AAP Leaders Announce One-Day Hunger Strike In Protest Against CEC Gyanesh Kumar

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has decided to observe a one-day hunger strike to protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, as confirmed in a recent meeting held at the party’s headquarters. This symbolic action is part of the ongoing agitation in New Delhi, where AAP leaders and workers are mobilising their efforts to demand Kumar’s resignation.

During the meeting, attended by all Delhi MLAs, councillors, and district-level office-bearers, key party figures such as Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh and Delhi unit president Saurabh Bharadwaj highlighted the need for a robust strategy to confront the authorities. The focus was primarily on how to escalate protest activities while maintaining a peaceful approach.

Details of the Hunger Strike

The hunger strike is scheduled for October 15, with participants expected to gather at the AAP headquarters. Gopal Rai, a prominent party leader, mentioned that the aim of the protest is to continue the Gandhian tradition of peaceful resistance. He stated that this hunger strike is a significant addition to their ongoing agitation against perceived injustices by the Election Commission and the central government.

Rai expressed that the meeting’s agenda was centred on formulating a strategy to intensify their protests in the lead-up to the hunger strike. He noted that the AAP has been consistent in its peaceful demonstrations, which have been aimed at drawing attention to their demands. The administration of the party believes that the hunger strike will serve as a crucial tool in their protest against the Chief Election Commissioner.

Participants in the upcoming hunger strike will include various AAP leaders and volunteers from across Delhi, thereby showcasing a united front against the challenges they claim to face from the Election Commission. The collective action is meant to amplify their calls for change within the electoral system.

Recent Clashes With the Police

Following the meeting, AAP leaders and workers attempted a march towards Jantar Mantar but encountered resistance from police personnel who obstructed their path near Janpath. This confrontation reportedly led to clashes between the authorities and AAP members, raising tensions on the ground.

Several leaders, including MP Sanjay Singh and party unit president Saurabh Bharadwaj, along with a number of MLAs and councillors, were detained during the unrest. The detentions were part of the police’s efforts to manage the situation, which escalated as AAP workers sought to press forward with their demonstration. The detained leaders were released later in the evening, but the incident has added to the ongoing friction between the AAP and law enforcement agencies.

In light of these developments, AAP leaders have reiterated their commitment to peaceful protest despite the confrontations. They aim to ensure that their voice is heard while remaining within the framework of non-violent resistance, in keeping with their stated principles and traditions.
