Suvendu Adhikari Submits Nomination for Bhabanipur Seat Against Mamata Banerjee

The CSR Journal Magazine

Suvendu Adhikari has officially submitted his nomination for the Bhabanipur Assembly constituency in West Bengal as the candidate for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This filing took place on April 2, 2026, with notable political figures accompanying him, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP West Bengal President Samik Bhattacharya.

Adhikari is competing in the upcoming two-phase assembly elections for the seats in Bhabanipur and Nandigram. This election marks a significant contest, as he faces Trinamool Congress Chief and current West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur. Adhikari successfully won in Nandigram during the last elections, while Banerjee previously secured the Bhabanipur by-election against Priyanka Tibrewal.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah conducted a substantial roadshow in the Bhabanipur Assembly constituency earlier on the same day, aiming to galvanise voter support for the BJP. The event attracted a substantial turnout of party workers and supporters, indicating a strong focus on this pivotal constituency.

Issues Highlighted by Amit Shah

During the nomination event for Adhikari, Shah addressed several critical issues that he claimed were plaguing the state. According to Shah, problems such as corruption, extortion, youth unemployment, and illegal infiltration were of particular concern. He asserted that the people of Bengal are facing distress due to the actions of Trinamool Congress workers, a lack of security for women, and rising tensions linked to demographics in the region.

Shah emphasised the need for a significant political shift, stating that the entire populace of Bengal desires change. He advocated for the establishment of a BJP government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, asserting that securing the state’s borders and addressing issues of infiltration must be priorities.

Additionally, Shah unveiled the party’s vision for West Bengal, aimed at creating a prosperous future. He expressed a desire to realise the aspirations of celebrated cultural figures such as Swami Vivekananda, Rabindranath Tagore, and Syama Prasad Mukherjee, reinforcing the need for a transformative change in the state.

West Bengal Elections Schedule

The legislative assembly elections in West Bengal are set to be conducted in two phases, with polling dates on April 23 and April 29, 2026. The counting of votes will take place on May 4. These elections are pivotal as they represent the renewed contest for the 294-member assembly in a state that has seen significant political changes in recent years.

In the previous assembly elections held in 2021, the Trinamool Congress achieved a considerable victory, securing 213 seats amidst a vigorous competition with the BJP, which increased its presence to 77 seats. Both the Congress and the Left Front did not win any seats during that election cycle.

As the elections approach, the strategies and public sentiments in the state remain a point of interest for political analysts and the general populace, with the outcome poised to influence the political landscape in West Bengal significantly.
