand, steady investment activity, and ongoing policy-driven infrastructure development along with a pick-up in government spending.

Financial Year 2025

The RBI report stated that the global economy entered 2025 on a strong note of resilience and is currently caught in a storm of escalating tensions and heightened uncertainty around the scope, timing and intensity of tariffs.
However, robust kharif production between rabi sowing along with higher reservoir levels and seasonal winter correction in vegetable prices have kept food inflation under control. But volatility in commodity prices and weather anomalies still remain potential risks to the overall inflation landscape, according to the RBI report.

Air Indian and Air New Zealand Sign MoU for Direct Flight Connectivity

India-New Zealand
India and New Zealand could see direct air connectivity in the coming three years. Air India and Air New Zealand are exploring opportunities for a direct flight service by the end of 2028 as part of the agreement between the two airlines to boost connectivity between the two countries.

India-New Zealand Ties

Air India and Air New Zealand have come up with a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that establishes a new code-sharing partnership along with exploring direct flight services between the two nations. Both airlines are members of Star Alliance and have seen significant demand potential for travel between India and New Zealand for tourism, trade and education. Currently, New Zealand also has a sizeable Indian population. People of Indian origin form the third largest ethnic group in the country.
At present, there is no direct flight between India and New Zealand and travellers have to transit via other airports in South East Asia and Australia. This increases the total travel duration to around 17 hours or more.
“The MoU includes the establishment of a new code-sharing partnership on 16 rounds between India, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand, conferring travellers more choice and convenient access between the two countries.” said the two airlines in a joint release after signing the MoU in Mumbai.

Stress Buster

Sleep tourism

Her Story: A Northeastern Lawyer Who Fights Against Racism in India

Racism
This is the tale of an inspiring Indian humanitarian, activist and lawyer from Manipur, Dr Alana Golmei.
Born in Tamenglong, Manipur in a Naga family, Golmei has worked in preventing harassment and abuse of women and tribal individuals from the Northeast.
Often, north Indian cities like the capital city Delhi, are not the best host to people from the Northeast, who often suffer visible and invisible forms of racial discrimination. While the students are called racist names like ‘Momo’ or ‘Chinky’, women from the Northeast employed in hospitality and direct customer services often face sexual harassment in a metropolitan miles away from their home. Unable to communicate in the local language and in the absence of any support, tribals from the Northeast often find themselves stuck.
Alana’s goal has been to assist people from north east, both of tribal and non-tribal backgrounds, to fight racial discrimination across India. Golmei was also part of the 2014 Bezburruah committee, which famously suggested measures to deal with racial discrimination targeted at north-eastern Indians. The committee was formed after the alleged death of a student from the Northeast after facing racial discrimination in Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar market.

Indian Student Arrested in US Faces Deportation Over Alleged Hamas Ties

An Indian postdoctoral fellow at Georgetown University in Washington DC has been detained by US authorities and faces deportation over allegations of spreading Hamas propaganda and antisemitism. Badar Khan Suri, arrested on Monday night outside his home in Virginia, is the latest in a series of incidents involving Indian students in the United States.
The Trump administration invoked a rarely-used section of immigration law to detain Suri, citing him as a threat to US foreign policy. Secretary of State Marco Rubio determined that Suri’s activities “rendered him deportable”, according to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Accusations and Arrest

Federal agents arrested Suri after informing him that his visa was being revoked. The DHS accused Suri of having ties to the Palestinian militant group Hamas and spreading Hamas propaganda and antisemitism on social media. However, the statement shared with Fox News did not provide specific evidence to support these claims.
Suri, who is married to an American citizen, is currently detained in Alexandria, Louisiana, awaiting a court date in immigration court. His lawyer argues that Suri has no criminal record and is being targeted because of his wife’s Palestinian origins.
The arrest comes just over a week after another Indian student, Ranjani Srinivasan, self-deported using the CBP Home App after escaping detention on similar accusations of antisemitism.

Broader Implications and Concerns

This incident is part of a larger trend of the Trump administration targeting pro-Palestinian protesters for deportation, particularly following Hamas’s attack on Israel in October 2023. Civil rights and immigrant advocacy groups have criticised these actions, arguing that the administration is unfairly targeting dissenting voices.
The use of this rarely-invoked immigration law provision has raised concerns about academic freedom and the rights of international students in the United States. The same provision was previously used to deport Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University student and green card holder, who had allegedly led pro-Palestinian demonstrations last year.
Georgetown University, where Suri was teaching “Majoritarianism and Minority Rights in South Asia”, appears to have been unaware of his alleged illegal activities. Suri’s academic background includes a PhD in peace and conflict studies from India.
The case has sparked debate about the balance between national security concerns and academic freedom. Suri’s lawyer argued, “If an accomplished scholar who focusses on conflict resolution is whom the government decides is bad for foreign policy, then perhaps the problem is with the government, not the scholar”.
As the situation unfolds, it highlights the complex interplay between international politics, immigration policies, and academic pursuits in the United States. The outcome of Suri’s case could have significant implications for other international students and researchers, particularly those engaged in politically sensitive areas of study.
The incident also underscores the importance of understanding and adhering to visa regulations and social media guidelines for international students in the US. As tensions continue to simmer in various global hotspots, students and academics from abroad may find themselves under increased scrutiny, necessitating a careful balance between academic expression and compliance with host country regulations.

J&K Government Formulate New Media Policy

Media Policy
The Jammu and Kashmir government is formulating a new media policy to include emerging platforms under the ambit of the law. The scope of this policy will expand from social media platforms to multimedia news websites.
Responding to a cut motion by Pulwama MLA Waheed-ur-Rehman Parra, the J&K government defended the policy and said that it is a means to align with the evolving media and broadcasting landscape of the state. The policy also seeks to adhere to the standards set by the Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity (DAVP), Government of India.

