174 Years Old Bhujiya Kotho to Reopen for Tourists on March 19 After Restoration

The CSR Journal Magazine

The iconic Bhujiya Kotho, a landmark with a history of 174 years, is set to welcome tourists starting March 19, 2026. Once recognized as the tallest structure in the Saurashtra region, this building plays a significant role in the area’s heritage.

Government Initiatives for Preservation

Efforts to restore and enhance the historical and cultural significance of this site have been led by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. The restoration initiative follows damage sustained during the 2001 earthquake, prompting the Jamnagar Municipal Corporation to undertake a comprehensive project. The costs for the restoration work amounted to Rs 25 crores, funded under the Swarnim Jayanti Mukhyamantri Urban Development Scheme.

Collaboration with Archaeological Experts

The restoration efforts aimed to revive the historical essence of Bhujia Kotha were carried out in collaboration with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Significant milestones were achieved, with Phase-1 of the project inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 20, 2025.

Architectural Significance and Restoration Techniques

Bhujiya Kotha was constructed between 1839 and 1852, originally serving purposes related to security and communication. The building suffered damage from the 2001 earthquake, necessitating restoration. The revival involved meticulous craftsmanship, utilizing traditional techniques to restore architectural features such as the windows, arches, and conservatories. Natural materials including lime, guggle, multani mitti, gokhru, areetha, and vermilion were employed to achieve historical authenticity.

Future Heritage Initiatives

In addition to the restoration of Bhujiya Kotha, plans for Phase 2 include connecting the Lakhota Museum, located between Khambhaliya Gate and Ranmal Lake, via a heritage trail. This initiative aims to create a cohesive access point for various historical sites in the region. Current efforts are underway to facilitate this connection, enhancing the cultural landscape of Jamnagar.
