UIDAI Launches Smart Aadhaar App for 140 Crore Indians

The CSR Journal Magazine

India’s Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched a new Aadhaar app that aims to make managing and sharing Aadhaar identity documents simpler, safer and entirely digital for the nation’s 140 crore residents. This innovative app is designed to give citizens better control over their personal identity information while making verification processes quick, secure and paperless.

Making Aadhaar Digital for All

The new app from UIDAI is available on both Android and iOS platforms and introduces several modern features like face authentication and QR code-based verifications. Users can digitally store their Aadhaar card on their smartphones, eliminating the need to carry physical copies of the card. This step is a major push towards India’s vision of a digital identity ecosystem where identity proofs are easily accessible and reliable.

One of the significant advantages of the app is its emphasis on privacy and control. Users can choose to share only selective parts of their Aadhaar data. For example, if a person needs to prove their identity but not their address, they can share only their name and photo without disclosing more sensitive details. This selective sharing ensures greater privacy and security for users in day-to-day transactions.

Advanced Security Features

Security has been a prime focus in designing the new Aadhaar app. Besides traditional OTP-based authentication, the app introduces biometric lock features that enable users to lock or unlock their biometric data such as fingerprints and facial scans. This control prevents unauthorised use of sensitive biometric information.

Moreover, the app keeps a detailed log of when and where the Aadhaar data was used for authentication. This feature adds an extra layer of transparency and allows users to track potential misuse. Face authentication ensures that the person using the Aadhaar details is indeed the rightful owner, enhancing security and preventing fraud.

Easy Setup and Family Management

Setting up the new Aadhaar app is a straightforward process. After downloading the app from Google Play Store or Apple App Store, users will enter their 12-digit Aadhaar number. Verification is done through an OTP sent to the mobile number already linked with the Aadhaar account. The user must then complete the face authentication process and set a security PIN to protect the app.

The app also offers the convenience of storing Aadhaar cards of all family members in one place. This family management feature makes it easier for users to access and share Aadhaar details of their dependents without carrying physical copies for each family member.

UIDAI has announced that this app launch is part of broader reforms to modernise Aadhaar services. From November 1, 2025, residents will be able to update demographic details online. Additionally, a separate app, the e-Aadhaar app, is expected by December 2025 to facilitate home-based updates to Aadhaar information, providing even more flexibility and ease for users.

The new Aadhaar app marks a transformative step in India’s digital identity journey. With greater privacy controls, robust security features and simple accessibility, it empowers Indians to safely manage their most critical identity document in the digital space.
