The Supreme Court has raised serious questions regarding the handling of the custodial death of 25-year-old Gade Sai Krishna in Vijayawada. Concerns were expressed over the delayed registration of the FIR, the untraceable body, and missing CCTV footage from the police station.

The court indicated that it may direct a CBI investigation if the Andhra Pradesh High Court does not take appropriate actions.  A three-judge bench has currently put a hold on related proceedings at the High Court and requested case documentation in a sealed cover. The Central Bureau of Investigation has been included as a respondent in these proceedings.

Moreover, notices are being served to key officials including the state Director General of Police, the Vijayawada Police Commissioner, and an Assistant Commissioner of Police. The Supreme Court’s scrutiny appears to stem from concerns around the integrity of the ongoing investigation.

Court’s Supervision of Ongoing Investigations

The Supreme Court has instructed that all relevant records be submitted from the Andhra Pradesh High Court in a sealed cover and has prohibited any further proceedings on related matters until its review is complete. This oversight comes in light of earlier hearings where procedural failings were acknowledged by the Andhra Pradesh government, indicating lapses in addressing the case effectively.

During the ongoing session in the Supreme Court, the absence of concrete actions against senior police officials has been a focal point, with doubts being raised about the investigation’s thoroughness. The upcoming hearings scheduled for October aim to shed more light on the case while keeping the public informed on its progress.

Political Fallout in Andhra Pradesh

The developments in this case have reignited a political crisis within the state, with the YSR Congress Party leading a campaign against the Andhra Pradesh government, led by former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. Jagan has termed the SC’s intervention a significant setback for the current administration and has called for accountability among high-ranking police officials who oversee operations at the involved police stations.

Jagan’s statements underscore the perceived need for a CBI inquiry, asserting that a transparent investigation independent of state police is crucial for establishing accountability. His concerns extend to why responsibility should be borne solely by lower officers when senior officials are also implicated in the processes leading to Sai Krishna’s death.

As the Supreme Court continues its review, political tensions are expected to rise, with the YSR Congress Party using the court’s findings to amplify their critiques against the administration.