New Media Policy 2020

Five years ago, the New Media Policy 2020 of Kashmir met criticism from the media and no support from the opposition political parties. The 2025 policy is another attempt at regulating media and entertainment inside a troubled territory of the country.
“(Srinagar Press Club) was operating from a building provided by the Estates department… Due to a dispute, the building is now temporarily occupied by J&K police.”  states the government of J&K while addressing media concerns about the journalist club of the state.

Congress Holds Strategic Meeting in Delhi: Bengal Leadership Advocates Going Solo in 2026 Elections

New Delhi, India: With the general elections a year away, the Congress leadership convened a crucial meeting in Delhi to discuss the party’s strategy, particularly in West Bengal. The meeting, led by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, senior leader Rahul Gandhi, and K C Venugopal, saw intense deliberations on the party’s organisational strength and future course of action.
As the political landscape in West Bengal remains volatile, Congress leaders focused on the party’s own prospects, with most provincial representatives advocating for an independent electoral battle rather than aligning with other parties. Despite their strong appeals, the high command refrained from making any definitive commitments and instead urged leaders to concentrate on grassroots mobilisation and strengthening party structures.

Strategic Review and Organisational Challenges

Kharge and Rahul Gandhi have been holding regular meetings with provincial leadership across states to assess the organisational landscape. In Wednesday’s discussions, it was evident that Congress intends to closely monitor states where the party remains weak.
During the meeting, Bengal Congress representatives detailed the organisational hurdles they face, with a particular focus on the party’s challenges in countering both the BJP’s rising Hindutva narrative and the ruling Trinamool Congress’ response to it. Sources revealed that Rahul Gandhi took a keen interest in the unfolding political scenario in Bengal, discussing the fallout of the tragic rape and murder case at RG Kar Hospital, which has fuelled tensions in the state.
Additionally, Bengal leaders voiced concerns about the impact of Sheikh Hasina’s government’s fall in Bangladesh, highlighting how the BJP has intensified its hardline Hindutva approach in response. In turn, the Trinamool Congress has adopted its own tactics to counter this political shift.

Congress’ Position on Alliances

Rahul Gandhi addressed apprehensions about Congress MPs often being seen alongside Trinamool MPs in parliamentary sessions. He clarified that cooperation in Parliament should not be equated with state-level alliances, reiterating that Congress has often suffered setbacks due to regional parties, including Trinamool, in past elections. As a result, he urged the Bengal leadership to prioritise organisational growth over concerns about alliances.
For the past two years, Congress’ focus on Bengal has been limited due to elections in other states. However, the provincial leadership was assured that the central leadership would now engage more actively in Bengal politics. Senior AICC figures are expected to visit the state frequently to oversee the party’s development.

Factional Tensions Surface

The meeting also brought to light internal divisions within the Bengal Congress. While former state president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury was present, his close associates were conspicuously absent, raising questions about factionalism within the party. On the other hand, current provincial president Subhankar Sarkar attended the meeting along with several key figures, including Amitabh Chakraborty, Santosh Pathak, Suman Roychowdhury, and Pooja Roychowdhury.
As the 2026 elections approach, Congress’ strategy in Bengal remains uncertain. However, the emphasis on strengthening the party’s grassroots presence signals a renewed focus on building independent political momentum rather than relying on alliances. The coming months will determine whether this approach translates into electoral gains or further challenges for the party in the state.

Media outlets have extensively reported on the ongoing divorce between cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal and his spouse Dhanashree Verma. The pair tied the knot during December 2020 however they have been living separately since mid-2022. The reports showed that Yuzvendra Chahal agreed to pay Rs 4.5 crore in permanent alimony yet he has only given Rs 2.37 crore to Dhanashree. The cooling-off plea was denied by the Bombay High Court after Chahal failed to pay his pending divorce settlement as stipulated. Before Chahal begins his IPL games the Bombay High Court demanded the family court to finish their divorce case by March 20, 2025.

RJ Mahvesh’s Post Fuels Relationship Speculations with Chahal

Amid these developments, RJ Mahvash, who is rumored to be dating Chahal, sparked further speculation with a cryptic Instagram post. On Wednesday, Mahvash shared a series of photos featuring herself dressed in a white t-shirt with red heart motifs, paired with a sheer shrug. The caption read, “Jhut, lalach, aur fareb se parey hain..khuda ka shukr ainey aaj bhi khade hain…” (Far from lies, greed, and deceit… Thank God, we are still standing today, looking in the mirror). Given the timing of the post, many on social media speculated that Mahvash’s words were a veiled reference to the ongoing divorce drama between Chahal and Verma.
The post received widespread attention from followers when Chahal instantly showed his appreciation for it by liking the post. People in the comment section made light of the situation by assuming Chahal had enabled automatic likes on his platform. The combination of Mahvash’s recent Instagram post with her friendship with Chahal caused rumours about their love relationship to intensify since they have been speculated to be dating for many months.

RJ Mahvesh Denies Dating Chahal

The speculation about Mahvash and Chahal’s relationship continues to spread among netizens even though she has avoided speaking about it. Mahvash recently made statements regarding her relationship status after rumors surrounding her and Chahal surfaced in January this year. She dismissed the rumour by emphasising that spending time with someone from the opposite sex does not automatically indicate you are in a romantic partnership.
Chahal and Verma submitted their divorce petition to the court based on section 13B of the Hindu Marriage Act while asking for a consent-based divorce without waiting for the required time period. Public attention remains intensively focused on cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal’s impending IPL start while waiting for his divorce settlement to conclude before the season begins. Meanwhile, Mahvash maintains ongoing social media activity that captivates and engages her fanbase regardless of other developments.
