Sunil Gavaskar slams Pakistan’s ‘selective’ boycott of India in T20 World Cup 2026

The CSR Journal Magazine

The International Cricket Council (ICC) and the global cricketing community have been thrown into a state of uncertainty following the Pakistan government’s decision to boycott its high-octane T20 World Cup match against India. While Islamabad has cleared the national side to participate in the remainder of the 2026 tournament, the refusal to take the field for the February 15 clash in Colombo has drawn sharp criticism from legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar.

Speaking on the development, Gavaskar urged the ICC to take stern action to prevent teams from making eleventh-hour withdrawals. The former India captain suggested that the apex body must ensure a precedent is set so that no other nation considers such a move in the future. Gavaskar also noted that the ICC might explore legal avenues, as the “selective participation” model threatens the commercial and competitive integrity of the world event.

The Bangladesh Fallout and Pakistan’s Protest

The roots of the current stand-off lie in the ICC’s recent decision regarding Bangladesh. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had requested that their T20 World Cup matches be moved out of India, citing security concerns following the exit of Mustafizur Rahman from the Indian Premier League. Pakistan was the only nation to support this request during the ICC Board meeting.

However, the ICC rejected the proposal after an independent assessment found no credible threat, subsequently replacing Bangladesh with Scotland in the tournament. In an apparent show of solidarity with Bangladesh, the Pakistan government announced on Sunday that while its team would compete in the World Cup, it would not play against the Suryakumar Yadav-led Indian side. The announcement coincided with the India U19 team defeating Pakistan U19 by 58 runs in the Super Six stage of the junior World Cup in Bulawayo.

Gavaskar Predicts Potential U-turn From Islamabad

Despite the firm tone of the Pakistan government’s social media announcement, Gavaskar expressed scepticism regarding the finality of the decision. Drawing a parallel with the tendency of Pakistani cricketers to frequently reverse their retirement decisions, he suggested that public and international pressure could force a similar “U-turn” before the scheduled match date.

The ICC has already issued a formal statement expressing “serious concern,” noting that selective participation is difficult to reconcile with the fundamental premise of a global sporting event. If Pakistan maintains its stance, India will be required to follow all match-day protocols in Colombo, including the toss. Should the Pakistan team fail to appear, the match referee will officially award a walkover to India, granting them two points in Group A, which also features Namibia, the USA, and the Netherlands.

Financial and Disciplinary Implications for PCB

The commercial ramifications of a forfeited India-Pakistan fixture are immense. Broadcasters and stakeholders reportedly stand to lose between ₹200 crore and ₹250 crore in advertising revenue if the marquee game is cancelled. Analysts suggest that the ICC could impose heavy financial penalties on the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) or even withhold their annual revenue share to compensate for these losses.

Beyond financial hits, the ICC may consider punitive sanctions ranging from docking points in other formats to restricting the participation of international stars in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). With the tournament set to begin on February 7, the cricketing world is watching closely to see if diplomacy or disciplinary warnings will prevail over the current political deadlock.
