AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi has formally requested the Chief Minister of Telangana, Revanth Reddy, to consider naming the upcoming Mamnoor Airport after Moulvi Syed Alauddin. This proposal is aimed at honouring Alauddin, a historical figure known for his role as a freedom fighter and for his service as the Imam of Makkah Masjid in Hyderabad. Owaisi’s letter comes following a recent appeal from the state government, inviting public suggestions for an appropriate name for the airport.

The initiative to name the airport is part of a broader effort to include the community in decision-making processes regarding significant local landmarks. Owaisi’s correspondence emphasises the need to acknowledge the contributions of notable figures from the region’s history, particularly those who played a role in resisting British colonial rule.

Historical Significance of Moulvi Syed Alauddin

Moulvi Syed Alauddin is celebrated for his significant involvement in India’s First War of Independence in 1857. Owaisi’s letter highlights Alauddin’s leadership alongside Turrebaz Khan, who led a notable resistance against British control in Hyderabad on July 17, 1857. Following the uprising, Alauddin faced imprisonment at the Cellular Jail, an experience that underscores his commitment to the freedom struggle in South India.

Owaisi insists that recognising Alauddin’s contributions by naming the airport after him would provide an enduring tribute to his sacrifices. He calls attention to the importance of remembering freedom fighters who have historically been overlooked, thereby promoting their legacies for future generations. The request aims to elevate the status of unsung heroes within the context of India’s struggle for independence.

In his correspondence, Owaisi reiterates the cultural and historical importance of Mamnoor Airport itself. Established in the 1930s during the Nizam’s rule, it is one of the oldest airports in India, originally designed to support local industries, particularly the paper manufacturing sector and establishments such as Azam Jahi Mills in Warangal district.
